Tadhim Uwizeye is a Rwandan entrepreneur and e-commerce business development professional, and the founder and CEO of Olado (Olado Business Group), an e-commerce company she co-founded in 2017 to make online shopping easier in Rwanda and to promote locally manufactured, "Made in Rwanda" products alongside imported goods.
Uwizeye holds an academic background in computer science and information systems management, and brings roughly a decade of experience in information and technology services, with a focus on entrepreneurship and e-commerce. Before founding Olado, she served as Head of Operations at Jumia Technologies in Rwanda. Through Olado, she built an online marketplace connecting Rwandan buyers and sellers across categories including agro-processed food, fashion, electronics, household appliances and sports equipment, offering multiple payment options and door-to-door delivery both locally and internationally, while also helping other businesses integrate e-commerce solutions through software and consultancy services.
Uwizeye has described launching Olado as an early mover in a market where e-commerce was still unfamiliar to most Rwandans, requiring the company to build trust around a new way of shopping and around the safety of customers' personal information. Olado was one of the platforms selected to take part in the UN Capital Development Fund's "MSMEs Go Digital" project, launched with Rwanda's Ministry of ICT and Innovation and the ICT Chamber as part of a COVID-19 recovery and Inclusive Digital Economies strategy, which helped onboard more than 1,200 small and medium enterprises to digital commerce platforms. Beyond her company, Uwizeye serves as Vice Chair and board member of the Young ICT Entrepreneurs Association at the Rwanda ICT Chamber, mentors startups at 250 Startups, and in 2023 was selected as the Anglophone Africa Community Leader for eTradeforWomen, a UNCTAD initiative supporting women in e-commerce.
Quotes
"Starting an e-commerce platform in Rwanda as a startup was itself a challenge. E-commerce was really in its infancy; it was new, and few people knew what it was. We were really the first movers. That comes with a lot of challenges — convincing people to adopt a new way of shopping and selling, having the trust in the safety of their identifications and more."
