thumb |Jane Tranter Jane Tranter CBE (born 17 March 1963) is an English television executive who was the executive vice-president of programming and production at BBC Worldwide's Los Angeles base from 2009 until 2015. From 2006 to 2008, she was the BBC's controller of fiction; in this capacity she oversaw the corporation's output in drama and comedy, as well as films and programmes acquired from overseas, across all BBC TV channels. Critics were concerned that the BBC had invested too much creative power in one person, and following Tranter's move to the United States, the position of controller of fiction was abolished and the responsibilities divided up among four other executives. Quotes "The ruthless answer is do I want to keep reading because my reading pile is huge... Is there a story or character I’m compelled by?" Jane Tranter expains what draws her to a script or story at the BBC Wales Writers Festival in December 2019. "Doing this job is like studying for an exam that you are never prepped for. The workload never ever goes away. I’ve got literally hundreds of scripts, any time of a given month or week." Shares her workload of reading scripts with the Hollywood Reporter. October 15, 2023 "Engage with other women, both younger and older, and stand firm against any negativity. I wish someone had shared this wisdom with me." Jane Tranter's advice to young women entering the industry. October 15, 2023 "Equality and diversity require collective attention and commitment. Those with industry experience should focus on creating opportunities for diverse talent." Jane Tranter's stance on diversity and opportunities in the industry October 15, 2023 "If I can deliver a strong script, compelling characters, and ensure they are well taken care of during their time with us, everything will fall into place." Shares what helps attract talent and achieve quality production. August 9, 2024 “Tell the truth, even if that truth is sometimes unpalatable.” "How do you get your boss to like you? It’s now developed into something more, because it’s earned the right to do that. So I’m really looking forward to the audience getting to see storylines that are opening up more." "I think really what we look for are good stories, well told, with something to say. We tend to really lean into strong female characters, and we look for something that has a moral center, even if sometimes that moral center looks like a cold, dark heart." "I think it’s gut instinct, really. Sometimes, in something like Industry, that was inspired by wanting to look in that world." "There are lots of things in life that happen that we need to address, and we shouldn’t shy away and just think, ‘Okay, well, that’s a bit tough’ or ‘That’s a bit that is very out there,’ but actually it’s all based on stuff that actually happens." Tranter spoke with Deadline about her production company’s philosophy for making TV.
