Quotes
The bleached blond (but dark-eyed) look, though normally available to Mediterranean women only by artificial means, was lauded by writers (especially poets) as the ideal feminine type: they eulogized the golden blond hair, the dark eyes, the rosy (rouge-tinted) cheeks, and the ‘ivory-white’ or ‘snow-white’ or ‘milk-white’ faces, arms, necks, breasts and legs of this candida ideal, and mocked the deep ruddy tan of the peasant woman, whose colour betrayed regular exposure to the sun and ignorance of the refinements of the fashionable toilette.
