The 1972–1975 Wollo famine was a major famine in the Ethiopian Empire during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie.

Official sources in Addis Ababa, said that the students were shot by the police in demonstration following the refusal of the acting governor general, Sololeman Abraham, to meet with them to discuss the famine. According to the official sources at least six were killed immediately, others were put to death later and an unknown number were wounded.
The Ethiopian Government says that for months it was kept in ignorance of the gravity of drought and famine in a remote northern province, and it has ordered an inquiry into the disaster.
