Quotes
To explore does not mean to be the first to reach a place: it means to get there, to return, and to tell someone about it so that they can follow the same route.
Quoted in in Mezzo millennio di Cristoforo Colombo dall'America a Genova, La Stampa, 4 March 1985.
[On the 1956 invasion of Hungary] We were certain that there were hundreds of Soviet aircraft loaded with troops in Hungary, an hour's flight from Trieste and two hours from Milan.
Quoted in Nel '56 rischio di invasione, La Stampa, 13 December 1990.
My [Christian Democrat] friends believed that, by balancing between the right and the left, the DC would consolidate its dominance at the centre of the electorate. Instead, there was an unusual exodus of young people to the left and older people to the right , which dragged the centre into a void. The 'opposing extremisms' strategy was supposed to be the cornerstone of the Christian Democrats' electoral strength, but instead it was the bacteria that corroded the party: it prolonged the 'Years of Lead', wore down the institutions, and destroyed the DC.

Interviews
Paolo Emilio Taviani, Fu padrone assoluto dell'Atlantico Dagli indizi di una sponda lontana alla scoperta del continente, La Stampa, 4 March 1985
From the age of thirty-four to forty-two: the best years in a man's life, in terms of productivity and the effectiveness in action. For the man born in Genoa, these years seem to have been wasted in a series of hopes, expectations, illusions and disappointments.
[About Christopher Columbus] He felt like he ruled the ocean.
[About Christopher Columbus] The darkness parted before his sharp, penetrating gaze, and before his exceptionally keen sense of smell and hearing.
By the time he settled in Portugal, Columbus was already dreaming of a great idea. In Porto Santo and Madeira, he gathered clues and signs from which he could deduce that the Atlantic did not plunge into an abyss at all, but rather lapped against other lands to the west.
"È un omaggio alla Resistenza ma non voglio imbalsamarmi", La Stampa, 3 June 1991
[On my appointment as a life senator] It was an honour for Liguria and for Genoa: above all, it was a tribute to the Resistance, in keeping with the spirit of the Risorgimento.
[On my appointment as a life senator] I am honoured by this appointment, but I see only one small risk: becoming distanced from my constituents.
[On the First and Second Republics] I don't want the First Republic to be consigned to history, not even as a joke.
At most, we can talk about making adjustments to the second part of the Constitution. Rauti has not grasped the fact that, as Home Secretary, I dissolved Ordine Nuovo and Anno Zero.

At that time, it was war – war against those who had wanted war, against those who deserved nothing but war.
Today, there is peace – peace desired by a people who have helped to win it, a people who are asking for work and peace of mind.
No more killings out of personal hatred; no more revenge! Justice has already been delivered through the People's Tribunals, and it will continue to be delivered through the Special Assize Courts.
The partisan army was supposed to be a single force. Plurality of parties. Plurality in youth and women's movements. Ideological and operational autonomy for the parties. However, in the mountains, the army had to be—and could only be—unified.
Justice must be administered by the people, that is, by the body made up of representatives of the people.
Justice must not be administered by an armed individual acting according to their own one-sided point of view.

Although I did get Capo Marrangiu to teach me how to use the model.

It's not that Taviani was a man of reflection. Rather, he was a pragmatic man.
Ciriaco de Mita, quoted in Amedeo La Mattina, "Taviani sbagliava mai con i socialisti", La Stampa'', 28 June 2001.
