Edwige Fenech (born 24 December 1948) is a French-Italian actress and film producer. She is known as the star of a series of commedia sexy all'italiana and giallo films released predominantly through her 20-year career in the 1970s and 80s, which turned her into a sex symbol. From an interview by Claudio Sabeli Fioreti, «Pentita dei film sexy? If the Lord had wanted to be more generous towards me, he would have introduced me to Ingmar Bergman. And maybe I would never have made those movies. But I can't complain. If I had to go back those movies I would make them again Oggi una donna di volontà riesce a farsi strada. Today a woman of will manages to make her way. But he always has to prove many more things than a man. When a man is with a beautiful woman, he is super-courted because other women compete with the beautiful one. It's very exciting to be able to steal a beautiful woman's man. And men offer themselves as sacrificial victims. After all, people don't want sex, they especially want to be able to tell it. Mai. Appena ho potuto evitare di spogliarmi l'ho fatto. Undressing in front of people I didn't know was terrifying. I have always been a discreet person, even in the way I dress. I've always been minimalist, never walking around low-cut or sheer, never topless. It was never a pleasure walk. Never. As soon as I could avoid undressing I did. From an interview by Candida Morvilo, Edwige Fenech: «Anch’io sono stata molestata, mi salvai tirando ginocchiate. Le docce sexy? Film carini», Corriere.it, 17 May 2023. When at 14 or 15, already as tall as I am now, I am stopped on the street, in Nice, to say a line in a film. It was Toutes folles de lui by Norbert Carbonnaux. I had to say a word I didn't know or understand and they made me take the clapperboard again 32 times: a terrible embarrassment. The word was "maintained": "Do you want to make me your kept woman?" Mom was with me, but she didn't know what it meant either. I thought I would never set foot on a set again. [«Instead, she has made around seventy films as an actress [...] and around thirty as a producer. Why did he change his mind?»] I was a model and, at 18, I won the Lady Francia competition. From there they took me to the final of Lady Europa in Cortina, where I finished second. Again, an officer stopped me to offer me a role, but Mom and I went home. Then, a telegram arrives: contract ready to be signed in Rome, stop. We found ourselves in Cinecittà, a world totally foreign to us, I didn't speak Italian. They told me to sign where the crosses were. The film was Samoa Queen of the Jungle. I just realized I was going to be some kind of Tarzan in a skirt. Every morning, they smeared me with brown cream. In the evening, it took Mom an hour and a half to clean me up. [«It was [...] clear when she decided to have her son Edwin alone»] I was 22, I was pregnant, I wanted that child, but I respect the thought of others and I would never have forced her father to be a father. [«He also had a career in the early days, wasn't he afraid he wouldn't work anymore?»] Of course I am, I am not unconscious. And during that time I had a demonstration of terrible people: a horrible producer who had been putting the film off for two years made up his mind that he wanted to shoot there at the time and sued me for breach of contract. But I was also fortunate enough to meet beautiful people. Producer Luciano Martino, to whom I later became engaged, arrived with a three-film contract that saved my life. It made me feel like a lioness. He also made seven, eight movies a year, was it just for the money?»] I needed to work and I wasn't picky, also because in Algeria there was no distinction between A-movies and B-movies. [...] I don't deny anything: some so-called erotic films were cute, well-made, with very good actors. [«Tell me two»] Titles aside, Giovannona Coscialunga dishonored with honor or That great piece of Ubalda all naked and all hot. In any case, thanks to that apprenticeship I then made four films with Steno, Cattivi pensieri with Ugo Tognazzi, Sono fotogenico by Dino Risi, Il ladrone by Pasquale Festa Campanile and, in the theatre, D'amore si muore, by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi. It's like that for all the actors: no one gets to the brilliant film right away. It's a profession where you always depend on others. [«Is it to be master of her destiny that she becomes a producer in 1999?»] Exactly, but I only acted in the first two films. Afterwards, I preferred to impose other women, because, for me, imposing myself had been difficult. I enjoyed my career as a producer, even though I didn't sleep at night due to worries. I didn't have the doors opening on their own, but I had to head them open. [«A regret?»] Not having done Federico Fellini's Gradisca in Amarcord. He would take me to his cook, Ubalda, for lunch, so he called me Ubaldina, and he would say, Ubaldina, you have to gain weight for the movie. Finally, he took Magali Noël, more mature and curvy than me. But I couldn't gain weight: I was young, I burned everything I ate. [«What did she think when the MeToo broke out?»] That someone was finally reporting. In my day, a girl's word had no value. I was harassed several times by those who had the power to make me work and I didn't report it: who would believe me? However, even in heavy situations where I was at risk of being raped, I managed to escape unscathed: I have a knee reflex that is a killer thing. To today's actresses I recommend aiming with your knee where we know. External links Category:1948 births Category:Living people Category:Actresses from France Category:Film producers from France
