Quotes
[About the 'Mafia Capitale' trial] Don't worry, the 'thing' here will end in failure anyway.
Quoted in Lirio Abbate, Massimo Carminati: "Tornerò da re a Roma", Espresso.Repubblica.it, 26 September 2016.
When I was 16, I used to walk around with a gun. Then, when all my friends were killed, I became an expert in what they [the prosecutors from the Rome public prosecutor's office] say and accuse me of, but they don't realise that I could piss on their heads if I wanted to.

As usual, L'Espresso has honoured me with its attention. It says 'Blackmail against the Italian Republic' [...] The same argument was put forward in this trial by Major Rosario Di Gangi of the Carabinieri's ROS unit. A senior figure in the unit that conducted this investigation. [...] Obviously, if Carminati bribes judges and manipulates trials, and if, one day, the outcome of this trial were not to L'Espresso's liking, I would probably also have bribed the judges in this trial. Your Honour, I would like to defend myself only on the matters that are part of the trial, but unfortunately I cannot do that [...] The things that are happening outside this trial are just as important as the things that are happening within it. [...] It has been clear since 2002 where my financial resources come from. If there were all these doubts about my involvement in the Piazzale Clodio vault robbery, they could have said so straight away and acquitted me instead of convicting me. There were a lot of documents in that vault, but also a lot of money, and I took some of it.
Only the Carabinieri are pretending not to understand where my financial resources come from; it's obvious.
Quoted in Floriana Bulfon, Massimo Carminati rompe il silenzio, Espresso.Repubblica.it, 15 March 2017.
[On his nickname 'Samurai' and the katana found in his home] It's ridiculous. If only I were the Samurai from the book Suburra. Which Netflix is now even making a series about. The katana they gave me, and which they seized. when they arrested me, was given to me as a joke after the book came out. It wasn't a real samurai sword. It was used for filleting tuna.
Quoted in Carlo Bonini, Le tre vite di Massimo Carminati, Repubblica.it, 21 July 2017.
Quotes about
He was cold, polished. The coldest and most polished of us all. And he was the one with the greatest power of attraction. With each acquittal, Carminati's power grew. He was fortunate enough to enjoy protection from above and to be charged with the murder of the journalist Mino Pecorelli , along with Giulio Andreotti.
Maurizio Abbatino, from an interview released to Il Fatto Quotidiano, reported in "Carminati ci vuole morti ma noi potremmo aiutare i servizi contro l'Isis", Ilgiornale.it, 23 December 2015.
How could it have happened that Massimo Carminati, the main defendant in the 'Mafia Capitale' trial, finds himself in the Parma super-prison, spending his social time with a mafia boss directly linked to the fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro?
Claudio Fava, quoted in In carcere Carminati e il boss di Cosa nostra. Fava: "Come è potuto accadere?", L'Espresso, 26 September 2016.
