After Everything (also known as Eternal Love (UK); originally titled Shotgun) is a 2018 comedy-drama film about Elliot, a carefree 23-year-old New Yorker whose life is upended when he falls for a woman named Mia and is diagnosed with cancer in the same week. Instead of ending with the typical “triumph over illness” trope, the film focuses on their relationship being tested by the emotional aftermath, stress, and reality of surviving the disease.
Written and Directed by Hannah Marks and Joey Powers.
Mia
Tinder has made you forget how to talk to girls in person. And now, you’re suffering due to no reception.
It’s not that I don’t love you. I do love you. You’re my first love. I… I just don’t… I just don’t know if you’re my only love.
Dialogue
Dr. Lisa Harden: What the fuck?
Elliot: I… I didn’t know doctors could say “fuck” to their patients.
Dr. Lisa Harden: We can when the patient is behaving like an idiot.
(Last lines)
Mia: Yeah, you can… you can walk in front of me. It would make it less weird.
Elliot: No. That would probably be more weird. (pause) Hey, you could wear your headphones.
Mia: I don’t have my headphones.
Elliot: Really?
Mia: You know, I just talk to the people.
Elliot: Uh-huh!
Mia: Really take in that New York texture.
Elliot: Maybe. Maybe I can get that hand job?
Mia: What?!
Elliot: You remember? The time on the train.
Mia: Yes. I was drunk.
Elliot: (laughs) So, that’s a no then?
Mia: I’ll see to that.
Elliot: Yeah?
Mia: (indistinguishable chatter as they walk down the stairs of the subway)
