Quotes
Neoliberalism should not be analyzed at a logical-economic level: it should be analyzed at a psychiatric level, neoliberalism is a psychiatric phenomenon. It's the name of everything I hate.

Michele Boldrin: "Il debito pubblico?
[...] no serious public debt is repaid! The most serious public debts in the history of world finance, those of the English Empire, had by definition the following explanation: we will never repay this money to you. You give me a hundred pounds? I spend them however I want because I'm the queen and then I promise I'll pay you 2.5-3% forever.
[...] constantly pushing the argument of having to repay the debt means suggesting: "Look, I'm an unreliable debtor."
The debt-to-GDP ratio serves precisely to demonstrate that you are able to pay interest; that the ratio between what you are exposed to and how much revenue you generate is stable; and that therefore there is reason to believe that you will be able to satisfy this debt indefinitely. What matters from a creditor's perspective is the state's ability to extract resources from the private economy by turning it into tax revenue to service the debt.
When you are a credible country, with a growing GDP, you don't have to invent engineering techniques. If the political class had the ability to shift the focus from public debt to the problems of growth, adjusting the tax burden, improving productivity, I believe the world might even say, "Italians no longer want to play tricks."
