thumb Jarena Lee (11 February 1783 – 3 February 1864) was the first woman preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). In 1836, Lee became the first African American woman to publish her autobiography. Quotes “If the man may preach, because the Savior died for him, why not the woman, seeing he died for her also? Is he not a whole Savior, instead of a half one, as those who hold it wrong for a woman to preach, would seem to make it appear?” Jarena Lee, The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee (1836), p.11 External links Jarena Lee - Voices from the Gaps Portrait of Jarena Lee Women in the American Story - Jarena Lee Category:1783 births Category:1864 deaths Category:Methodists from the United States Category:Women authors from the United States Category:People from New Jersey
