thumb|Jean Tirole Jean Marcel Pierre Tirole (born 9 August 1953) is a French economist who is currently a professor of economics at Toulouse 1 Capitole University. He focuses on industrial organization and game theory. In particular, he focuses on the regulation of economic activity in a way that does not hinder innovation while maintaining fair rules. Tirole's work is largely theoretical and explored in mathematical models, not empirical research. In 2014, he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his analysis of market power and regulation. The most relevant transaction costs are now the costs related to the reading of offers for the selection of partners or the reporting costs, and no longer the transport costs (...) our problem is to identify among the millions of partners with whom we could exchange the one that best meets our expectations. The almost infinite number of sources of information, and the limited time we have to process and understand them, put intermediaries at the center of the economic game: platforms (Amazon, Booking, eBay, Uber...). These platforms provide valuable information on both quality and matching by providing us with the reputation of sellers (...) The sharing economy falls into this category (Airbnb, Wingly, Drivy, blablacar...). Jean tirole, Economie du bien commun, 2016, p. 511. From an interview by Federico Fubini, Il premio Nobel, Tirole: «L'euro? Si salva condividendo i rischi», Corriere.it, 3 June 2017. Since the crisis [since 2008], with the renationalization of savings - banks invest in their country's government bonds - an important stabilizing factor has disappeared: the distribution of the fruits of savings among different countries in the euro area. And the lack of a European budget prevents an automatic redistribution of funds. Divergences in competitiveness, combined with rising public debt and banks, have brought very hard times for the people of Southern Europe. Many people do not want to believe that an excess of public debt endangers their social protection networks. They prefer to think that there will be miraculous growth, that it will absorb per capita debt, or that someone else will foot the bill.
