Pedro Calungsod (Pedro Calúñgsod or archaically Pedro Calonsor; July 21, 1654 – April 2, 1672), also known as Peter Calungsod and Pedro Calonsor, was a Catholic Filipino-Visayan migrant, sacristan and missionary catechist who, along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores, proselytized and converted the indigenous people of Guam, in some cases without consent, which led to both missionaries being martyred in 1672.
Quotes about
In 1668, together with other young catechists, he accompanied Father. Diego Luis de San Vitores in the Marianas Islands to evangelize the Chamorro people. Life there was hard and the missionaries suffered persecution because of envy and slander. Pedro, however, showed deep faith and charity and continued to catechize the many converts, bearing witness to Christ through a life of purity and dedication to the Gospel. His desire to gain souls for Christ was very intense, and this made him resolute in accepting martyrdom.
