Daughter of Earth and Water (1973)
New York: William Morrow & Co.
Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was destined from her birth, on August 30, 1797, to be different, out of step in both thoughts and feelings with ordinary minds and mundane emotions. The very nature of her unorthodox, controversial parents guaranteed that the child of their union would be dissimilar to anyone else who came into the world at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Ch. 1 (p. 1)
Marriage was a noble institution, she declared, provided the husband did not take unfair advantage of his superior legal position and the wife did not succumb to the pressures of society and become a nonentity.
Ch. 1 (pp. 4–5)
Seeing some of the most famous men of the day when they were relaxing over a jar of sack, a bottle of port or an occasional glass of whiskey also gave her an opportunity to observe their idiosyncrasies, and confirmed her belief that only the timid, the insecure and the ignorant conformed to the rules that society made.
Ch. 2 (p. 18)

But she soon learned that woods and mountains were made for hiking, and thereafter she rarely took a book with her on her daily excursions into the outdoors.

He clapped a hand over her mouth. She bit him hard, sinking her teeth into the heel of his hand. Scarcely aware of the pain, Tracy grasped her throat with his free hand, his strong fingers cutting off her supply of air. . . . Bessie struggled furiously, trying to kick him in the groin, her hands clawing frantically at his face, but he held her at arm's length. When he felt her beginning to sag, his other hand moved from her mouth to her throat. Feeling no pity, no compassion for this young woman with whom he had made love only a short time earlier, he squeezed her throat until her life ebbed from her body.
