Quotes
The Ninth Man (1976)
New York: Doubleday & Co.
She was sitting on the edge of the tub with the phone in her hands when the door splintered open. She looked up at him in terror. . . . He put his hands around her throat and pulled her off the bathtub. He pressed, cutting off her air. "Ray, don't," she said in a choked, indignant voice. Her hands fluttered to his wrists and tried to pull them away. At first she looked merely angry, as though she thought his roughness outrageous. But as his hands continued to grip her throat, squeezing her windpipe, her eyes widened with fear. He kept on choking, forcing her down, down toward the floor. She tried to scream, but no sound came. She kicked and thrashed her legs. A runner leapt up one hose-clad calf. Still he pressed downward. Her eyes rolled up under her lids and her body convulsed in terror. Her knees swept from side to side, knocking against the tub, as he pressed her head beneath the bathroom basin, throttling, pushing, choking. There was a tearing sound as her slip caught on a pipe beneath the sink and split open. Her knees trembled in one last rending convulsion, and at the last moment he cursed her. "Bitch!" he spat. "Whore!" And then she was still.
