Lori Jo Pierce is an American radiation oncologist and 57th President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.[1] She is a Full Professor and Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs at the University of Michigan. During her residency, Pierce wrote a seminal paper on radiation and breast-conserving surgery in African American women compared with their white counterparts. This began her interest in medical racism; the racial bias in medicine and specifically against black women. Quotes As African Americans, we are acutely aware that for almost every metric, we see a disparate outcome, with Black and brown people doing worse. Cancer is certainly no different. My desire to enter medicine was further defined by otherformative experiences I had at home in DC With radiation oncology, I was able to enjoy the combination of patient care, physics, and biology. And I realized, I was at my best when I was in the clinic seeing patients. Even as a young child, seeing him practice medicine resonated with me and inspired me to think about becoming a physician. He was truly a role model I always tell junior faculty to play to the strength of their institution. When you first come in, try not to do something totally different than what others in your institution do. Get your footing on the strengths of your institution and work with a mentor while you're learning the ropes and then become independent with your own new ideas. You want to be focused, then bring new ideas into an existing infrastructure and go from there. External links
