Zakithi Nene (born 2 April 1998) is a South African sprinter, who specializes in the 400 metres. Quotes I am for sure carrying a bit more experience this year. I have now competed against the top guys on the circuit for the past few years and I know what it takes to win at this level. This season has been very tricky. It’s been my best in terms of workload and consistent competing but I just haven’t been running at my best level yet, But every athlete has the Olympics circled on their calendar and basically has a four-year programme. Now it’s just trusting my body and hoping I peak at the right time. It feels like we’ve got a good group of guys on the same wavelength and we’ve now run as a team quite a lot. Three of the team [Isaacs, Nortje and Swart] are competing only in the relay and not in the individual 400m, so they will offer fresh legs when we need them. Sprinter Zakithi Nene aims for Olympic glory in Paris,July 24 2024 I'm grateful for obtaining this award. Its something I never expected even in my wildest dreams. But more than that, the love I got from people is something I appreciate even more. For people to vote for me, it shows they are seeing the work I have been putting in on the track this year. 2024 is going to be a crucial year for me with the Olympics happening. I know many rate this year as one of the best in my career but I see the opposite. I'm yet to be at my best. The important thing is that I compete in Europe against the best athletes and that's how I improve. So I have to appreciate my manager for making that happen. My goal is to reach a standard where I will stand a chance of coming back with something from the Olympics. Great things are coming' - Zakithi Nene named 2023 KZN Sports Personality of the year, November 07 2023 It was well within my means. Right now it’s all about survive and advance – it’s a championship  and I did just enough to advance. With 44.20, hopefully I can a get a decent lane for the final, then we can go for it. I think I have now had a bit more experience leading up to Paris. I’ve competed in a lot of the circuits and ran against most of the guys. It has been a confidence booster. I feel like I’ve established myself as an athlete on the circuits. I have more experience compared to when I went to Tokyo. That was the first time representing my country in an individual event. My biggest competitor will be myself as I have set goals for myself. I am keeping a really cool head right now and focusing on my training and making sure that I’m in the best shape possible.
