Quotes
The Ireland of to-day feels acutely that the springs of her greatness lie in the past, and that by restoring ancestral traditions, blending them naturally with existing social forms, and by drawing strength and dignity from the memories of pre-Christian and medieval Ireland, before the Anglo-Norman had deformed and strangled her, she may yet discover her true self, and start life afresh.
Impressions of Ireland (1913)
The distinctive character of modernism was the same indeterminacy of its program. It did not affect a particular point of official discipline.
Christianity is the only possible democracy; because in no other form of religious life, as in no other philosophical vision of life, the human aggregate, the sense of universal solidarity, the conscience of the only family in the world have, as in Christianity, as much importance and as inconsumable weight.
From a letter quoted in Giulio Andreotti, I quattro del Gesù, Rizzoli, 1999, p. 24.
[...], spiritualism is the only rational vision of the world that gives reason to the central facts of individual and associated life. Any system that is not a pseudophilosophical challenge to the laws governing thought can be traced, dialectically, back to spiritualism.
Apologia dello spiritualismo, A. F. Formiggini, Roma, 1926, pp. 12-13.
[...] it can legitimately be asserted, almost axiomatically, that even antispiritualistic systems are induced, against their will, by virtue of their own presuppositions and in accordance with their procedures, to pay implicit homage to spiritualism and to bring involuntary contribution and spontaneous support to its validity. Spirit is truth and good. And like the true and the good, it is, under the grip of an irrepressible need, recognized and admitted even by those who deny it.

One of the cardinal ideas, and a very just one, around which Missiroli's conceptions revolve, is that the real conflict in which the soul of our generation is tragically taken is the one that unfolds between the transcendentalist tradition of Catholic Christianity and the pure immanentist tendency of philosophy, born of the Renaissance. Missiroli is among the very few writers in Italy whom this disagreement has tried to outline more effectively.

Incipit
Saint-Beuve wrote: «Jansenius only provoked an uprising in the lap of Christianity. Descartes instead unleashed a universal revolution».
The verdict is unfair, and, even if the qualifier sounds iconoclastic, unintelligent. Unfair: because the historian, if he wishes to rule in a fair manner, can never institute comparative evaluations on systems of thought that blossomed at the same time, assuming as a criterion and canon the extent of their respective external success. Inintelligent: because Descartes has occasionally provoked a revolution, as the spirit of the times has isolated, by fas et nefas, the fire of the Jansenist uprising.
Quotes
(pp. 17-18)
The old editions at the Augustinus give the gaunt and aristocratic profile of Jansenius: broad and prominent forehead, deep dark circles, aquiline nose, sunken cheeks, pursed lips, give the impression of a very exquisite sensitivity and a diuturn internship of self-discipline. This son of farmers, whose precocious intelligence had been so severely hindered by family conditions that he was forced to interrupt his studies once to go and get a living in a carpenter's workshop, had well experienced the bitter and astonishing injustices that pervaded his life.
Jansenius was made to complete and mitigate the one-sidedness and practical malpractices of his too ardent temperament. A man of study and reflection, a refined and effective writer, despite the redundancies of his exquisite literary education, the Flemish theologian could bring to the program of the Christian rebirth the prerogative of a scrupulous patristic erudition.
The substance of Pelagianism as of Jesuitism, however paradoxical the assertion may appear, is of naked and simple Pythagorean, Stoic, Aristotelian ethical speculation. Therefore, what Tertullian once stated about heretics in general appears to be completely true of the Pelagians: «patriarchs of heretics, the philosophers». In fact, the basis of Pelagian preaching is the postulate that man is permitted to achieve the state of absolute perfect justice, to the point of impeccable impassibility.
(pp. 34-35)
Like the old philosophy, Pelagianism, a terrible counterfeit of Christianity, is a monstrous explosion of albagia. That it was possible after the revelation of the gospel constitutes clear proof that a terrible cancer is at the very roots of human spirituality, that the titanic element is not in man in a plane distinct from the Dionysian one, but that more severely it has invaded him in his dominion and poisoned him at his springs.
By the very fact of its existence, Pelagianism is inscribed as false against itself; because, in its essence and its connotations, it constitutes apodictic proof of the organic and functional perversion of man.
What indeed is it but vanity and fraud? if not flattery and cowardice? if not acquiescence and negittosity?
A perceptive psychologist and exquisite moralist, Jansenius casts the scrutiny of his most sensitive analysis into the deepest and most impervious layers of feeling and passion. His doctrine of guilt and redemption is a faithful projection and description of the elementary data of human spirituality in action.

Like many other churches in the Mediterranean West, the African one in general, and the Carthaginian one in particular, assert claims to an apostolic origin: albeit with less luxury than legendary details. Arab annalists and Byzantine historians, recording local traditions still entrusted to characteristic toponymic peculiarities, attribute the evangelization of Tripolitania and Tunisia to the apostle Philip, and that of Cyrenaica to Simon of Cana. There is no great case to be made of such late and contaminated testimonies. The first reliable memories of African Christianity are recognizable in the official account of some scenes of persecution and martyrdom, with which the Latin literature of the new religion solemnly records its entry into the full light of history.

For several decades, [...], Donatism was political opposition, religious rivalry, practical attitude, rather than theoretical position and abstract system. Nor did the Orthodox have the desire or comfort to methodically refute it. He was opposed by political power for them, which they did not petulantly tire of calling to help. (part two, chap. V, p. 322)
If Donatism is in direct continuity with pre-Constantinian Christianity, it should not imagine itself representing the only church for this reason. The church of Christ has the promises of universality, while the Donatist church has not crossed Africa's ethnic and territorial borders. And furthermore, after a heroic period of confessions and martyrdom, the Donatist church, especially during the Maure uprisings, came contracting the same disfiguring stains that it discovered in the official community. Incipit
Of a movement that had its first opportunity when it flared up in the innovative teaching of a monk, unfaithful to his vocation and rebellious to his church, it will be impossible to grasp the fundamental orientation and the normative presupposition, unless the spiritual reasons and impalpable coefficients that determined the evolution of his coryphaeus have been explored in advance. On the other hand, it will be very unpleasant to depict the motifs and fix the salient moments of the slow psychic elaboration, through which those who had asked the cloister for subsidies proportionate to their restless desire for perfection became the herald of the anti-ascetic crusade, if the origin of their religious call had not been sought in advance and they had not gone looking, in the years of their most tender adolescence, the possible remote predispositions to the immediate decision of 1505.

Ernesto Troeltsch, comparing the social conceptions of various Christian denominations, defined Luther's spiritual position as that of an innerweltlic Askese, of a mixed and immanent asceticism in the world. Luther's attitude, he observes, is ascetic, since the world does not constitute for him a set of absolute values, but rather a set of purely negative values, for themselves, since true values can only be found in the means of our reunion with God. (chap. III, p. 116)
Luther's personal experience, which considers good works as the automatic result of the human spirit transfigured by the merits of Christ, represents in practice a nullification of associated morality, which is all by definition based on the positive code of good and the assumption of the responsible human capacity to translate it into action. (chap. III, p. 192)
[...] Zwingli was able to earn from his preaching an impressive moral and pedagogical efficiency. Wise and shrewd, he manages, without noisy opposition and without sensation, to introduce into his canton the same innovations for which Luther had unleashed such a violent hurricane in Germany. The democratic constitution of the country helps him and second powerfully in the need. (chap. III, p. 195)
For Zwingli, too, the central problem in Christian religiosity is that of salvation. But nothing mystical or psychologically twisted about him. His attitude represents the practical and logical reflection of his thought, the real tradition of a philosophy. (chap. III, p. 196)
In the history of religious controversies within the Christian tradition, Eucharistic polemics are those that have aroused the most ready and sensitive social resonances. The Eucharistic mystery has such subtle connections with the federated life of the religious community that every real or presumed challenge with its realistic value has made the most intimate fibers of the ecclesiastical organism always tremble. (chap. III, pp. 199-200)
Zwingli taught that the Lord's supper is not an indefinite iteration of the sacrifice in which Christ sacrificed himself on the cross, but rather a commemoration of this sacrifice, offered once and for all. The Eucharistic elements therefore do not conceal a Christ, offered again, but rather want to be the symbolic signs of the body and blood of Christ, sacrificed on Calvary. (chap. III, p. 204)
Insisting so warmly on the works of personal sanctification and exchangeable edification, Pietism was not overly faithful to the anthropological and ethical conceptions of the Lutheran gospel. But the dark intuition of the now established impossibility of saving the associated ethics of believing humanity on the fragile assumption of rebirth in faith and justification in intimate adherence to Christ, induced spirits to strengthen and exalt the practice of personal piety, as the only bastion resistant to the spread of worldliness and profanity within the confines of the established Church. (chap.
Pietism was in reality nothing more than the exasperated expression of the acute and implacable disagreement that the Evangelical Church carried in its womb, between the extraetic nature of its soteriological dogma and the concrete needs of its disciplinary organization. It proclaimed that it did not wish to affect or impoverish in any way the construction of the theological edifice. But in fact the irrepressible need to revalue all those external forms of piety that Luther's anti-Roman insurrection had logically depreciated and infirmated, induced him to substantially alter the concrete norms and daily practice of Reformed religiosity. (chap.
[...] the old Teutonic spirit completely lacks a concept, which is basic in our Mediterranean tradition, the concept of sin, whether understood in the biblical value of a contaminating and repugnant stain, which deforms our moral figure, or understood in the Hellenic sense of deviation from the pre-established goal, of departure from the right path, due to a lack of cognition. (chap. VII, p. 385)
:*The strength of the German is to put himself at the service of his tribal destiny by imperturbably facing sacrifice and death. (chap. VII, p. 387)

The outbreak of war [in Germany] was but the latest result of a revival of the old characteristics of the race, already embryonic, so in the faith of the Lutheran Reformation, as in the typical forms of German idealistic culture. Drawing on ethnographers and Germanists of the Nazi era, today it has been possible to highlight the evident and recognizable continuity between the distant primordial instincts of the Germanic race and current German behavior, in the face of the world and universal civilization.

With one of its paradoxes, so prodigiously adhering to the reality of human life, that rationalism and the Enlightenment will never understand, the Gospel imposes contradictory delivery: to stretch out the arc of one's energies to the point of spasm, to serve the law of God, and at the same time prostrate oneself in the dust, to recognize, before the Father, that every service rendered to him is laughable and vain. By realizing to the point of absurdity, an old precept of Heraclitean philosophy, according to which one must recklessly overcome the testimony of the eyes and ears to emerge from the darkness of barbarism, Jesus inculcated that he did not recognize for the Father who begot us in the flesh, because there too the eyes and ears are fallacious witnesses. We have but a Father, that which is in heaven. The Christian who aspires not to demerit this tremendous qualification too much must approach never considering anything of his own, in what he does, but to discover, for everything, the provident and incessant action of those who hold him and guide him from heaven.

While with the first spring warmth of '44 the great world tragedy was approaching, albeit through such tortuous and complex paths, its unchangeable epilogue, I felt increasingly clear in my conscience that any meaning of the struggle that my generation, the generation of the exodus, had had to sustain on several fronts, to maintain faith in his Christian and priestly vocation and to fulfill his implacable task in the transforming world: to prepare the elements for the reconstruction of a new religious and evangelical consciousness, without which the advent of universal democracy would have been a mutilated, bloodless, and perishable achievement. Events portentously accelerated their pace. I tended my ear to the heralding signs of great palingenesis. I was spying on the horizon the rising of the lights that announced the last stages of our journey. And a single word flowed from my soul: «nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine!».

The most striking characteristics of Christian thought, which emerged, in pre-Scholastic Middle Latin, from the great Augustinian system, can be condensed into a very short system. First of all, it lacks a formal distinction between the dominion of philosophy and that of theology, between the order of rational truths and that of revealed truths. By rebound, the separation between nature and grace is implicitly erased, between the area in which the inherent capacities of rational being are exercised and the mysterious sphere of charismatic communications. (p. 10)
[...] it would be a gross error and an anachronistic illusion to imagine that there were pre-established harmonies between Aristotelianism and Christianity and that therefore the adaptation of one to the postulates of the other could be carried out with ease and without acrimonious and laborious contrasts. Instead, the fact remains that Aristotle's theories had given human thought an orientation and presupposed postulates intrinsically antithetical to the teachings of the Christian religion. Some principles of Aristotelian methodics, such as some assertions of the system regarding God and the soul, appear in irreconcilable contrast with the more peremptory assertions of Christian teaching. (pp. 13-14)
[...] who wants, in rapid lines, to circumscribe the position of St. Thomas in the trajectory of Catholic thought; who aims to discover in his most intimate essence, the original outline of the thinker and the mystic, whom the Roman Church has proclaimed a forerunner and perfect creator of his best apologetics; he must not so much slavishly reproduce the cycle of his argumentative chains, rather, he must investigate the positions in which his formidable intelligence and faith accomplished the grafting of aristotelian metaphysics on the new testamentary revelation. Because precisely S. Thomas marks a date in the history of religious thought of an importance that cannot be exaggerated, for the fact that in him reason and faith have celebrated a union whose fruitfulness is equal to its profound and integral interpenetration. (pp. 22-23)
The only way [...] to be able to effectively sculpt the Angelico's profile is one that aims to grasp the happy connection that he has made of speculative investigation with the pulse of mystical belief, in the context of the problems in which they connect and towards which the task of philosophy as the yearning for faith is thus pinned: being and its categories; the demonstration of God; the nature of God; the idea of God in the development of human thought; the divine and human in free action. (p. 23)
Dio!
God! St. Thomas has presented it this way ever since, following in the footsteps of Aristotelian psychology, he was about to formulate his measured solution to the problem of truth. Driven by that need which since the beginning of the 12th century had been felt in the field of Christian thought, and which anxiously tended towards the determination of a rational demonstration of the divine, the Angelic is automatically prepared by preparing the logical and metaphysical coefficients of his theodicy, all supported by the buttresses of a realistic epistemology, according to which human intelligence is recognized as capable of discovering in things the causal mechanism that draws its truth from its eternal adaptation to the initial patterns of creative intelligence. But one has to ask whether all his speculation[8] is not subject to the hidden action of faith of which he is an apologist: if the axiom that to seek God, one must have already found him does not apply to him either. (pp. 31-32)
Incipit of some works
La Chiesa romanaErnesto Buonaiuti, La Chiesa romana, Gilardi e Noto, Milano, 19332Of all the Christian denominations, the church of Rome has the largest number of members in the world. And at the same time that which possesses the strongest and most coherent doctrinal structure and the most rigid and supervised disciplinary organization. To what extent the two circumstances are interdependent, that is, to what extent the mature arrangement of the conceptual heritage and the unitary hierarchy have contributed and still contribute in Catholicism to the breadth of proselytism, it is not appropriate to investigate here. And it is not even appropriate to ask ourselves now whether the number of adherents is, for a constituted religion, an absolute title of excellence (when Jesus died, was God perhaps with the majority?) and whether the spiritual, that is, specific, action of a church should, by definition, be recommended to the cogent empire of an abstract and rational system, of a centralizing mechanical bureaucracy.
Lo gnosticismoErnesto Buonaiuti, Lo gnosticismo Storia di antiche lotte religiose, Libreria Editrice Francesco Ferrari, Roma, 1907.Gnosticism, by definition, can be said to be any system that, full of confidence in the initial capacities of reason, believes it can solve the various problems of being, with confidence and outside of any external enlightenment: the word γνῶσις[9] is used by the classics as a synonym for knowledge. But for constant use, this designation has a narrower scope, and usually indicates some special doctrines, which flourished in various eras of the history of philosophy, which, born from a bizarre interpenetration of mysticism and rationalism, have closed themselves in a terminology of mystery and an aristocratic reserve, almost disdaining the minute propaganda of their principles among the lower strata of society: for the Pythagoreans as for Plato, γνῶσις means a higher contemplation of the infinite. A strange and at first glance indecipherable manifestation of thought that, between the first and third centuries of Christianity, undermined the evangelical tradition, and, borrowing some cosmological concepts from neo-Platonism and other soteriological ones from Christianity, also satisfied the syncretistic tendencies of that historical period, and died overwhelmed by the less refined, but democratic and healthy, current of Catholicism, is called Gnosticism par excellence.
PascalErnesto Buonaiuti, Pascal, Edizioni Athena, Milano, 1927.Augustine, as universally normative as his name means, was not born in 354, he did not die in 430. The experience that he dramatically lived and whose memory he entrusted to the Confessions was and is the experience in which every conscious spirituality is resolved, instinctively. The problem to which, in explaining the controversy with Pelagius, he imposed a brutally realistic solution, to which propitious historical circumstances have conferred exceptional capacities for realization, has been and is the vital core of every associated ethics and every universalistic religiosity.
TertullianoErnesto Buonaiuti, Tertulliano, Edizioni Athena, Milano, 1926.'''
Born in Carthage to a proconsular centurion, that is, the commander of one of those detachments of the third legion that the legate of Numidia sent under the orders of the proconsul of Africa, Quintus Septimius Florentius Tertullian must have preserved forever something of the images and customs, under whose impression his childishness and adolescence had familiarly developed, even when the Christian profession made the profession of arms appear to him incompatible with the Gospel. The education and instruction he received were highly sought after. The literary erudition scattered with all hands throughout the writings, the dialectical dexterity sparkling from each of these incisions, are faith in it. Of course, the first sources of his formation were all pagan. The sumptuous and noisy world of the circus and the theatre, of the forum and of public schools, had in Tertullian as a young man, a passionate frequenter.
