Margaret Halsey (February 13, 1910 – February 4, 1997) was an American writer who lived in the United Kingdom for a short time. Her first book With Malice Toward Some (1938) grew out of her experiences there. It was a witty and humorous bestseller, selling 600,000 copies. Quotes Americans (I, I’m afraid, among them) go around carelessly assuming they’re tolerant the way they go around carelessly saying, "You ought to be in pictures." Some of My Best Friends Are Soldiers: A Kind of Novel (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1944) p. 94 The people who say you are not facing reality actually mean that you are not facing their idea of reality. No Laughing Matter: The Autobiography of a WASP (Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co, 1977) ch. 5, p. 132 With Malice Toward Some (1938) New York: Simon and Schuster Whenever I dwell for any length of time on my own shortcomings, they gradually begin to seem mild, harmless, rather engaging little things, not at all like the staring defects in other people's characters. pt. 1, p. 35 Living in England, provincial England, must be like being married to a stupid, but exquisitely beautiful wife. pt. 3, p. 170 Living in England is curing me with almost alarming rapidity of being shy. Even with the Olympians, there is no need to worry about appearing stupid, because it takes a great deal to produce ennui in an Englishman and if you do, he only takes it as convincing proof that you are well-bred. pt. 3, p. 197 External links Category:1910 births Category:1997 deaths Category:Novelists from the United States Category:Women authors from the United States Category:National Book Award winners Category:Women born in the 1910s
