Quotes
That little girl would be just as amazed as I am. Honestly, there was no blueprint. There was only a wide-eyed, curious, energetic little girl. I mean, I knew I had the arts in me. Even when I was very, very young, I would put on plays or dances and make my family sit in the living room and watch me dance and perform. I don't even know where that came from because we didn't have TVs in our house. And if we went to the movies, it was rare, like maybe once a year, if that at all. So, I think it was just in me, but having no blueprint, I just sort of did it by the seat of my pants and, like, wow.
I would have to say that came later in life, honestly. In my 40s, going through a divorce and really taking stock of where I was, how my life was developing, and realizing that a lot of things that were put upon me weren't necessarily mine to carry. That's why I say it's not about becoming someone new, it's remembering. Because as we come along in life, people start putting labels on you from a very, you know, itty-bitty baby. Whether it's about your being too skinny or being overweight or being too tall. Or if you're cranky one day, it's like, "Oh, is she always cranky?" I think we all start getting labels put on us and sometimes we take those on us. And so remembering who you were is when you had hope, when you were hopeful, when you wished for things and thought there were all these possibilities of achieving those things without the limitations that are put on you as you get older or you see things in a certain way.
I used to say marrying an agent took my innocence away because there were times where I thought, "Oh, my God, of course I'm going to get this movie opposite Brad Pitt." And then realizing how it really works, and packaging. So, all these things sort of take away your curiosity, takes away from your hopefulness. I want to get back to where we were hopeful and there were no limitations and we could dream.
In real life, for me, it's really being intentional about what I do, who I'm with. My intentions, really. It's about, I think, getting to a certain age where you don't give as much AFs anymore. I understand that this is our one life. We don't have a do-over; this is not a rehearsal. If this is truly the one life I get, I get to choose. I get to choose the joys in my life. I get to choose the people that I'm surrounded by. And if you're going to be negative, if you're going to bring drama, I don't want that. That's not what I want. For me, that's being intentional every day, like who has access to me. I used to be such a people pleaser growing up, and even in my adulthood, but now I'm very choosy about that. And I'm so happy I got here.
Yeah, that's absolutely—and listen, I am loyal, loyal, loyal, loyal until you really hit me over the head and I realize it. I even say this in the book, considering everything that I've been through, the fact that I'm still so open to sharing, to inviting people into my life, I'm surprised by it, but I think there is something to loyalty in friendships and relationships. But there's also a bit of selfishness when it's like, "Well, wait a minute, am I getting the same thing in return?"
They are watching, yeah. Jaid bought flowers not only for his girlfriend but also her mother. And it was just the most thoughtful thing I had ever seen. It made me relax a little bit because it's like, well, maybe they are getting something, somehow.
