thumb|Franco Baresi in 2012 Franco Baresi (8 May 1960 – 31 July 2026) was an Italian football player and manager. He mainly played as a central defender, and spent his entire 20-year career with Serie A club AC Milan, captaining the club for 15 seasons. Widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time, he was ranked 19th in World Soccer magazine's list of the 100 greatest players of the 20th century. Ascoli meant fatigue, pressure from the crowd, the environment, president Rozzi, everything that revolved around the team. It was already felt when you arrived at the stadium. This was in addition to some very tough opponents on the pitch. We may have snatched stitches, but they were always sweaty. I remember very few downhill games in your area, even with Sacchi's team. From an interview by Gigi Mancini, Stadio Del Duca, intervista a Franco Baresi. "Triste vederlo a pezzi, ora costruite il ritorno in A", ilrestodelcarlino.it, 29 November 2016. No, no. Loro vincevano, e tanto, anche prima di noi. [Replying to those who asked: «Did Juve try to imitate you in the 1990s?»] No, no. They won, and a lot, even before us. Let's say that with the advent of Berlusconi we managed to get to the top levels and we stayed there for a long time. Juve has always been an example to everyone. The qualities he maintains over time are seriousness and continuity in his successes, otherwise he would not have collected 25 championships in his long history. Quoted in C'è Juventus vs Milan. One of the worst pitches I played on was Del Duca di Ascoli. The unity of purpose, between the team and the fans, the great encouragement of all the people of Ascoli, have often made life difficult for us at Milan. Quoted in Stadio Del Duca, intervista a Franco Baresi. "Triste vederlo a pezzi, ora costruite il ritorno in A", ilrestodelcarlino.it, 29 November 2016. Quotes about A Scirea era più elegante. Formidabile. Scirea was more elegant. I don't know if it was, or is, a quality, but I can't think of any rudeness of it. Baresi, on the other hand, has given a beating. But as the defense leads –and sometimes, even the team – no one leads it. Formidable. Gianni Agnelli, from an interview by Roberto Beccantini, Agnelli: "Le mie quattro finali in bianconero", La Stampa, 16 May 1996. B Franco Baresi. Franco Baresi. The symbol of the great Milan. The Milan of his Emittance and Intensity. Roberto Beccantini, Per essere Franco, beckisback.it, 31 July 2026. Despite the air of an altar boy, at least as a boy, always and forever faithful to the Devil. Roberto Beccantini, Per essere Franco, beckisback.it, 31 July 2026. A leader. Of few words, of many deeds. Beam, not straw, at the center of a quartet that has become iconic: Tassotti-Costacurta-Baresi-Maldini. He is missing the Ballon d'Or, held hostage by the Dutch who decorated his locks and decorated his tackles. Roberto Beccantini, Per essere Franco, beckisback.it, 31 July 2026. I deserved the success, like Franco Baresi who made his billions playing as a great defender. Silvio Berlusconi, «Così voglio governare l'Italia», La Stampa, 7 April 1994, p. 3. Baresi II is endowed with a unique style, overbearing, imperious, sometimes ruthless. He throws himself on the balloon like a beast: and if by a damned chance he does not catch it, save the good Lord who is in possession of it! He comes out after an advance posing as moves of virile gladiatorial beauty. He breaks away well, commands better as a playmaker: he advances in a sequence of strides no less pleasant than energetic: even if he had a goal stick, it would be the best ever seen on clay with the Brazilian Mauro, free hitter for Santos and the 1962 Brazilian national team (Bicampeao do mundo em Cile). Open to everything and everyone who came, but it was his example that was important, that is the fundamental thing. [...] The secret of that Milan was in the example given by the players who had won so much and were not satisfied. And Franco was unique. He had the pride of playing for this shirt, for the fans, as captain he conveyed these feelings. If it happened that the team fell asleep a little, it would shake things up. He never wanted to lose, that was the strong feeling that came. Fabio Capello, from an interview by Alessandro Bocci, Capello: "Baresi era unico, diamogli il Pallone d'oro alla memoria. He had great speed, great intuition, tactical intelligence. He possessed an almost unique vision of the game. Defensively he was the best ever of that period, not only because he played for a great Milan, just compared to all the players in the world at that time. Fabio Capello, from an interview by Alessandro Bocci, Capello: "Baresi era unico, diamogli il Pallone d'oro alla memoria. Franco was a great guy. He worked so hard to become what he became, he was the symbol for everyone who came to play for Milan. Seeing how he trained, how he behaved, how he was always present and understanding everything he gave you on and off the pitch was fundamental to the growth of other players. Fabio Capello, from an interview by Alessandro Bocci, Capello: "Baresi era unico, diamogli il Pallone d'oro alla memoria. Raise your arm Franco, and all of Milan will follow you. [...] Arm up and fearless heart over the hurdle to drag the team, always as a free man, role-playing and de facto. Aveva 46 anni, eh. Franco was a real conductor. Perhaps today it is not clear how innovative that way of defending was, because back then the opponents were completely disoriented when our line was raised. The rules were different, all it took was one player over and the offside was booed, there were no today's specifications. In commanding the department, Baresi was of surgical precision, consider that at Albertini's farewell football match [...] he still remembered all the movements by heart and brought up the defence like in the old days. He was 46, huh. Alberico Evani, from an interview by Andrea Schianchi, Evani: "Con Baresi insieme 13 anni, restando rossonero rischiò la carriera. Lui era il Milan", gazzetta.it, 4 August 2026. He gave it his all. Talking to him was talking to a man. The Rossoneri are very strong in attack, but they have not found Baresi's heir. Roberto Rosato, from an interview by Mario Gherarducci, «Il cuore Toro è solo un ricordo e il Milan non ha più la difesa», Corriere della Sera, 3 November 2001, p. 39. Nessuno come e quanto lui. In 1999, at the turn of the Rossoneri century, a poll [...] chose Baresi as the footballer of the 20th century. A decision contested by some. Rivera was actually superior in quality, a world-class champion and Golden Ball winner [...]. And even more complete –for the writer– was Paolo Maldini, who is truly the greatest AC Milan player of all time. But Baresi was the most beloved and there is no discussion about that. No one like and as much as him. Rivera has never been forgiven for his poor performance as a manager [...], Maldini for a certain independence of judgment [...]. Baresi, however, agreed with everyone: supporters of the stands and ultras, teammates and opponents, journalists, and President Berlusconi, who still considers him a sixth child, something special and even different from the other players. A love that Kaiser Franz certainly deserved for his loyalty and the high performance he ensured over time. After that debut season, seasoned with the Rossoneri star, he stayed to fight and fight in the purgatory of Serie B, without ever retreating one step. He did it twice: after the Totoscommesse scandal and after a final and dramatic day of the championship in Cesena, 1982. Milan sank into the darkest period in its history, the future seemed to no longer exist and no one could imagine the triumphs that would come within a few years. But Baresi did not run away and this earned him an inalienable place in the hearts of the Casciavit public. Matteo Marani, Auguri Baresi, la bandiera più amata dai milanisti, sport.sky.it, 8 May 2020. Baresi was the best interpreter of the new course [...] which materialized [...] with the landing of Arrigo Sacchi in Milanello. Malicious people tell of when the local prophet advised the increasingly popular libero of AC Milan and the national team to watch Parma's videotapes to understand Signorini's movements. Truth or legend, Baresi has become the cornerstone, the last bastion, the first guarantee of the most beautiful Milan of all time. Matteo Marani, Auguri Baresi, la bandiera più amata dai milanisti, sport.sky.it, 8 May 2020. They scolded him for raising his hand on offside, he actually lifted the cups more often. Matteo Marani, Auguri Baresi, la bandiera più amata dai milanisti, sport.sky.it, 8 May 2020. T Ho sempre studiato gli italiani. Franco Baresi, da cui tutto è cominciato. I have always studied Italians. Franco Baresi, from whom it all began. John Terry, as quoted in Daniele Triolo, Terry: "Maldini, mio mito assoluto. [After the 1994 FIFA World Cup final] There was no happy ending, but the heart-rending, heart-rending crying of Franco Baresi, the ice captain, the tough guy among the tough guys, a guy so tough he plays like a giant, twenty days after his meniscus surgery, the first and last World Cup final of his life. The teammates blindly obeyed his authority and the rivals showed the clever rules of football open to the page that talks about offside. «I'm a liberated free man» Baresi told France Football. True. Real Madrid players say that rivals Milan were not looking at them or the ball: they were only looking at Baresi. That's how you respect a real boss. They still say that «with every offside he caused, he would smile».
