Fabian Fucan (不干斎|, Fukansai, c. 1565–1621) was a Japanese writer who, in his youth, converted from Zen Buddhism to Christianity and back. He wrote tracts at first advocating and later criticizing Christianity in comparison to the other religions of Japan.
Quotes
They (the padres) are always telling people to be humble because pride is the root of all evil and humility the foundation of all good; but, even the King of devils cannot match their own pride, be it their national propensity, or whatever. Because of this pride, secular folk better steer clear when they struggle for power and quarrel with other bateren (padres) . . . and because they are such arrogant men, they don't even think Japanese human.
Fabian's Ha Daiusu (破提宇子, "Refutation of Deus", 1620), as quoted in Topsy-turvy 1585 by Robin D. Gill (Paraverse Press, 2004), p. 268
