George Wilson Kanyeihamba (11 August 1939 – 14 July 2025) was a Ugandan author, politician, and judge who was a cabinet minister and member of parliament. He was also a chair of the Legal Committee of the Constituent Assembly that made the 1995 Constitution. He was appointed a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda in 1997 and retired in November 2009. He had earlier served as minister of commerce, minister of justice, and attorney-general, all in President Yoweri Museveni's administration. He held a Ph.D. in law from the University of Warwick. In 2008, Warwick awarded him an honorary LLD. Quotes If we reflected on the role that law plays in our lives, both private and social, we shall realize that without law, organized society would be impossible … From the moment of birth to the moment of death, our lives are regulated by law … between two legal documents—the birth and death certificates … In all these cases, it is the law that will determine his or her rights and duties. But law does not begin at birth, nor does it end at death. It safeguards the unborn. It respects the dead. It regulates eternity in both directions. No one can live a full life alone, as a hermit in a desert,” he reminded us. “And no one can live outside the reach of law, for even solitude is subject to the law of silence. The principles that govern law should be that the interests of the client must count more than any other consideration within the law—except the lawyer’s own integrity. Keep learning. It is only the fool who says: the less I know, the more I understand. When a country reaches a stage where only the bad people, or those who condone or ignore wrongdoers, are the ones who speak and prosper and the good people are silent, that country becomes a failed state”. It is the same when the country’s elite fear to give advice or are afraid to discuss publicly or sharing opinions about what is right or wrong in their society and then surrender their acumen and allow the uninitiated and poor thinkers to do the thinking for the country. That country is doomed. The media should not be intimidated. Whenever people threaten you, it means you are doing a good job exposing their weaknesses and ferocity. You cannot be a good lawyer if you do not understand the people you serve. External links Category:Authors from Uganda Category:1939 births Category:2025 deaths
