Asya Danielle Branch (born May 5, 1998) is an American beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss USA 2020 and represented her country at Miss Universe 2020 where she reached in the top 21. Quotes I was originally born in Detroit, Michigan, and we moved to Mississippi in July of 2003. I started kindergarten in August of 2003 in Mississippi. So it’s definitely home for me, even though both of my parents are from Michigan. And I think I probably had the smoothest transition because I was so young, but my older siblings were accustomed to living in Detroit. I think it was more difficult for them, but I will say that the biggest thing that I admire about being raised in the South is the Southern hospitality. You run into strangers and you treat them as if you’ve known them your whole entire life. I think that’s one quality that I’ve really picked up, and one that stuck me with me. Being crowned Miss Mississippi USA as the first Black woman was really an honor, and even though it was 2019, I think that we were making strides in the right direction. It’s an opportunity for me to serve as an example for young girls who want to accomplish a dream but had never seen anyone that looks like them do it. It’s been an honor and a privilege, but I’m definitely looking forward to the day where we have so much diversity in every area that it’s not such a big deal. I really think that’s just the lack of education and knowledge. People don’t understand that there was once a time before where African American women were not allowed to compete in these competitions, and so we’ve come a very long way to reach a level of equality and representation. I would just inform them on what they may or may not know, and continue being proud of who I am and what I represent. Oh, absolutely. I think that people don’t understand the depth of pageantry. I’ve heard person after person say, “I never realized how much went into preparing for this competition.” And there’s so much more to it than just physical beauty. I mean, it helps you really expand your horizons and develop as an individual, it really helps give you life skills that you can carry through whatever career path you decide to go down. I grew up with this love of makeup and I realized that the foundation needs to be beautiful as well. So that led me to really diving into my skincare because I think it’s important that we embrace our natural beauty. Makeup is wonderful because it helps us to enhance that. I think that we should be comfortable in our own skin, but there are beauty products that make people feel even more comfortable and more beautiful. And I think we should embrace that as well.
