Definitely, Maybe is a 2008 romantic comedy film about a 30-something Manhattan father named Will Hayes recounts his past romantic life and pre-divorce history to his 10-year-old daughter, Maya, turning his three major relationships into a guessing-game mystery where he changes all the names.
Written and Directed by Adam Brooks.
Dialogue
Will: I had two serious girlfriends. And then some other, a smattering of other women that I dated.
(Notices Maya looking strangely at him)
Will: What?
Maya: What’s the boy word for slut?
Will: They still haven’t come up with one yet, but I’m sure they’re working on it.
Maya: I’m guessing you weren’t her first boyfriend. Maybe it was some nerdy guy, or maybe he was mean. Or maybe you were friends for the longest time, and then just when you were about to put your penis into somebody else’s vagina…
Will: Okay. Good night, Maya.
Maya: …you realized Mom was the only one for you!
Will: Bedtime!
Maya: Hold it! Stop. Stop right there! You smoked?
Will: No! Yeah. But I didn’t mean to tell you that. Listen. I was young, and I was stupid, and I haven’t smoked in years. I promise you.
Maya: Is there anything else you should tell me?
Will: Probably not.
(Maya and Sarah are walking away, Maya turns around)
Maya: Dad!
(Will turns around, Maya runs to him, Will kneels)
Maya: Thanks for telling me the story.
Will: You’re welcome. I forgot to tell you the happy ending.
Maya: (getting tears) What is it?
Will: You.
