Chance
Shadow was loyal, Shadow was faithful...Shadow was a chump.
[His stomach starts to growl] I...I need some grass. [vomits]
I learned an important lesson that day: cake and polyester don't mix.
[riding with his head out the car window] Da Daaaa Bat Dog!
[starts chasing chickens] Hallelujah, I've died and gone to Kentucky!
You won't make it out there on the road! That's where they catch you and take you to the pound!
Shadow, help!!! [Shadow: ?]
[Chance has just gotten attacked by a porcupine] Aah! Aah! He bit me with his butt!
[at the vet, having porcupine quills removed] Okay, okay, I'll talk! I left a gift on the carpet. I let Sassy take the heat for when I unrolled the toilet paper all over the house. I stole underwear on three occasions. [the vet yanks a quill out of his face] Okay, okay, four! Four!
I'm too pooped to poop.
[sees a real live turkey for a second time] Oh! Birdzilla returns!
[Finale and latest words] Turkey! Turkey, turkey, turkey, turkey!
Shadow
Leave it alone, Chance.
[to Chance; gets muffled] Hey! I'll... [muffled]
Sassy
Like my mother always said, curiosity killed the dog.
Shadow, wait! It's too far. You don't know the way. What if they come back here looking for us?
When we get home, the tallest thing I want to climb is a bookshelf.
[The log she's on collapses, sending her into the water] Ah! And I just got this coat cleaned!
Dialogue
[Chance is chewing on an old boot]
Sassy: Do you have any idea where that's been?
Chance: Yeahhh. That's why I like it. You want some?
Sassy: I'm not really into leather.
[Chance has just used the see-saw to launch Sassy into the sandbox]
Hope: My poor baby! [picks her up] Are you all right?!
Sassy: He threw me in the big litter box!
Peter: [laughs] Nice shot, Chance!
Chance: [to Shadow] That's why they call it the "cat"-apult.
Shadow: You've got a lot to learn, pup.
Chance: Locked in. I hate being locked in. This is just like it was back at the pound.
Sassy: Chance, calm down.
Chance: You don't get it, do ya? The pound is where humans lock you up when they don't want you anymore.
Sassy: Not want me? Impossible.
Shadow: Don't listen to him. He's just makin' it up to scare you.
Chance: Oh, yeah? You two pampered pets haven't been out on the streets like I have. I've been to the pound, remember? Don't tell me there's no pound. I know about the pound.
Shadow: Something doesn't smell right. They've been gone way too long. Much longer than they should've been. Something's really wrong.
Chance: Wake up and smell the kibble. They dumped us.
Shadow: No! It isn't true!
Chance: They love you, and they dump you.
Shadow: Not Peter!
Sassy: You could be right, Shadow. It's... It's been too much time, way too much time.
Shadow: Something is keeping Peter from coming to me, so I'm gonna go to him.
Chance: You guys kill me. She locked the gate, remember?
Shadow: I don't care about gates. I'm going home.
Shadow: Home is just over that mountain. We'll be there before dark.
Sassy: How do you figure? It took us ages to get this far.
Shadow: That was the long way. We'll take the shortcut, straight up and over.
Chance: Hey! Wait up! Hey, guys, wait up!
Shadow: I thought you were gonna stay, pup.
Chance: Yeah, but I thought I should come along, in case you two needed protection.
Sassy: My hero! Guess I'm gonna have to stare at YOUR butt the whole way.
Sassy: You just woke me up from a very deep catnap.
Chance: What's the matter, Sassy? Get up on the wrong side of the litter box?
Sassy: Even a great beauty needs her beauty sleep!
Chance: Beauty sleep? You'd have to sleep for, like, a month!
Shadow: Up and at 'em, you two. I found our breakfast.
Chance: Great, I hope it's garbage.
Shadow: Nope, even better.
Sassy: With you two gourmets, I can just imagine.
Chance: Fine, just stay here and diet.
Sassy: Are you calling me fat?
Chance: Of course not, for a hippopotamus- [runs into a small tree] I meant to do that.
Sassy: Ha-ha, serves you right.
Sassy: It's like I said all along, poopsie: cats rule and dogs drool.
Chance: Oh, get a life. Get nine of 'em.
Sassy: But it's true. Cats are smarter than dogs, and more attractive...and we don't drink from the toilet!
[Chance chased the rabbit, but it ran into the hole]
Shadow: There goes the bunny...There goes the pup...There goes breakfast.
Chance: I hate fast food.
Chance: Remember hot dogs?
Shadow: Yeah, I wasn't much for the name, though.
Chance: I don't think they're really made of dog.
Shadow: I don't think they're made of meat!
Chance: But they taste the best when they fall in the dirt.
Shadow: Yeaaaah.
[Running from the puma]
Chance: I'm such a wimp! I'm running from a cat!
Shadow: I won't tell if you won't.
Chance: Of course, this isn't your ordinary housecat. I mean, this is like Arnold Schwarze-kitty!
[Running from the puma]
Chance: Listen, if I don't make it...well, I got a pile of bones buried in the backyard, and, uh...
Shadow: We'll make it!
[They end up on a ledge overlooking a river]
Chance: Aah, I knew it! We're trapped, we're goners! Look, the bones are buried next to the jungle gym, and the TV remote control is under the seesaw.
Shadow: [noticing a long rock balanced on a smaller one] Seesaw...Seesaw! Chance, you're a genius!
Chance: [offended] I am not! What's a genius?
Shadow: Never mind. This is gonna take teamwork.
[A porcupine walks by]
Chance: Whoa. Hey, check it out, intruder at 4 o'clock.
Sassy: What is that?
Chance: You got me. I think it's a squirrel having a really bad hair day. [starts to follow it] Whoa, hey...
Shadow: Leave it alone, Chance.
Chance: Are you kidding me? I gotta check this out! [to the porcupine] Hey, you, pal!
Shadow: No, don't! It doesn't smell right.
Chance: Would you look at this guy? This is, like, mondo bizarro! [circles it] All right, pal, you know the routine: assume the position, I sniff you, you sniff me... [the porcupine tries to leave, but he keeps pestering it] Hey. Hey. Hey, where you going? Hey, did I say you could go? Come back here! Hey, what about that hair? What, did you stick your tongue in a toaster? [he gets too close, and the porcupine smacks him with its tail, leaving quills in his face, making him yelp and scream] HE BIT ME WITH HIS BUTT! [whimpers in pain]
Shadow: Oh, Chance, you really are a bulldog, aren't you?
Chance: [sobbing] I was just curious!
Sassy: Like my mother always said, curiosity killed the dog.
Sassy: [finds Shadow in his cage in the animal shelter] So, big fella, what're ya in for?
Shadow: Sassy? Sassy!
Sassy: Shh, keep it down.
Shadow: I thought I told you to run away.
Sassy: I never listen to dogs.
Fat Guy: Here, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty.
Sassy: [mimicking] "Here, kitty, kitty, kitty." Not on your life, chubby.
Fat Guy: Here, kitty, kitty. Here, kitty. SCAT! Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.
Sassy: No, dummy, dummy, dummy, dummy.
Fat Guy: [goes back inside] Dumb...cat!
Sassy: Oh, what a bozo.
Chance: Look, you pushed me this far, now I'm pushing you the rest of the way! Y'know, back there in the woods, even when things looked really bad, I'd always believe we'd make it because I always thought you were too stubborn to quit. Well, you're not going to quit. Not now, not when we're this close! Now try again!
Shadow: Do you think it's easy for me to admit I can't do it? I'm too old.
Chance: That's not true! There's nothing you can't do!
Shadow: I have nothing left to give, Chance. And it's time for you to be on your own.
Chance: But I want you with me... I love you, Shadow.
Shadow: You've learned everything you need, Chance. Now all you need to learn is how to say goodbye.
