Quotes about
Carnevale [...] stated in an interview [...] that he has no need for sleeping pills at night because, as far as the Law is concerned, his conscience is clear. We certainly believe that. But if he were to ask himself the same question with regard to Justice, I wonder whether his sleep would be quite so peaceful. And yet we realise that he will never ask himself this question; indeed, it would strike him as utterly preposterous. Because, for an Italian magistrate, the law has nothing whatsoever to do with justice.

I told him [to Giovanni Falcone] that the Mafia were worried because there was no longer any Carnevale. Carnevale was our stronghold in the Court of Cassation. It’s incredible that he’s still a judge.
[About the Carnevale’s conviction, which was later overturned] An execution, a despicable sentence, a moment of triumph for left-wing ethical neo-fascism.
Marco Pannella, from an interview by Felice Cavallaro and Giovanni Bianconi, Mafia, condannato il giudice Carnevale, Corriere della Sera, 30 June 2001, p. 5.
