Daniel O. Fagunwa (1903 – 7 December 1963), also known as Chief Daniel Olorunfęmi Fágúnwà, was a Nigerian author of Yoruba heritage who pioneered the Yoruba language novel. Quotes about Daniel O. Fagunwa He was a regular father like most fathers, to be frank. He was warm, friendly and understanding. He was very accessible to us, generous to a fault and doting. He loved us. ‘Sìstá’ (sister) Ìbùkún and ‘Brọ̀da’ (brother) Fẹ́mi were studying in the UK. He was generous and nice to them. His letters to my mum that I came across showed he took good care of them. All his books taught me many values. I was quite young when he passed away but old enough to benefit from his warmth and learnt virtuous lessons from him and what he left behind. He was a friendly person and comfortable to be with. He invested in people and friendship. I learnt to build friendships and have no regrets thus far. He was an intelligent writer with great pen skills that matched any writer anywhere in the world. He had the lucidity of Arabian narrators, the smoothness of Ladoke Akíntọ́lá’s oratory and the philosophic insight of the Egyptian mystery system. Dad’s novels preach the kind of unity Nigeria needs – The late D. O. Fagunwa’s son by Gbenga Adeniji, January 5, 2020 DO Fágúnwà was a Yorùbá property and an image of Yorùbá folklore as well as an epitome of its cultural sagacity. He was the first person to write a complete story in the Yorùbá language and until date his writings continue to inspire Yorùbá culture and legacy. HE DIED 60 YEARS AGO – REMEMBERING D.O.
