Quotes
I think it’s fair to say that we haven’t put a complete game of cricket together yet this week, and we’re probably still waiting to play our best game.
We really had to scrap around in the end to get to 145 with the bat – I thought Stuart Thompson was outstanding at the end of that innings – but what was more pleasing was the way we kept fighting in the field and the way the bowlers bowled was excellent.
We’ve had some very good batting performances of late, and we’ve spoken about the top 3 or 4 taking responsibility to put up big scores – which for us is really the key to putting big team scores on or chasing down big targets
It’s very much what we feel is required at that time or on a particular day.
I guess we’d like to think we have a good dynamic and it’s a credit to the coaching staff who first of all produced those guys, and then the coaching staff we have here as well.
And credit to the guys themselves as well who have come into the team and want to put their own mark on it – and they’ve been able to do that.
Interview: Captain Gary Wilson speaking after today’s win over Nepal, October 2019,Cricket Ireland by Writer
I made no secret to Cricket Ireland that I was ambitious and this is the job I wanted
Obviously, I'll have my own ideas and the way I want to go about things, and no doubt over a period of time relationships with the guys will change
Being an assistant coach with the guys is very, very different to being the head coach, but at the forefront for me is relationships and communication
I know the landscape of cricket in Ireland. I'm not coming in blind in terms of the facilities we've got, in terms of what player pool we've got, contracts, money and all that.
I'm well versed in that and I like to think that I'm a well-rounded choice, hopefully.
I don't think the players or the staff or Cricket Ireland needed it to prove anything to themselves, but I hope that it gets more people engaged in the sport and more people knowing and understanding what it means to play cricket for Ireland.
