Quotes
(At the Italian Chamber of Deputies, on the day of the kidnapping of Aldo Moro) What has happened represents the most serious attack to the State.
Quoted in Maurizio Caprara, La mattina in aula senza Moro, Corriere della Sera, 17 March 2018, p. 21.
Interviews
From a TV interview by Sergio Zavoli, La notte della Repubblica, registered in 1989 and then aired on Rai 2, 7 March 1990
[I remember] A sense of dismay, the disbelief at what had happened. I ran straight to Piazza del Gesù. I saw the streets full of police vans. It really seemed impossible, unbelievable… and I was overcome by a sense of dismay.
I remember that from that point on [9 May 1978], there was just one day: day and night.
In other words, it was a whole journey...deeply...deeply painful and deeply... filled with anxiety and... and with constant questions, because even today, I still wonder whether I did everything that could legitimately have been done to save Moro's life.
My pain had intensified, because the hope I had always held—that Moro could be returned, could be given back to his family first and foremost, and also to his party—had been dashed. And then it changed...[everything] changed, in the sense that, while Moro was still alive, I still had this certainty of his presence, no matter what, in the way he would have chosen, in line with his approach … in line with his [ideology]...so there was this void.
Interviewer: Did you ever meet Mrs Moro afterwards? Zaccagnini: I tried to meet her, but I wasn't...I wasn't able to.
Interviewer: What would you have said to Mrs Moro? Zaccagnini: I think I would have told her… if I had made a mistake, to understand me, to accept my apology, and to forgive me – that's all.
Quotes about
We were all in favour of sending him to the Quirinal Palace, to the post that would later go to Pertini.*
[...] He wouldn't hear of it.
Giulio Andreotti, quoted in Paolo Guzzanti, Tutti i segretari della mia vita Andreotti racconta 45 anni con i leader dc, La Stampa, 14 October 1982.
Poor Zaccagnini. He had a great charm: I remember him as the president of FUCI in Ravenna. He was someone who, when he stepped up onto the podium, made people listen to him, no matter what he was saying.
