Steve Bloom was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1953. He is a self-taught photographer and writer whose career has taken him from documenting apartheid-era South Africa to becoming an internationally recognised wildlife photographer. In the 1970s, Bloom photographed life under apartheid, including communities affected by forced removals, homelessness and racial segregation. His photographs were subsequently published and exhibited in Britain, and their political significance contributed to his exile from South Africa in 1977.
