Labiba Ahmad (1870s – 1951) was an Egyptian Islamic activist, philanthropist, traveller and writer. She was born in Cairo, the daughter of Ahmad 'Abd al-Nabi Bey, a medical doctor. She married 'Uthman Pasha Murtada, a judge, and had a son and five daughters. A nationalist, she joined Mustafa Kamil Pasha's Watani Party, and marched in the 1919 Ladies' Demonstrations. After the Egyptian Revolution of 1919, she did not join the Women's Wafd Central Committee associated with the Wafd Party. Instead, she founded the Society of Egyptian Ladies' Awakening, to promote Islamic nationalism and provide welfare services to the poor. She started a monthly magazine, al-Nahda al-Nisa`iyya (Women's Awakening) to promote the views of the Society. Quotes “It is not consistent with the dignity of an Eastern girl to be an actress or dancer in an environment rife with corruption and frivolity. There is nothing wrong with an Egyptian woman standing on stage to promote virtue, oppose vice and represent noble morals; an actress is an educator. Dancing, however, in any form, is not something we approve of.” Women Striving in Modern Times “As long as I live, I remain devoted to preserving memories of goodness, loyal to everyone in whom I have found virtue and noble qualities, and holding fast to the hope that God will grant success and guide my steps in every action and every moment of rest, so that all may be in pursuit of His pleasure, God willing.” Women Striving in Modern Times External Link Category:1870 births Category:1951 deaths Category:Anti-war activists Category:Egyptian people
