The Venceremos Brigade is an international organization founded in 1969 by members of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and officials of the Republic of Cuba. It was formed as a coalition of young people to show solidarity with the Cuban Revolution by working side by side with Cuban workers, challenging U.S. policies towards Cuba, including the United States embargo against Cuba. Quotes Venceremos Brigade (1971) Sandra Levinson and Carol Brightman, eds., Venceremos Brigade: Young Americans Sharing the Life and Work of Revolutionary Cuba (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1971) Venceremos Brigade shows the extent . . . to which this country’s system of values prevents us from achieving our revolutionary goals. The writings show, for example, how the extreme "individualism" of Americans (even American radicals) interferes with revolutionary potential, how integral a part of the competitive game is "ego-tripping" — or what the Cubans might call egoísmo, selfishness, self-centeredness. Introduction (p. 16) I am all fucked up. Too many problems that I have to deal with. I am amazingly selfish. . . . That’s certainly how we are taught in a capitalist society, and I am a child of capitalism. Even thinking myself crazy is part of my self-indulgence. Frances Holt (pp. 126–127) I can fight the system because I truly hate it. I hate how it has warped the people of our country. How it tries to warp me and everyone it can. Tarnel Abbott (p. 288) Amerika does a lot of ugly things to people. It puts walls between them. Peter Constanza (p. 373) I'm beginning to understand how very thin is the line between neurosis and oppression, and consequently how in the most profound way the solution to what formerly seemed our most personal problems is deeply political.
