Mario Marenco (1933 - 2019) was an Italian designer, actor and comedian.
From an interview by Paolo Di Stefano, "Alto gradimento"? Che tradimento!, Corriere.it, 5 July 2010
The hype and consensus of years past was comforting, now you're stagnating in a boring life and I tend to isolate myself. If you're minding your own business and no one calls you, it's no fun.
[On the city of Rome] This is a mediocre city, which forgets everything, a bit amorphous, lacking the great enthusiasm and the great themes.
[On the radio show Alto gradimento] It wasn't a group but a random agglomeration, a way of making each other useful. We still see each other occasionally, but the deliberate intent to do things as a team is lacking. Time does not wait for us, it passes and away.
[On the forty years of the program Alto gradimento] I see that this forty-year anniversary is celebrated with interviews. Arbore and Boncompagni speak: "We did, we did, we did." Well, the real authors, on the other hand, were Bracardi and I, but nobody recognizes us. And the rights of Siae went to the Fatherland.
[On contemporary comedy] The one on TV, I don't even smile about it: comedy should really make you laugh and you only see things that do and make someone's verse. I prefer watching tennis. Guzzanti I must have seen it twice. Grillo seems more effective to me with his ranting, he gets some sweaty.
Quotes about
He was too modest. Today you have to sell yourself and Mario shunned all of this. He was a crazy horse. For me, Boncompagni and Frassica was the greatest, a true intellectual. On the Other Sunday, when he took his leave with that greeting, "Waldheim", the name of an Austrian politician. Then the crazy correspondences from the Tiber, when he explained that Muzio Scevola's stump had been found.
Renzo Arbore, from an interview by Silvia Fumarola, Renzo Arbore "Un genio assurdo, nemmeno Fellini riuscì a domarlo", la Repubblica, 18 March 2019, p.24.
Mario started out as a "cursed poet": he would mumble crazy verses («Tu sei un asino/ tu fai "i"/ tu fai "o"/ tu fai "io"») and jump out the window… At a festival next to me was Giorgio Bracardi, who squeaked while singing Vanoni. «Why are you making these verses?». «It's a bird I created, Scarpantibus». I invited him to the radio and he soon became our co-author, together with Mario.
Renzo Arbore, from an interview by Maria Maura Giovagnini, Renzo Arbore: La nostra rivoluzione ad… To smile at the age of smiling, between 16 and 18, we had to grab someone by the nose, feed ourselves with ideas, pranks. We also had the surreal streak in common. Woe betide anyone who is banal! In this, however, Marenco beat anyone: he always threw them off. I explained it to Fellini who tried to cast him as the protagonist of City of Women: you can't tame him, he does the opposite of what you want.
