thumb|Adoration of the Shepherds (Lotto) The Adoration of the Shepherds is the traditional name for a New Testament episode in the story of Jesus's nativity, which is the subject of many works of art. In it shepherds are near witnesses to Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, arriving soon after he is actually born. The episode is recounted, or at least implied, in the Gospel of Luke and follows on from the annunciation to the shepherds, in which the shepherds are summoned by an angel to the scene of the birth. Like the episode preceding it, the adoration is a common subject in art, where it is often combined with the Adoration of the Magi. In such cases it is typically just referred to by the latter title. Quotes about Bible So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. Gospel of Luke 2:15-20 NKJV. Others Maravigliando a quel celeste avviso | vanno i pastor dell'abituro in traccia, | e del nato Fanciul. Marveling at that heavenly announcement, the shepherds of the hut set off in search of the newborn Child. The fields and hills around them glowed with bright lights. Then, when they reached the humble manger in the city, they recognised the already foretold son in the appearance of the venerable old man and the chaste mother, and kneeling down, they adored the child and devotedly threw a cloud of flowers and fragrant wreaths, adorning the threshold, offering him a multitude of rustic gifts in a beautiful competition, and alternating a hymn of joy to the sweet sound of the harps.
