thumb|Hines in 1936 Earl Hines Earl Kenneth Hines, also known as Earl "Fatha" Hines (December 28, 1903 – April 22, 1983), was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one critic, "one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz". Quotes about Earl Hines A few years ago a correspondent to [BBC] Radio 3's Jazz Record Requests described Earl Hines as "underplayed, largely unavailable and probably underestimated". It's a fair summary of a situation that, in the 1930s, would have been unthinkable. [Back then], Hines was riding high, the king of the keyboard, a byword for invention, technique, daring and dazzlement – the man who turned piano playing into a kind of Olympic event, inspiring a whole generation.
