Candice Breitz (born 1972) is a South African white Jewish artist who works primarily in video and photography. She won a 2007 Prince Pierre de Monaco Prize. Her work is often characterized by multi-channel moving image installations, with a focus on the "attention economy" of contemporary media and culture, often represented in the parallelism of the identification with fictional characters and celebrity figures and widespread indifference to global issues. In 2017, she was selected to represent South Africa at the 57th Venice Biennale. Quotes Certain situations in life push you toward extreme decisions. Russeth, Andrew (12 May 2017). It was definitely one of the more nerve-wracking opportunities because it is a challenging space. It was also privilege to work with such a generous team at the Hainaut province institution, a beacon for contemporary, radical and accessible art. It’s completely different to be educated by a community of people who are living these lives. The evil genius of the apartheid government was to ensure that black South Africans remained barely educated, so older women have less access to complex discourse and the younger ones are knife shape who understand their work politically. Would not choose to do sex work if they had better paths through life. South African artist Candice Breitz questions white privilege in solo show ‘Off Voices’ at Charleroi,The Bulletin, (7 February 2025) Quotes About Her While appearing to subscribe to minimalist strategies, Breitz on the other hand owes much to pop. Her work brings the sparse conceptual idiom of the former to bear on the colourful realm of the latter. From the perspective of art history, her method appears as a unique, if not cacophonous, marriage of Sol LeWitt’s formulaic wall-drawings to Warhol’s production line of silk-screened Marilyn Monroes, freshly cooing out of the Factory. A recycler at heart, Breitz scavenges the overwhelming remains of popular visual culture, applies a highly reductive editing process to them and ends up with another – and more primary – set of materials. Like the crushed Coke can, the final product is a mere sliver of its former self: distinct enough to be recognisable and yet so distorted that we balk at the memory of its original form and our pleasure in using it. Yet Breitz’s work, however simple in its execution, is far from simplistic. Seymour, Tom.
