Dialogue
[first lines]
[Scene opens to a school shot (the footage would later be used in the opening sequence of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"), before panning to the gymnasium, where Peppermint Patty gathers with everyone else.]
Peppermint Patty: Okay, gang. We have somebody from our school entered in every event for the Junior Olympics. Except for the decathlon. Hmm...
Linus van Pelt: I sure don't wanna enter that event. You have to compete in ten different things. That's too much work.
Lucy van Pelt: Boy, who would be that dumb to want to enter the decathlon?
[Charlie Brown enters the scene.]
Charlie Brown: Hi, everybody. Hey, I'm not going on vacation after all. So now I can enter the track meet. Are there any events left open?
Linus van Pelt: Sure, Charlie Brown, but I really don't think that you would...
Lucy van Pelt: Hold it, Linus. You're in luck, Charlie Brown. There is one event left. It's just right for you. You don't have to be good at anything in particular.
Charlie Brown: Which event is that?
Lucy van Pelt: The decathlon, Charlie Brown.
Charlie Brown: The decathlon? Me in the decathlon?
Lucy van Pelt: Sure, Charlie Brown. You might be the next Bruce Jenner.
Charlie Brown: Me?
Linus van Pelt: It's an awful lot of work, Charlie Brown. You have to do a whole lot of training, and you have to compete in ten events.
Charlie Brown: Oh, that's okay, Linus. It'll be worth it if it helps the team.
[The title, "You're the Greatest, Charlie Brown," appears over the gang while they say the aforementioned title.]
Everyone: You're the greatest, Charlie Brown!
Lucy van Pelt: I can't believe it. After the first five events, you're in third place, Charlie Brown.
Charlie Brown: What's so good about that?
Lucy van Pelt: I thought you'd be dead last.
Charlie Brown: Who was last?
Lucy van Pelt: The Masked Marvel. Freddie Fabulous from Fremont and Marcie are neck and neck for first.
Peppermint Patty: You did okay, Chuck, and so did our team. In fact, if you can win the decathlon tomorrow, we might win the whole Junior Olympics.
Lucy van Pelt: Good grief! The whole world must be coming to an end.
[As the 1500m race starts, Charlie Brown gains an early lead.]
Charlie Brown: [thinking] Hey! I'm out in first. Maybe I do have a chence to win. Maybe I will be the hero. Wow!
Lucy van Pelt: [aghast] Charlie Brown has the lead! I may faint!
Peppermint Patty: [excited] Keep it up, Chuck! You're setting a good pace!
[[Charlie Brown's eyes are now closed as he is running.]
Charlie Brown: [still thinking] I'm going to win! I'm going to win the decathlon! They'll treat me like Bruce Jenner! Parades! Flowers! Wow!
[Peppermint Patty senses something wrong.]
Peppermint Patty: Chuck! Chuck! Pay attention, Chuck! Open your eyes!
[Charlie Brown keeps running straight forward while his competitors take the turn in the track.]
Peppermint Patty: [yelling] You took the wrong turn, Chuck! Chuck! TURN BAAAACK!
[Charlie Brown runs off the school grounds into a residential neighborhood, completely oblivious of what has happened.]
Charlie Brown: [still thinking] It's great being a winner. So peaceful and quiet.[Charlie Brown keeps running straight down the street.]''
Peppermint Patty: Good grief! He ran off the track. He lost the race.
