thumb|God and nature have joined England and Ireland together. It is impossible to separate them. John Scott, 1st Earl of Clonmell PC (Ire) KC SL (8 June 1739 – 23 May 1798), known as The Lord Earlsfort between 1784 and 1789 and as The Viscount Clonmell between 1789 and 1793, was an Irish barrister and judge. Sometimes known as "Copperfaced Jack", he was Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench for Ireland from 1784 to 1798. Quotes God and nature have joined England and Ireland together. It is impossible to separate them, and if bands of ruffians started up in every part, they could not hold the dominion of murder for a month. I have seen with pain, that this phrenzy has got among the people of Ireland, and if it be a phrenzy, prisons are their safest mad-houses. Judgment in the Case of Andrew Glennan and others for a Conspiracy (3 March 1796), 26 How. St. Tr. 460. Printed in Cobbett's, vol. 26 (London, 1819) p. 460. Quoted in J. W.
