Sonic Adventure 2 is a 2001 video game for the Sega Dreamcast, ported to the GameCube in 2002. It is a sequel to Sonic Adventure. It was later released as a downloadable game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows in October 2012. Hero Side Sonic the Hedgehog (whistle) That was cool! (A Rank) Too easy. Piece of cake. (B Rank) Just made it. (C Rank) Huh. No problem (D Rank) Barely made it. (E Rank) Talk about low-budget flights. No food or movies? I’m out of here! I like running better. Huh? Not again. Eggman! Oh, that creep never gives up! I got it. Before the cannon fires, I'll slam dunk it in there! Chaos Control! Hey wait, someone is coming. I've gotta get outta here, and find Amy and Tails right away! [With that, he takes off to dash through Green Forest and escape from Prison Island before it explodes. He only has 8 minutes to escape, however.] Created the Ultimate Life Form... [softly] Handing over the fake Emerald, I can kill two birds with one stone. [softly] Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog... Don't worry, buddy. You can't get away this time! There's only one real Sonic! Alright, Shadow. Time for me to finish this! Miles "Tails" Prower I did it, Sonic! (A Rank) Very good! (B Rank) That was easy. (C Rank) That was a little tough. (D Rank) I got to do better next time. (E Rank) Everything will be okay. Cyclone engaged! Recharged... Fire laser! Fire rocket launcher! Tornado Transformation! Eggman, you won't get away with this! Sonic! Oh, no! I lost him! My power's failing! My machine has reached its limit! Sonic... This place is huge. Hmm... Which place should I go? I've got to find Sonic. He's in jail. I've got to lose them. There must be a place to hide. I hate earthquakes. Can I break this? There must be a way to get in there. It's getting hard to breathe in here. I got to find the power supply and destroy it. Knuckles the Echidna Yeah, this is perfect! (A Rank) Yeah, I feel good. (B Rank) Not too bad. (C Rank) Phew! That was tough. (D Rank) I have to try harder. (E Rank) Look who's calling who a thief. Not if I can help it! I found them! I can't! It's over. Now there. I'm sorry, if I hurt you. It's over... Dark Side Shadow the Hedgehog Ultimate victory! (A Rank) Hmm, too easy for me! (B Rank) That wasn't so hard. (C Rank) Maybe I didn't try hard enough. (D Rank) I guess I'm not at full power here. (E Rank) Chaos Control! It all starts with this… A jewel containing the ultimate power… My name is Shadow. I’m the world’s ultimate lifeform. There’s no time for games. Farewell! My name is Shadow. Since you were so kind to release me, my master… I will grant you one wish. Behold the true power I possess! That blue hedgehog again, of all places… There's no time to play games. You won't even get the chance! Faker? I think you're the fake hedgehog around here. You're comparing yourself to me… ha! You're not even good enough to be my fake. So, there's more to you than just looking like me. What are you anyway? I see. But you know, I can't let you live. Your adventuring days are coming to an end. Before this is over, I'll show you the true power of CHAOS CONTROL!! Dr. Eggman/Robotnik Now you know why I am the best! (A Rank) (laughing) Piece of cake! (B Rank) Hmm, that wasn't so difficult. (C Rank) I should have tried a little harder. (D Rank) That was too close. (E Rank) Hah, hah, hah! Citizens of Earth, lend me your ears and listen to me very carefully! My name is Dr. Eggman, the world's greatest scientist, and soon to be the world's greatest ruler! Now, witness the beginning of the greatest empire of all time! What's that? Is that you, Sonic? Are you trying to spoil my plans again? Wait a minute, you're not Sonic. This is impossible! So this is the space colony ARK. I have got to locate the central control room that Shadow mentioned before he left. I came here following the signal from the Emerald… If I'm not mistaken, this is the Master Emerald, is it not? Well, I guess I can use it for something. I'll just take it with me. Farewell knucklehead! Those idiots will never find my hidden base inside this pyramid. Let's take care of business here first, then get inside. Sounds more like the work of Shadow! This time I'll let you go. But the next time we meet, you won't be so lucky. You thought you could trick me with that fake emerald, didn't you? Because you just told me, fox boy! Better luck next time, fox boy! Do you think that pile of junk is going to stop me? No matter what you do, it's mine. How irritating, nothing but wimps. My machines hate this end. I've got to get out of here. Now I've got to start over from the base. Could this be the place my grandfather wrote of? I though the central control room is this way. Those fools are no match for me. Let's see if I can have some fun now. Ugh. I'm really getting tired of operating this machine. Boy, this walker design is perfectly suited for space. Sonic, this time I can't lose. You! I'll make you pay for this! Oh no! My power is going down! Is this it? Rouge the Bat How was that? Perfect? Like me? (A Rank) It's all too easy for me! (B Rank) Not too bad, I guess. (C Rank) I guess I took a little too much time! (D Rank) I'm ashamed to call myself a hunter! (E Rank) Just let it go! You just don't know when to give up, do you? I can't! I thought I could do it! So cute! I got it! What was that all about? And look what you did to my Emerald! 5 minutes should be plenty, here I go! Amy Rose Look, half of the moon is gone?? What's the matter, Sonic? Just wait a minute! Oooh, I hate it when they leave me behind. I hate you! You guys always leave me behind and have all the FUN! (voice echoes) Maria Robotnik Shadow, I beg of you, please, do it for me. For all the people on that planet. Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog. Gerald Robotnik This is a death sentence for every human being on Earth. If my calculations are correct, the Space Colony ARK will impact the Earth in 27 minutes and 53 seconds. All of you will be destroyed, along with your beloved planet Earth. I plan to give you a taste of my revenge, once all the seven Chaos Emeralds are collected. Once I initiate this program, it cannot be disabled. All of you ungrateful humans who took everything away from me, will feel my loss, and despair! Omochao [while being picked up] Hey! Stop it! [Sigh] I was so scared. What hint? It's too high here. I'm scared of heights! Wow! I'm flying! Whoo-hoo! It's like a trampoline! Phew. I was a little scared. Whew, that big truck scared me. All I can see is water. Where is my home? I got to get out of here before the island blows up. Wow, that was scary. I'm going home to watch TV. Hmm, this looks like a game I've seen before. I'll find my own way home. Bye-bye. I feel dizzy. This fog reminds me of San Francisco. Wow, it's getting late. I gotta go to kindergarten. I'll use my propeller to fly in space. Why is that? I've never been here before. I'm going sightseeing. Dialogue Rouge: Just... let it go! You just don’t know what to give up, do you? Knuckles: What are you talking about? That Emerald is mine! You got that? The Master Emerald contains special powers that neutralize the Chaos Emeralds. That makes it very powerful... What the!? Rouge: Wha... Thief! Knuckles: Look who's calling who a thief. [The thief turns out to be none other than Eggman, who has come to steal the Master Emerald just like he did in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.] Eggman: I came here following the signal from the Emerald. If I'm not mistaken, this is the Master Emerald, is it not? Knuckles: It's you, Dr. Eggman! Rouge: So, that's Dr. Eggman. Eggman: Well, I guess I can use it for something. I'll just take it with me. [He prepares to leave with the Master Emerald, taunting Knuckles in the process.] Farewell, Knucklehead! Knuckles: Not if I can help it! [He launches himself after Eggman and shatters the Master Emerald to prevent the mad scientist from stealing it.] Eggman: What?! [Rouge is horrified at what she just saw and angrily grabs Knuckles by the shoulders and shakes him violently.] Rouge: What was that all about?! And look what you did to my Emerald! Knuckles: I did that to prevent the Master Emerald from being stolen, you idiot! If it's in pieces, I can restore it. And by the way, that's not your Emerald. Eggman: [to himself as he leaves] Doesn't matter. I'll look into it once I get back to the base. [Rouge watches Eggman leave, then turns back to Knuckles, still fuming about what he did to the Master Emerald.] Rouge: I despise anyone who takes jewels from me! All the world's gems are mine to keep! Knuckles: Yeah, we'll see about that, Bat Girl! [With that, Knuckles and Rouge begin their respective quests to search for the Master Emerald Shards to restore the Master Emerald. Knuckles travels to Wild Canyon while Rouge heads for Dry Lagoon.] Sonic: Hey, that's.... Shadow: That blue hedgehog again of all places... Sonic: I've found you, faker! Shadow: Faker? I think you're the fake hedgehog around here. You're comparing yourself to me? Ha! You're not even good enough to be my fake! Sonic: I'll make you eat those words! [The battle between Sonic and Shadow begins.] Eggman: Shadow, what are you doing? Hurry and get back here right now before the island blows up with you on it! Sonic: Blows up!? [Shadow, after hearing this, leaves Green Forest and begins to escape from Prison Island before the Eggman Bomboms detonate and destroy the whole island, leaving the Blue Blur to plan his own escape from the island.] Last Story Eggman: [After seeing that his attempt to kill Sonic has failed] You're pretty persistent for a hedgehog aren't you? Still alive, huh? Sonic: Hah! Just letting Knuckles pilot the shuttle on the way over here was more dangerous than you could ever be! Rouge: [while Sonic and Shadow are fighting the Final Hazard] Can you hear me? Sonic, Shadow!? Everyone here is rooting for you! Good luck and give him trouble! Sonic: [whispers] Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog... Quotes about Sonic Adventure 2 The soundtrack is definitive. Pop culture pundits will tell you that the quintessential piece of video game music is the theme to 1985’s Super Mario Bros. To ’80s kids, that’s probably still the case. But to a generation of gamers who came of age in the late ’90s and early ’00s—especially those who were reared on primordial, “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”-esque meme culture— Sonic Adventure 2‘s “Escape from the City” is an epochal anthem. It’s a song cherished by so many that some have even fought to have it replace the Star-Spangled Banner as the United States’ national anthem. Morgan Troper of Vice News (August 6, 2017) I’d heard time and time again that Adventure 2 was Sonic’s magnum opus. [...] But it hasn’t aged well. Hell, I don’t even know if it was considered good at the time. Reading about frustrations I had on old forums, I found people from two decades ago moaning about the same things, but the slither of good seems to have washed away the rest as time marched on. [...] The speedster levels are incredible, and easily some of the best 3D platforming out there. But that only makes up a third of the game. The rest is split between frustrating treasure hunting, in which you follow a janky detector in wide-open levels that take an age to complete, and a clumsy tank shooter that, when it tries to sprinkle in platforming, falls at the first hurdle. [...] [Playing as] the other characters [is a grating chore] that you have to push through to get to the good stuff, which is a strong way to sour the entire experience considering they make up two-thirds of it. [...] Many boss fights are just the equivalent character from the opposite story, i.e. Shadow vs. Sonic, which is pretty dull since you can just spam leap on their head to win most fights. James Troughton of TheGamer (May 15, 2024) Developers simply don’t make games like Sonic Adventure 2 anymore. It’s a totally innocent, bubbly game that doesn’t bother with a complicated plot or clever scriptwriting. The dialogue is as eye-rollingly cheesy as ever, but it wouldn’t work any other way, and it just wants to you to sit back and have a ball playing it. Mike LeChevallier of Slant (magazine) Slant (October 3, 2012) Naturally, no game is without its faults, and SA2 is without exception. The largest problem, as with the original, is the dynamic camera. It often switches to the most awkward positions possible, leading to death at the hands of an out-of-view gap, or a monster hidden under a wall which you didn't see because the camera couldn't catch up to your position in time. The trigger buttons to serve to alleviate this somewhat, with the ability to swing it round to your preference, but sometimes it just doesn't budge at apparently random times. Another niggle which surfaced - albeit extremely rarely - was some slightly dodgy collision detection when attacking monsters and trying to hit speed boost pads whilst running - that is, however, an extremely slight complaint. Sonic Adventure 2 is a triumph. Whilst its predecessor was a fantastic game in its own right, it could be a little overbearing with the "adventure" aspect, and with this Sega have gone back to Sonic's roots in style - buy it now. Martin Taylor of EuroGamer (June 23, 2001) Fifteen years later, and my early, illustrious English education has clearly paid off. At the time of writing this, I am unemployed and addicted to Postmates. I am also about to beat Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time in over a decade, and have been forced to reconcile my nostalgia with the harsh reality that it is not a terrific game: The controls are frustrating, the “treasure-hunting” levels dramatically upset the game’s pace and the Doomsday plot reads like a Bob Books Armageddon. Morgan Troper of Vice News (August 6, 2017, 5:20am) By Odin's left eye, the final boss encounter is truly incredible, especially since you're treated to a awesome animation of Super Sonic... oh and Dragonball Z fans will definitely love the true ending to the game.
