Fictional last words in graphic art

The following is a list of last words attributed to various fictional characters in comic books, including print anime and manga, as well as graphic novels. Characters are listed according to source (i.e. the originating work), then the name of character the quote is attributed to (in case of more than one quote per source). Where quotes come from a series of texts, they are organised in the order of the texts they appeared in. Where possible, for the purposes of clarification, further explanatory notes have been presented. Additionally, if a character's final words consist of a dialogue with the other characters, the other character's speech may be included for contextual purposes; for example, if one character asks a question that the one who is about to die answers. Some characters may have more than one "death," in instances such as being resurrected, or existing temporarily as an undead being. In some of those instances, their last words from each "death" may be added if they are significant. Additionally, significant last words from deaths that are merely assumed to have happened or are non-canon are included. Additionally, in instances where there are multiple outcomes, or in media with alternate timelines, the character's last words will be featured. A-Z Can't I? Just watch me mate! Who: Kangaroo (Frank Oliver) Source: The Amazing Spider-Man #126: The Kangaroo Bounces Back Note: The character battled Spider-Man a second time, he attempted to retrieve a radioactive isotope behind a door. Spider-Man tried to convince him that the isotope is dangerous and that the concentrated gamma rays would burn him up in seconds, but Kangaroo doesn't listen, as he bursts into the room with the isotope and is reduced to a pile of ashes upon exposure to the radiation. Was later revived as a proto-husk by Arnim Zola, only to be killed again by Deadpool. Not like this. NOT LIKE THIS! LIKE THIS!!! Who: Clint Hawkeye Barton Source: Avengers: Disassembled (Avengers vol. 3 #500-#503) by Brian Michael Bendis Note: Said while flying into a Kree battleship. Is later revived in New Avengers #26. If this were still my dream...I would do ANYTHING to protect you...anything...to protect that eternal moment... Who: Desty Nova Source: Battle Angel Note: Is decapitated by main character Alita after having been inside a dream matrix with her and acting as a father figure to her instead of enemy. Revives later thanks to backup brain chip in stomach. ...I won't go back to Kaos' body...to die here...is...fitting. Who: Den Source: Battle Angel Note: Is mortally wounded by Factory forces charging into the Scrapyard and breaks apart after bringing his sword down upon one of the Tipharean tubes only for his sword to break in half. ...Thank You. Who: Eddie Lee Source: BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad Note: Before the release of The Last Day of Eddie Lee, it was believed his final words were, "Hey, do you need any help?" The last words are said while he is on a California highway. He sees a man and his daughter on the side of the road, their van broken down. When Eddie asks to help, the man, 41 year-old Jose Gonzalez, is silent. His daughter runs off just before Jose pulls out a pistol and shoots Eddie Lee at point-blank range. Jose, unemployed, was looking to rob a man due to the facts that his rent was piling up and that he couldn't send his daughter to a good dentist. So it's a fight you want, is it?! Why, I’ll tear you limb from... [Calvin: Yeah? Yeah?] [He suddenly vanishes] Oops! I had an evil thought! Who: Calvin's good side Source: Calvin and Hobbes Notes: Calvin's good side had been created through the use of an "ethicator," but a fight started after he realized that he could not do favors for Susie Derkins with Calvin's reputation. He says these lines, and begins to disintegrate after Calvin's line; by having an evil thought, he violated his status as perfectly good. F-fire! Who: Ernest Cuore Source: Candidate for Goddess Note: The character says this line to fellow Goddess Pilot, Gareas Elidd in battle. The character is fatally wounded by the enemy leader and is marking himself as the target for Gareas' attack. (The line directly preceding this is Gareas': I can't shoot you!!!) Gareas then attacks, killing both Ernest and the enemy. Get ready for the shortest comeback in history, Thor! Who: Goliath (Bill Foster) Source: Civil War #4. Rot in hell, Max. [Black Beetle: "Don't you see? You can't die!"] I have to. Who: Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) Source: Countdown to Infinite Crisis (D.C Comics comic book) Note: Is said in response to being offered employment under Maxwell Lord, a supervillain. Character is shot immediately afterwards. Second line was said after his friend Booster Gold traveled back in time to save him, with disastrous consequences. Ultimately he chose to head back in order to fix time. Matt... Who: Elektra Natchios, addressing Daredevil (real name: Matt Murdock), after crawling to his apartment after being stabbed by Bullseye Source: Daredevil #181 (Marvel comic book) Note: In the 2003 film, her last words are instead "Help me," although still addressed to Daredevil. It should also be noted that she is resurrected later on. [Reed Richards: But I swear to you that I will spend the rest of my life forgetting you] Think again. Who: Dr. Doom Source: Fantastic Four by Mark Waid and Mike Weiringo Note: Spoken shortly before being dragged into Hell as a result of Richards' plans; line followed by Doom permanently scarring Reed's face. Character was later returned to Earth. Hey, hey. Give me a break. I've got a wife and kid waiting for me at home. I CAN'T AFFORD TO DIE YET! Who: Maes Hughes Source: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga) Notes: The character turns to throw a dagger at the attacking homunculus 'Envy', only to find that the enemy has transformed into a copy of Hughes' wife. Envy mocks "You wouldn't stab your own wife, would you?" and shoots Hughes, killing him. You win. I hate to lose...but if I must die, I'm glad it's at the hands of a man like you. Those eyes, so clear and focused...I love them. I look forward to seeing those eyes become clouded with suffering. That day will come...very...soon... Who: Lust Source: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga) Notes: Spoken to Roy Mustang after a long battle. The character then disintegrates, her philosopher's stone having been destroyed. How humiliating... reduced to this pathetic form... with you humans... you pieces of shit mocking me... and worst of all, the lowest, most disgusting one of you... that fucking kid, is the one who understands how I feel! It's the ultimate insult! How much further will that simplistic outlook on life take you? Good luck. Bye bye, Ed... ward... Elric... Who: Envy Source: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga) Notes: Character had been defeated by Roy Mustang, and tried in vain to pit him, Riza Hawkeye, Edward Elric and Scar against one another. Ed then reveals that Envy is jealous of humans for their ability to persist and their friendships, angering him to the point where he takes his own life by destroying his Philosopher's Stone. ...Lois... Who: Earth-2 Superman Source: Infinite Crisis #7. Of course. It's time. Who: Lady Edith Manning Source: The Invisibles, by Grant Morrison Kiss the girls and make 'em cry for me, Ringo. Who: Jolly Roger Source: The Invisibles by Grant Morrison In a moment you will see what you have always been. I, too, will see what I have always been. We will be together in our understanding. Who: Archibald "Archie" Andrews Source: Life with Archie: The Married Life #36 Note: Character is fatally shot by a bullet from Wendell's gun, which was intended for his gay friend and senator Kevin Keller in both timelines. Although Wendell is apprehended, character lies on the floor and asks if everyone is okay. Though Betty urges him to hold on until help arrives, he is already dying, and confesses his love for both her and Veronica in these words before he dies, leaving everyone in tears. I'm sad... Not sad... because I'm dying. Right now I'm sad... because my child died. People... can't lose their emotions. My emotions... were just lost somewhere... where I couldn't find them. Just like a letter from someone that was addressed to me... finally arrived decades after it was mailed. Is this true sadness? Or is it happiness? ...In the last episode of the Magnificent Steiner, he must have... gone back to being a human. Who: Wolfgang Grimmer Source: Monster (Manga) Notes: Upon seeing and unarmed civilian murdered, Grimmer gives into his rage and kills four ex-Stasi before succumbing to gunshot wounds. His last words refer to a television show called the Magnificent Steiner(similar to the Incredible Hulk) that he watched as a child. Go ahead. And try to aim better this time. Who: Ryoji Kaji Source:Neon Genesis Evangelion manga Note: Spoken to his anonymous assassin, after already being shot once. I can't feel anything... Who: Blink of Earth 616 Source: Phalanx Covenant Note: Character has used her powers to tear apart Harvest, but was caught in her own blink wave and shredded. Go get him, big guy...kltpzyxm... Who: Mr. Mxyzptlk Source: Superman: Day of Vengeance Notes: Weakened by the removal of Earth's magic, the near-omnipotent Mr. Mxyzptlk was left to wander Metropolis alone. Befriending Superman, he sensed that Ruin, a villain, had kryptonite traps waiting to kill the Man of Steel. He pushed him out of the way of a spear, and it pierced his heart. Just before Mr. Mxyzptlk died, he whispered his name backwards, which (in the series) sends him back to the Fifth Dimension, so he may have survived. KLTPZYXM...NOOOOOOOOOOO! Who: Mr. Mxyzptlk Source: Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? Notes: This incarnation of Mxyzptlk was more evil than others, setting about a chain of events in motion that killed many of Superman's loved ones. When the Man of Steel threatened him with the Phantom Zone Projector, Mxyzpltk panicked and attempted to say his own name backward, sending him back into the Fifth Dimension. Superman fired the projector at the exact same moment, catching Mxyzpltk between two dimensions and tearing him apart. Doomsday... Is he...Is he... Who: Superman Source: Superman #75 (Jan 1993) by Dan Jurgens Notes: After a fight with the monster Doomsday left the city of Metropolis destroyed, Superman asks this question before dying from his injuries. Although both appeared to be dead, they would eventually be resurrected. Legato: (placing his head against Vash's gun) Go ahead. It won't bother me. An egotistical being like myself can't be allowed to live. Give me nothingness. Give me death. He is waiting. He is looking forward to your visit. Who: Colonel Abdul Al-Rahman Source: The Ultimates 2 Note: Character has had his hands cut off in a fight with Captain America, who then stabs him with his own weapon and says "No jokes, Abdul." So even the sword has forsaken me. Who: Gion Toji Source: Vagabond Notes: Toji attacks Miyamoto Musashi after Musashi returns from a year-long pilgrimage. Although the two were of roughly equal skill before Musashi left, Musashi quickly slashes Toji's throat. Later it is shown that Toji's family and fellow peers at the Yoshioka Dojo despised him while he was alive. Kojiro... We embrace each other through our swords. Who: Igaya Koun Source: Vagabond Notes: Koun duels with Sasaki Kojiro, these being his final thoughts. Following the way... Putting everything into the sword. Character tells him that Lucius is thought to have deserted Gran'ma Ben and the Bones to the Rat Creatures, but Ted reassures him that Lucius is no traitor. Character asks Ted if he thinks the Headmaster of the Veni Yan may forgive said character for telling him that Lucius is not a traitor; Ted agrees and asks him if he will be okay before heading off. In a sad irony, it is later revealed that said character never made it and died in the eruption of the volcano that had been enacted by the Lord of the Locusts. You can't teach me ANYTHING! Who: Tarsil Source: Bone: Crown of Horns Notes: Briar Harvestar, the Hooded One, attempts to reclaim the kingdom of Atheia and asks character to surrender unconditionally. Character refuses and reveals his scarred face as proof that he fought with the dragons. In response, Briar pulls back her hood and reveals herself in his more comely face to his shock, then lunges at him and slices him in two with her scythe. KILL ME! [Thorn: No.] I WAS THE ONE WHO ATE YOUR PARENTS. I FED ON YOUR MOTHER WHILE SHE WAS STILL ALIVE. Who: Kingdok Source: Bone: Crown of Horns Notes: Thorn Harvestar, with the piece of the Locust inside her, has reached the Chamber of Horns and discovered the Crown of Horns. All of a sudden character arrives and asks her to kill him in order to reach the Crown. He tells her that he was once a king but is now a slave and a puppet without a will of his own, and that he was the one who devoured her parents and fed on her mother, Queen Lunaria, while she was still alive. Nevertheless, Thorn refuses and tries going for the Crown, but he catches her by the teeth and punctures her leg with it. Thorn then pulls out her sword and pierces him through his brain, killing him instantaneously. LUCIUS! ♥ Who: Briar Harvestar Source: Bone: Crown of Horns Notes: During the final battle, Briar attempts to kill her sister Rose, but then Lucius appears to Briar's surprise and holds her off. At the same time, Thorn is held off by the dead Kingdok's jaws, unable to touch the Crown of Horns; but Fone Bone arrives to help her. Using static buildup, he allows the piece of the Locust in her to flow through him to the Crown, and at his touch, it triggers an explosion of energy that kills Briar along with Lucius. ROSE! Who: Lucius Down Source: Bone: Crown of Horns Notes: Character sees Briar injure her sister Rose with her scythe and attempt to kill her in a mad cackle, but he holds her off. At the moment that Fone allows Thorn's piece of the Locust to flow through him to the Crown and touches it, it triggers an explosion of energy that kills off Briar along with Lucius. Claymore (manga) All right then, I'll put you out of your misery. [Her hands are sliced off] Eh? Who: Teresa Source: Volume 5, Scene 23: Marked for Death, Part 6 Note: Said to Priscilla, who begs Teresa to stop her from becoming an Awakened Being and losing her humanity. After she says this, Priscilla cuts off her hands and head. Well done. You win. As promised, I entrust you with everything. After all I can't do any more at this point anyways. Who: David Harmon Source: War Machine #3 Note: Refers to how his company, Eaglestar International, can't be prosecuted. Is then shot twice by Dr. Glenda Sandoval. Actually last word is expletive. They're just ants Jimmy. Who: Dr. Glenda Sandoval Source: War Machine #4 Note: Refers to the first time she and James Rhodes had met. Is revived shortly afterwards by Ultimo tech. Aah... Wait... No... Who: Hummel Source: War Machine #7 Note: Is shot in the head by a terrorist after saying this. Actually took place prior to Dark Reign. This is Misa's happiness... to be with Light Yagami...
