Aliis Aalmann (born 16, December 1995) is an Estonian poet and teacher. In 2021, she was awarded the Betti Alver Poetry Prize. In 2024, she received the Gustav Suits Poetry Award for her poetry collection "Väe võim" ("The Power of Force") and the Friedebert Tuglas Short Story Award for her short story "Mina ei käinud siis veel koolis" ("I Didn't Go to School Yet"). Translation: I was just walking home, clutching a poetry collection "Poems" by Heiti Talvik bought from the Re-use Centre, and happened to read "Morning of the Bard". I actually snorted out loud. Those lines magically created a good mood. But there are different levels of magic. A single phrase is enough for the brain to start producing happy hormones. In that sense, words also give "strength". And at this point, it probably doesn't make that much difference whether I came up with the phrase or someone else did, the aha moment is still there. Teisalt on sõnadel ka äraspidine jõud. Ma olen tulihingeliselt vaielnud vastu, et mina ei lähe mitte kunagi eesti keelt õppima, aga nüüd on kaks kraadi eesti ja soome-ugri keeleteaduses käes. Samuti olen vaielnud, et õpetajat minust ei saa, nüüd tegelikkus pilkab mind. Eks seda irooniat on mujalgi olnud. Translation: On the other hand, words also have a perverse strength. I have fiercely argued that I will never study the Estonian language, but now I have two degrees in Estonian and Finno-Ugric linguistics. I have also argued that I will not become a teacher, and now reality is mocking me. Well, that irony has been present elsewhere too. Translation: And some words haunt you. There must be some power in them that won't let go. Whether it is magical – I'd rather use that for positive words – but it has some kind of effect. Words or expressions that have a positive meaning tend to be forgotten faster than those spoken out of malice or heedlessly. But the sound of words and the resulting associations or mental images stimulate the brain and give some inexplicable breath. Translation: Is it wind in the soft wings of inspiration or rather defiance, but words feed me. It is unthinkable that I wouldn't write down a single thought. That would leave me hungry and poor in the sense that I am sorry if thoughts sink into oblivion and can never be retrieved. So to be rich you need notebooks to fill and writing instruments to write with. Just as an athlete cannot do without sport, I cannot do without writing. Of course, there are worse days when I can't write anything, but on those occasions, one should rather ask whether the trouble is that I can't, or rather that I'm afraid my words have no value. And then you have to look for that magical word. The one that would ignite passion, whether it's self-discovery, some piece of writing you've read, or someone else's encouragement. Ma olen alati pidanud ennast suhteliselt halvaks (kõrg)kultuuri tarbijaks...Nüüd mõtlesin, et kui ta juba nii ahvatlevalt riiulilt vastu vaatab, on see selge märk, et pean ta endaga koju viima ja lugema. Ütlen ausalt, ma ei saa väga midagi aru. Võib-olla ma ei küüni selleni, võib-olla see mõistmine tuleb hiljem. Translation: I have always considered myself a relatively poor consumer of (high) culture...Now I thought that since it's looking back at me so temptingly from the shelf, it's a clear sign that I must take it home with me and read it. To be honest, I don't really understand much. Maybe I don't reach that level, maybe this understanding will come later. See, mis mind raamatute juures võlub, on põnevus ja ka poeetiline keel. Translation: What fascinates me about books is the excitement and also the poetic language.
