"The Road To Kingdom" [2.01]
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: 400 years ago, this estate spread out as far as the eye could see. In every direction. All the way down to the coast. It’s been diminished. Year after year. Generation after generation. First came the apologies. Then came the shame. Then came the contraction. It’s like a rot. I want it back, Geoff. I want it all back.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm. Right. These birds aren't gonna kill themselves.
Geoffrey Seacombe: [to Eddie bird shooting] You might want to miss one or two. You're making the Italian look bad.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Do we have a problem with that, Geoffrey?
Geoffrey Seacombe: I don't, but I think his ego does.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Oh. Well, we might have to lie on the count, Geoff.
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: [to Sabrina bird shooting] You've got to at least try and hit one, mother.
Sabrina Horniman: Darling, you know, you've become very bloodthirsty since you left university.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: He’s edgy, Susan. It’s concerning me. So, what is the issue with Cico?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Yet to be determined. I’m sure it’s nothing positive. I know you’re not his number one fan, Eddie, but he has helped us get a foothold in Italy, a territory beset by monsters around every corner. His efforts shouldn’t be underestimated.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Fixers are supposed to fix problems, not create them.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I say we give him the benefit of the doubt for the time being. Meanwhile, you can focus your efforts on snagging yourself a peerage, as per my father’s request.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You leave Lord Hawthorne to me. [helicopter approaches]
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hope we haven’t got too many plates spinning today.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No. Shoots are never about the killing, Susan. They’re about the deal-making. It’s an alibi to fuse a collection of disparate rogues. Contrary to logic, the more spinning plates, the better. People will fly 5,000 miles for a shoot in the English countryside, and for some strange reason, are more open to business when they’ve got a gun in their hand.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [Aisha approaches] Tell me more about your friend.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You’ll like Aisha. Clever girl. Aspirational. Looks after herself and everyone who comes within her orbit. She moved to the Middle East five years ago to work in hospitality. Now she’s snagged herself a seat at the royal table.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: The Middle East is the future, Susie. They build a new world out there every two weeks.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Amir, we must get you a gun.
Prince Amir bin Abdullah al-Hadidi: [in gun armory] Why are there so many? A... And why only two barrels?
Geoffrey Seacombe: Give the birds a sporting chance, sir.
Prince Amir bin Abdullah al-Hadidi: Which one is the best?
Geoffrey Seacombe: The best? Or the most impressive?
Prince Amir bin Abdullah al-Hadidi: Both.
Geoffrey Seacombe: You have your Germans, your Brits, and your American guns. But if you’re looking for prestige and heritage, I’m feeling Italian Beretta for you, sir. They hunt in pairs. They’ve been at it for 500 years. Oldest gunmakers in the world. You see that engraving? That took a little Italian man two years to etch that pretty picture.
Prince Amir bin Abdullah al-Hadidi: It’s magnificent.
Geoffrey Seacombe: No good in a Chicago gunfight, [holds up rifle] but absolutely wonderful in the green fields of England.
Prince Amir bin Abdullah al-Hadidi: [holds up rifle] I feel an erection coming on.
Geoffrey Seacombe: That’s the appropriate response, sir.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [chuckles] Look at that. Fits like a glove. James Bond’s weapon of choice.
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: [to Eddie] Things have been good between us, yeah? This time last year, we had nothing. But since we started that little farm under the Contessa's palazzo estate, my God! You guys nailed it. Six more farms in less than a year.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You said there was a problem. Why don't you enlighten us?
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: Yeah. There is a real problem. The problem is, uh, Marco Moretti.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Sorry, what? Marco Moretti? What the fսck is Moretti doing in this conversation?
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: We need to talk to him.
Susan "Susie" Glass: The reason we talk to you is so we don't have to talk to El Capo Dei Capi.
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: I know, but then he started sniffing around. He found out we are growing mɑrіjսɑnɑ under the Contessa's palazzo. Marco is her godfather. He was always going to find out. And now he wants a piece of it. Otherwise, he's gonna rip it out of the ground.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hold on, hold on. We're spiraling here, Cico. You pushed us out of an aeroplane without a parachute. You told us you could keep Marco out of this. Where's our Mr. Consistent? Where's our Mr. Reliable?
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: It's Italy. Everything is a surprise, all right? This is why you have me. Okay? So I can stop the crisis.
Susan "Susie" Glass: How much to stop the crisis?
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: Like, forty a year?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Forty what? Forty lira? Forty winks? Forty lashes? Forty nights in the desert? Forty fսcking what, Cico?
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: Forty million euros, obviously.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Okay, that's it. We're off. [turns to walk]
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait. Okay. Fine. Obviously, you know, 40 is unacceptable.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Mm.
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: But this is why you pay me. I have a... a solution.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, it's a pretty big fսcking problem, Francesco, so it better be a big fսcking solution.
Francesco "Cico" Maldini: Well, um, how familiar are you with the works of Botticelli? A small picture of his is coming up for sale at an auction house in London. Marco is obsessed with his work.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [discussing without Cico] It's a punchy ask.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Six million's not much if it has the desired effect. Marco Moretti runs a serious organization. Extortion, kidnap, torture, they're into all of it. And they've got heavyweight backing from church and state.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Look, I'm not questioning the power of Marco Moretti. I understand the nuance and sophistication of buying a painting by his favorite Renaissance artist. My question is whether or not Cico is the most effective method to access him.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I know you don't like him. I like him even less than you do. But we've got to keep him on side. At least in the short term. Anyway, you don't have to like everyone you work with. I know who you do like.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: What does that mean?
Susan "Susie" Glass: It can mean whatever you want it to mean. [walks away]
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Sorry, can I help you?
Nanny Asante: [observing vintage vehicle] I don't know. Can you?
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Are you lost?
Nanny Asante: Yes. I think I'm in a dream. This is the most beautiful machine I've ever seen.
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: [embraces him] Well, then. Let me wake you up from this dream.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Straighten things out with the Italian?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Man's a disaster, Susie. And I smell a rat with the Botticelli.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hm. We've only got his word that that missile will reach its destination. I know you don't wanna buy the Botticelli. Either way, we need to speak to my father.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. Get anywhere with Lord Hawthorne?
Susan "Susie" Glass: [inhales sharply] Well, we have a number. Do I owe you a Happy Meal?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: But there's a small caveat.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Caveat?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. He's taken an interest in Jack.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Right, what sort of interest?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: An anthropological one. What does that mean? Well, he wants to, uh, take him for dinner, maybe to the opera, and then, uh, you know, wank him off a bit.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hm. That shouldn't be a problem. I'll leave it to you to tell my father that his son needs to bring a peer of the realm to оrgasm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You leave it with me.
Bobby Glass: [in a sauna] You ever heard of the myth of the Bannik?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yeah. The shapeshifting spirit that supposedly frequented the steam rooms of Northern Europe.
Bobby Glass: The story goes that your Bannik, well, he's a... he's a mischievous kind of spirit. Sometimes he appears as a naked little man stroking his beard, smoking a pipe. But you be careful that you don't invite in other kinds of spirits. If you're asking his advice, you gotta make sure you pay him his due. Otherwise, uh, he can get up to all sorts of mischief. [Bannik appears invisible to Eddie] Fortunately, there are other rituals that you can use that appease the Bannik. Now, these rituals range from smothering a black-feathered chicken and burying his unplucked corpse under your steam house, or you can just offer him a fir branch when you've finished your steam and say thank you. But you gotta be sure you pay him. Now, your Bannik, he does have his uses.
Susan "Susie" Glass: And what would those be, Father?
Bobby Glass: Well, he can see into the future. I'll show you how to do it.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Oh.
Bobby Glass: [gets up] Now, you stand with your back to the furnace, which you leave half open. Now, you ask the Bannik a question, any question you want, but the Bannik, he won't answer you directly, you see. He can't talk. He can only touch. Now, if it's a good omen, you'll feel his little hand pat you on the back. But if it's a bad one, well, he'll scratch you with his sharp little claws.
Susan "Susie" Glass: And what question did you ask him, then?
Bobby Glass: I asked him about the emergence of the Mafia boss, Marco Moretti, and this business about the picture.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Right. And what exactly did this Bannik say, then, Bobby?
Bobby Glass: Do I buy the Botticelli for Marco Moretti? [Bannik's hands appear on Bobby's shoulders] The Bannik gave my back a lovely little fսcking rub.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm.
Bobby Glass: [points] You ought to buy him that picture.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, my concern is, despite our early success that we've enjoyed in Italy, Cico, he remains sloppy and unreliable.
Bobby Glass: But, if he smooths out the business with Moretti, then he's getting the job done. Buy him the fսcking picture! The Bannik has spoken, okay?ǃ
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Loud and clear.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: He's getting worse, Susan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: No. He's just winding you up. Bit of fun.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: He's making decisions based on the advice of a mythical creature.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Like I said, fun.
"There's a Rat in the Kitchen" [2.02]
Stanley Johnston: [To Eddie] This cathedral has stood here for nearly a thousand years, almost as long as your family has possessed its title. It's generally accepted that man has not evolved architecturally since the construction of these medieval cathedrals. Our ambitions have become short-sighted. Man's desire to unify with God has fallen on fallow ground. God didn't deliver, or man didn't deliver. The experiment has failed.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Who said the experiment is over, Mr. Johnston? Never show a fool your work until it's complete.
Stanley Johnston: Do you know why the monarch holds the orb and scepter during the coronation ceremony?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, for the same reason that there is a spire on this cathedral and a nave underneath it. The spire and the scepter represent the masculine, the orb, the feminine.
Stanley Johnston: Giving and taking. Sun and moon. Positive and negative. Phallus and womb. Bat and ball. Bottle and glass. A pattern hidden in plain sight, but only observed by a few. The classical architects constructed all positions of power with a domed roof and an obelisk, column or spire. The crown represents the conscious reconciliation of these two opposing forces. The mistake people make is thinking the king is a man, not a symbol. He is the personification of the individual's quest to become whole. This has always been the hidden agenda of the monarch. The unification of these two disparate forces to wield a greater power.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Where are we going with this, Mr. Johnston? And why are we in this cathedral?
Stanley Johnston: What do you know about this sheepskin parchment we have over here?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, it's the Magna Carta, arguably one of the most significant constitutional documents of all time.
Stanley Johnston: Just as the king is the spiritual scepter, this document is the material orb. Your ancestor was one of 25 barons that forced the king to sign this document.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I'm aware of that.
Stanley Johnston: Your DNA is baked into the keystone of Western civilization. A legitimate king could find the balance that was lost. To quote you, Your Grace, "Never show a fool your work until it's completed." What this country needs is a king that deserves such a crown. Your ancestor was the poison. You are the remedy. What's the difference between bad shit and good manure? The answer is you, Your Grace. You have the unique ability to alchemize that which is poisonous into that which is divine. The ability to choose between judgment and mercy. A harmless man is not a complete man. A complete man is a dangerous man who has judgment under voluntary control. They cannot mistake your kindness for weakness. The question is... will you accept the challenge?
Lord Hawthorne: [at an eating establishment] I've always taken great pleasure in the culinary delights of the invertebrate. [chuckles] The crushed ice. The gleaming treasure served up on a calciferous shell. The slippery feeling as it glides down your throat. Do you take a couple of chews on the way, or do you prefer to swallow them whole?
Jack Glass: Well, it depends on the oysters. When they're this fresh, you need to give them a bit of a chomp. Make sure they're dead.
Lord Hawthorne: Oh. Wonderful how the animal instinct kicks in, even in as refined a setting as this. Tell me something, Jack. If you had to be an animal, which animal would it be?
Jack Glass: Well, Dad always says I fight like a dog. But I think that's a compliment.
Lord Hawthorne: [chuckles] Oh, you're much higher up the food chain than that. A lion, maybe. Or perhaps a wolverine. I've always identified as a fox. You see, I'm wily and cunning. And I have a very bushy tail.
Jack Glass: Listen, Richard. I don't mind a bit of chasey-chasey, but there's gonna be no sucky-fucky at the end.
Lord Hawthorne: Oh, Jack, Jack, Jack. [chuckles] I think you've completely misread things. I wouldn't...
Jack Glass: I don't mind playing the game and having a little flirt, if it makes you happy. But your cock and my arse? Not gonna happen. Not that I have a problem with it. It just ain't really my relish.
Lord Hawthorne: What is your relish?
Jack Glass: Mіnge, mսff, gash, clunge. Front, not back bottom.
Bobby Glass: [in sauna] So, what do people do at Lord Hawthorne's parties?
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's all very modern, Dad. Not your thing.
Bobby Glass: Right. What did he want? Your cock?
Jack Glass: Yeah.
Bobby Glass: [exhales] Did you give him some?
Jack Glass: If I thought I could get away with just a bit of cock, I would have obliged. But it's my arsehole I was worried about.
Bobby Glass: Nice to see you still got your principles.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: He's saying the terms of the deals weren't met.
Bobby Glass: Well, they met. He went out.
Susan "Susie" Glass: No, he's saying he didn't commit. Did you commit to going out?
Jack Glass: I committed to going out, but not going in.
Bobby Glass: I rest my case. The upshot is Lord Hawthorne's asked to increase the financials as recompense. And given the time constraints... we think we should give him what he wants. What time constraints?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Bobby, the vote to decide who becomes the new hereditary peer is at the end of the week. With Hawthorne's help, we get me into the House of Lords, where I control which way the bill to decriminalize mɑrіjսɑnɑ goes.
Bobby Glass: How much?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: 150.
Bobby Glass: That's a 5x increase. Now, we... we've got to remember our principles here. Jack did what Jack was supposed to do. Jack stuck to his obligations.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Look, 150 is nothing in context. We could have paid him 2 million. Let's not let principles get in the way.
Bobby Glass: [gets up]Sorry? You... You wanna say that again?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I think you heard what I said, Bobby.
Bobby Glass: Yeah, I did. And the statement disturbs me. You see, we don't fսck around with our principles. These people, they don't know who they're dealing with. So we pay them the agreed sum. [slams bench] Now, you put a fսcking gun down on the table in front of them and watch their arsehole fall out. You need a hand with that, you give me a shout. [Bannik places handgun on table] I ain't paying that posh cսոt another fսcking shekel.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: What if we paid Lord Hawthorne out of the problem fund?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Dad wouldn't be happy if he found out.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: If he finds out. He doesn't need to know till we decide to tell him. He'll thank us for our initiative.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You know as well as I do, if we went around his back, he wouldn't look upon it kindly.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: If he finds out, Sue.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You're in a particularly mischievous mood today, Edward.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, just trying to find a solution to the problem.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Why don't we talk to him together? [gets DM from Geoff saying "problem with the lawyer"] Unless you're otherwise engaged.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, it's just Geoff. Don't mind me.
Susan "Susie" Glass: How's he handling his new remit? Must be hard, wearing two hats.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Let's just say he's, uh, extremely capable. Look, uh, it might be worth you flying solo on this one. If we're gonna force Lord Hawthorne's hand, he might respond better to a feminine touch. An iron fist with a Brioni glove.
Susan "Susie" Glass: With the added benefit of allowing you time to resolve your cryptic issue with your capable gamekeeper.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Certainly. Bye.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [Jack pulls up in high performance vehicle] Right, Jack, if you're driving, remember it's a car, not a rocket.
Jack Glass: You're in safe hands, sister dear. [Susie gets i] Buckle up. [takes off]
Lord Hawthorne: [peering into handbag loaded with cash bills] What a lovely bag. I see you have a penchant for flattery, Miss Glass. Despite the elegant Chanel presentation, I will be neither beguiled, intimidated, nor threatened.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'm not threatening you. I'm simply contextualizing the situation.
Lord Hawthorne: I'd like to speak to Eddie. Where is he?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Busy.
Lord Hawthorne: Busy doing what?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hunting, fishing, counting the doves in his dovecote. I don't know. Thirty, plus a night out on the town with my brother is what was agreed. Now, I understand that, despite his best endeavors, Jack failed to deliver what you feel was required. But unless you can articulate what went wrong, we're done.
Lord Hawthorne: He didn't... commit to the evening.
Susan "Susie" Glass: He's not a homosexual. Neither are you, of course, a homosexual. Jack's arse was never on the dartboard.
Lord Hawthorne: I didn't ask for his arse. I wanted a night out on the town, which, as I explained, he failed to deliver on.
Susan "Susie" Glass: There has never been a more heterosexual man to walk this earth than my brother Jack. He's like a dog with six dicks. But they all point in the direction of a vajayjay. Now, if you'd like someone to wank you off, I suggest you close your eyes and imagine some hairy knuckles.
Lord Hawthorne: Oh, that's not my thing, dear.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Mm, I rest my case. Tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna leave you here with that elegant bag with 30,000 cash so you can go buy as many dicks as you like. And you can think over your options. We'll talk tomorrow. [walks out]
Geoffrey Seacombe: [meets Eddie at residence] Sorry to trouble you, Your Grace. We spoke to the lawyer as per your instructions.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You got the address of the accountant?
Geoffrey Seacombe: Over an hour ago. But it seems our, uh, Japanese friend is pretty keen in there.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Be more specific, Geoffrey.
Geoffrey Seacombe: We got what we came for, but he's still torturing the poor soul.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [opens door to Takashi throttling lawyer and holds up card] We have the address of the accountant. I'll take you to him. Let's go.
Takashi : [speaks Japanese into phone, which audibly translates] One has yet to conclude one's work.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, we've finished. Let's go.
Takashi : [speaks Japanese into phone, which audibly translates] One has yet to conclude one's work.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [gestures] Work over. This is NOT the job. Work... over. Good. [Takashi shoots lawyer in the head] Fսck. [walks out] That's a problem, Geoffrey.
Marco Moretti: [on phone] Eddie, how are things progressing with our mutual acquaintance?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Ah, his methods are, uh, a touch extreme, to put it mildly.
Marco Moretti: Yes, but you have the address?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yeah, we have the address. The accountant is renting a house in Castle Combe.
Marco Moretti: [chuckles] Let me make something very clear. Our target is a monster. It's imperative this accountant disappears.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: The agreement was for one body. We're already one body down.
Marco Moretti: Yes, but if our Japanese friend's methods appear a little extreme, there is a good reason for that. Okay? So tell me, is it a problem or not? Yes or no?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: There's no problem.
Joseph "Joe" Green: [playing billiards with Susie] Remember that time me and Jack nicked those mountain bikes? Those Islington boys came looking for 'em all Ralphed up, roided to the nipples, threatening all sorts, and then you, Susie Glass, you tore straight into 'em, didn't ya?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Might have looked the bollocks. They didn't have a bollock between them. It's the tragic price of steroids.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I fancied you after that.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Because I stood up to a couple of council-flat acne backs? Fսck off, Joe.
Joseph "Joe" Green: No. No, obviously I fancied you before that. You were gorgeous. Still are. No, it was the way you wouldn't countenance any shenanigans.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Still don't.
Joseph "Joe" Green: So what exactly is this relationship between you and the Duke?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Professional.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Joe: Incongruous juxtaposition, wouldn't you say? You and His Highness?
Susan "Susie" Glass: That's a paradox, Joe. Paradoxes relate to irony. Ironies correlate to juxtaposition. Really wanna play this game?
Joseph "Joe" Green: I'll play any fսcking game you like, Susie Glass.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Thank you, Joe. Balls in pockets, fingers in pies, noses in other people's business. What are you up to, Big J? You wanna back off pronto before you find yourself in a Chinese finger trap.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I'll tell you why I ask. I wonder if your time would be better suited in a different game.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Different game? What the fսck are you talking about?
Joseph "Joe" Green: More dough. Less bulk. Fatter margins. And your dad wouldn't be barking orders at ya. Bollocks like yours, Susie, are rare. You've got skills, experience. Vision.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Whilst I've no doubt there are vast gains to be had from dealing in the powder, the risk remains that bit too elevated for my liking.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Since when was Susie Glass afraid of heights?
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's not the heights. It's the volatility. It's the South American coke dealers. They love a morbid body puzzle. They chop each other's cousins up into little pieces, put them in plastic bags, and hide them all over the tundra. And they put those pieces back together again like some third-world version of Humpty Dumpty. Nah, you can fսck off, Joe. I like the green fields of England. What I wanna know is if you asked me out 'cause you fancied a bunk up, or 'cause you wanted to sound me out about a change of career?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Can't it be both?
Geoffrey Seacombe: It's not my place to say anything, sir.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Sounds like you're going to anyway, so why don't you go ahead?
Geoffrey Seacombe: This journey that you've embarked on to bring the estate back to its former glory, it seems to be coming at quite a cost. For years, we've been living in the zoo and contracting. Now we're living in the jungle and expanding. And, yes, that does come at a cost.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: [Sabrina and Charly visit Freddy in rehab] Oh, there he is. Little, um, baby Tim. Tim?
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Tarquin.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Tarquin.
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Yeah.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Fabulous, fabulous name. How's he doing?
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: [sighs] Ghastly, most of the time.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: [chuckles] I'd love to give him a cuddle.
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Yeah, of course. Yeah. Just, um, maybe when he wakes up.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Maybe he won't wake up.
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Sorry?
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Maybe he'll stay asleep, 'cause it's peaceful in here. 'Cause it's... Well, I find it peaceful, anyway. [seated at table with Sabrina and Charly] The good news is, I've... I've come to a realization, which I would like to tell you about. It's a big one. It might come as a little bit of a shock. [awkwardly chuckles] But, um, I have been reborn. Spiritually speaking. [sighs] Family is everything to me. I have been less than the older brother I should have been. I haven't been there for you. All those years, hoovering up lines of cоcɑіnе like a fսcking Henry the Hoover. But I wanna be there for you now. For you and... your newborn son.
Sabrina Horniman: Well, that's just-
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Mummy, I failed you and Dad. I... I... I failed in my responsibilities, and, um, I realize that Dad was right to leave everything... everything to Edward. No, he was. He was right. And, um, I'm glad. [chuckles] I'm actually... I'm grateful that he did. Because that all led me here. That being said, I think that I'm ready to come home now. [gasps] If... I mean, if you guys want me to.
Sabrina Horniman: Yes!
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Yeah.
Sabrina Horniman: Oh God, of courseǃ
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: You'll have me back?
Sabrina Horniman: We want you home.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Great.
Sabrina Horniman: We do, my darling.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Great.
Sabrina Horniman: I do think it's important not to rush into these things.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: I'm not rushing. I've thought about it a lot. I've got a bag packed.
Sabrina Horniman: Yes, well, not today.
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: We don't have room in the car.
Sabrina Horniman: There's no room in the car.
Sabrina Horniman: [being driven away] Did you notice a lot of crucifixes?
Charlotte "Charly" Horniman: Among other things.
Sabrina Horniman: There's something very strange going on.
Gabrielle: [calling Jack, spying on Eddie, Geoff and Takashi breaking into a cottage] They've just pulled up to a cottage now. Three of them got out. The Duke, the keeper, and some Japanese-looking geezer.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Do we know any Japanese-looking gentlemen?
Jack Glass: Dad's chef?
Susan "Susie" Glass: [on phone] Keep your head down and us updated.
Jack Glass: Why are we keeping an eye on the Duke then?
Susan "Susie" Glass: He's sniffing around the Italians. Too much nose to bum. He's been pulling on the lead a bit recently. Not a lot. Just a little tug every now and again. It's just a feminine instinct at this stage, Jackie boy. But I wouldn't underestimate that instinct.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: [served a drink by Susie in the boxing training gym office] Thank you. What a wonderful place for an office. Such a masculine atmosphere. You can just taste the testosterone. And yet here you sit, a beautiful rose in a tangle of thorns.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I like to think my feminine sensibilities act as something of a counterbalance.
Accountant Richard's wife: What are you gonna do with the rat? Kill it or let it out in the garden?
Accountant: Kill it.
Accountant Richard's wife: [realizes implication] There is a rat, isn't there? [holds out hand and Richard embraces it and kisses it]
Susan "Susie" Glass: [Eddie and Geoff pull up to Hastead manor] Good afternoon, Captain. You look like you've had a day of it. Anything you'd like to divulge?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Why don't we discuss it over a cup of tea?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Let's skip the tea. Get to the part where you tell me why there's a body in the back of your car. Are you gonna deny it?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Geoffrey? [Geoff opens trunk to reveal Takashi's body] I have a plan for that body.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Can I remind you of your position in the hierarchy? You work with us, not outside of us, and at the end of the day, my dad is the boss. It's best not to forget that.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I am well aware of the hierarchy, Susan. Who is he? There's a long and complicated explanation, which I'll share with you in the fullness of time. Back to the plan, please. [motions head] The plan is to use this body to bring Lord Hawthorne into the fold, thus securing my place in the House of Lords. First, we get one of your people to intercept him at one of his decadent, all-weekend parties. When he sets his drink aside, we'll slip him a goodnight pill. And the next morning, he'll wake up to a lovely surprise. [Lord Hawthorne wakes up in bed next to Takashi's body]
Susan "Susie" Glass: [calling] Lord Hawthorne, how are you this fine morning? Oh, that's terrible. Where are you? Good thing you called me. We have an understanding with the people that own that venue, so it's definitely something I can help you with. As luck could have it, we happen to be in the neighborhood. Stay where you are.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [walking into hotel room to see Takashi's body] Looks like quite the party.
Lord Hawthorne: I have no idea what happened.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Don't worry, Dickie. I'm sure we can find a way to sort it out for you. All will be well, won't it, Eddie?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Exactly.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [sitting in vehicle] So your intention is to let the bill go through, decriminalize mɑrіjսɑnɑ, and evoke the wrath of my dearly beloved father because, what, you wanna go legitimate?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: It's not about legitimate or illegitimate, Susie. It's about having our cake and eating it. With Lord Hawthorne's backing, we let the bill go through. Then, meanwhile, we invest in a legitimate company that we bring in to sell our illegally grown weed on a legitimate market, avoiding the cost of regulation, undercutting our competitors, and becoming the corner shop of cannabis.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What about the elephant in the room? My father wants the bill blown out of the water.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Your father's got the blinkers on.
Susan "Susie" Glass: He's not gonna appreciate being blindsided.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Then we wait until we can present a fait accompli and we choose our moment extremely carefully.
Susan "Susie" Glass: "We"?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes, we. I was always gonna bring you in. I wanted to make sure I could deliver.
Susan "Susie" Glass: And you're confident you can?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, with you on board, I am.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'd better think about it very carefully, then.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You'd better.
John "The Gospel" Dixon: What are you praying for, Freddy?
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: For guidance.
John "The Gospel" Dixon: And do you feel like you have received that guidance?
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: I don't know, I don't know.
John "The Gospel" Dixon: He is listening. I prayed to him when I lost my brother. And my prayers were answered.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Because now I've got you. You are praying for your loss, for that which was taken from you. And here I am, right by your side. For we are now brothers. And together, [places hand on Freddy's shoulder] we'll make sure we get back what's rightfully yours.
"Do You Reject Satan?" [2.03]
Accountant Richard's ghost: [to Eddie looking over pastures] Oh, this is a beautiful spot. Really peaceful.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You're spoiling the moment. Again.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Morning, Susan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Captain. Been taking a look at your projections. I didn't realize mɑrіjսɑnɑ was the second-most valuable crop in the United States.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm. Other than soybeans. Americans do love a soybean.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Reckon there's a political will to push it through?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Decriminalization is a win-win. Not only do you reduce crime, relieving pressure on the police and freeing up space in the prisons for those naughty little criminals, you also bring in additional tax revenue worth billions a year. Consumers will be able to choose between expensive legal weed that they buy in a shop and inexpensive illegal weed they buy on the street.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You're confident decriminalization wouldn't have a negative impact on the pre-existing market that's provided both bread and butter to my family for the last generation?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: The only difference is, instead of one line on the graph, there are now two big, fat ones.
Susan "Susie" Glass: The prospect of doing this without my father's permission leaves me with a sense of trepidation. He may look like Father Christmas, but if you end up on his naughty list, a lump of coal at the bottom of your stocking is gonna be the least of your worries.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: The bill's gonna go through, whether he likes it or not. If we get in now, we can use our position to take advantage. We wait, and we get left behind.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Can I count on your support?
Susan "Susie" Glass: [answers phone] You all right, Jimmy?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Sorry to interrupt you, boss. I think we've got a bit of a problem down at the farm. Only it's a bit delicate. Maybe even politically motivated.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What sort of problem, Jimmy?
James "Jimmy" Chang: They call it a go-slow. It's a strike aimed at reducing productivity by moving at half the speed.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Jimmy? How long have they been doing this?
James "Jimmy" Chang: It’s kind of hard to tell. I worry my sense of time has become a little bit fluid.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Right, who’s gonna step forward and explain what the fuck is going on? Please.
Ned "Red Ned": [raises hand] Yeah. I will. Well, and, um, I speak for my colleagues too. [walks over] We’ve been left no choice but to undertake, like, radical industrial action. My friend Randall, who worked here up until last week, wanted to supplement his income by signing up for one of your clinical trials. [chuckles awkwardly] Which is fair enough. You know, it’s just a bit of weed, right? [scene of bad drug test reaction victim being restrained] Wrong. Wrong. It... It’s not... Uh... Okay. Um... He has an adverse reaction resulting in a mental health episode that sees him requiring hospitalization. And what kind of support is he offered? Hm? No compensation, no sick leave, no compassion whatsoever.
Susan "Susie" Glass: My compassion’s reserved for kittens. And how much I tip my masseuse. Not some interloper who’s trying to strong-arm my entire workforce.
Ned "Red Ned": This is a mutual workforce decision, and you should be aware that it is coordinated with, like, eight... [turns over shoulder and calls] Was it eight?
Colleague: Yes.
Ned "Red Ned": ...eight of the 12 other weed farms.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Blanket, go upstairs and call... [clears throat and whispers] What, uh... What’s your name again?
Ned "Red Ned": Uh, it’s Ned. [offers handshake which Eddie disregards] From... Nah, you’re cool.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: So, Ned, what’s the, uh, ask from your workforce?
Ned "Red Ned": 20% pay increase across the board, full hour’s break each shift, four weeks’ holiday pay, six weeks’ sick leave. And if all of that results in a boost in productivity, as I’m pretty confident that it will, then a conversation in due course about a reasonable slice of profit participation.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Ooh. Twenty’s strong, Ned.
Ned "Red Ned": Those are our terms.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well... leave it with us. [walking out into hanger] This could prove extremely expensive if we’re not careful, Susan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It’s not the financial hit I’m worried about. It’s the reputational one. People feel they can’t trust us, they’ll start looking elsewhere.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yeah. What’s the deal with the clinical trials, Jimmy? Since when did we start experimenting on our workforce?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Product development, innit? You know, you gotta stay ahead of the game. I sort of let the twiggers smoke some of the prototype buds now and then, just... just to get a little in-house database. No big deal really.
Blanket: Checks out, boss. WhatsApp group’s going crazy. Strikes reported in six farms and counting.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: He’s obviously the ringleader. We should take him out to the woods.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Easy there, gunslinger. The twigger world’s a small one, and they’re a fragile breed.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We are a capitalist criminal organization. We shouldn’t be subject to the whims of employee industrial action.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I’m not saying we should. But if they find out Red Ned’s walked into a hole in the ground after standing up on their behalf, they’re not gonna be happy.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: All right, what about 5% to those that can prove their loyalty?
Susan "Susie" Glass: We can get it lower. [announcing to Ned] A 3% pay increase. A full hour’s break for every shift. Two weeks’ paid leave. Three weeks’ sick pay. And profit participation is off the table.
Ned "Red Ned": Okay. Th... That’s not good enough.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, the offer is final and non-negotiable. Anyone who refuses to accept the offer will be vacated from these premises. Failure to do so will be construed as an acceptance of that offer.
Ned "Red Ned": Well, you can’t force us to accept it.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Don’t confuse kindness with weakness.
Ned "Red Ned": I’m not.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: There is no conversation. You either accept the offer, or you’re all fired.
Ned "Red Ned": Well, what about me? I refuse to accept it because... [thug grabs Ned and drags him to room] :Susan "Susie" Glass: Okay, okay, okay. I mean, we are united, okay, and united we standǃ So... O- Okay.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We can’t just let him walk away, Susan. We have to make it clear that if he breathes a word about anything, it will be his last.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I’m not against reminding him of the importance of discretion. Blanket, got your yogger? Stick it in his fucking head. [Blanket holds gun to Ned's head] Ned, listen. I think you’ve forgotten yourself, darling. So let me remind you of the situation. We don’t negotiate. We kill. Do you understand me? What’s the matter? Cat got your bollocks? Nod if you understand me. [Ned nods frightened] Great. Right, let’s get back to work, shall we?
Ned "Red Ned": Fucking hell. You can’t just go sticking guns in people’s heads.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Shut him up. We’re human beings. [thugs grab Ned and slams him onto table] You’re about to step into a new world, Ned. One where the old Ned doesn’t exist anymore. Right now, you are a blip, a grease spot. The kind of thing we just get fucking rid of. Do I make myself perfectly clear? Get him out of my sight. Go.
Blanket: [takes away Ned] Fucking move. Move!
Susan "Susie" Glass: You seem a little wound up today, Captain. Think you should book in for a back rub.
Bobby Glass: So what’s these whispers I’m hearing?
Susan "Susie" Glass: What whispers?
Bobby Glass: Rumors from the firmament. Things that I’m not being told. Things that I’m hearing secondhand.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You’ll have to be more specific, Dad. Joe Green. [Susie scoffs] He’s a fucking wrong’un.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I bumped into him when we were buying the Botticelli. I’ve not seen him in years.
Bobby Glass: That’s because he’s in the chop game. And that’s something we don’t wanna be fucking involved in.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Fucking hell. Spare me the speech. I’ve heard it more than I care to remember.
Bobby Glass: All right, all right. Look, I know you and Joe go back a long way. All right? And I don’t mind you saying hello to him. You know, “Hello, Joe. You want a cup of tea and a sticky bun?” But if he starts offering you a kilo of packet, that’s fucking something different. There needs to be a strict delineation.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I hear you loud and clear, Dad.
Nanny Asante: Have you heard the news? The King is in.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Ah, swift work, Nanny. Thank you.
Nanny Asante: Charlotte’s raced up to tell Mama.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. How are you?
Nanny Asante: All right, good.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, she’ll be very happy. We haven’t had a visit from a monarch since the 18th century, believe it or not.
Nanny Asante: Well, he’s particularly excited to meet you, Eddie. A duke done good in farming, no less. When I told him about how much you’re raking in on your various agricultural exploits, he was gagging to find out more.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I hope you didn’t build me up too much.
Nanny Asante: You won’t disappoint, Eddie. You won’t. You’ve changed since you left the army. In a good way, I hasten to add. Most people who’ve seen what you have will either disappear into a bottle or blow their brains out.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: It’s certainly a struggle for many of our comrades. Some more than others.
Nanny Asante: Well, you, my friend, do seem to have grabbed life by the lapels.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: That’s kind of you to say, Nanny. But I think, uh, it’s not 100% accurate.
Nanny Asante: You’ve never been any good at taking compliments, Eddie. Part of your charm, I suppose.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm.
Nanny Asante: Anyway, I’ll go and lend some moral support. Preparations for a royal visit can feel daunting to the uninitiated.
Susan "Susie" Glass: How much is missing?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We're just doing the inventory now. Jimmy?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Um... Six. Maybe four, five more?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Safe to assume this is the work of Red Ned?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, he's not picking up the phone, but he was definitely not by himself.
Geoff Seacombe: There were six of 'em. Three in each van. And they were on their toes.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Right, well, obviously, we need to get it back ASAP. Can't be seen to be weak. If there's a crime, there needs to be a punishment.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Where does Ned live?
Blanket: No idea.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Why don't we know that?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Never came up.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Downside of having no HR department.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Speak to his comrades. Get us an address. Geoffrey.
James "Jimmy" Chang: There may be an added complication. Some of the weed that was taken was from the product development area. Sensitive materials, not quite ready for the open market.
Susan "Susie" Glass: How?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Psychotically complicated.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Meaning?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Early results suggested unparalleled feelings of euphoria. We thought we cracked it. Got a new market. First customers ecstatic. New market, new money, new game, but...
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: But what, Jimmy?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Then we hit a bit of a bump in the road. Right, this gear that's been stolen, what does it do to people?
James "Jimmy" Chang: Not nice things. In fact, boss, nasty things. Very, very nasty things. [scene of victim being restrained by hospital staff in a psychotic episode] First, you start foaming at the mouth like a rabid baboon. Then the visions start. Flame-breathing dragons. Demonic bats with saber-tooth fangs. Old men heads working two donkey cocks... Proper fսcking nightmare fuel.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Why was this happening?
James "Jimmy" Chang: 'Cause we laced it with stuff.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Right. And what about the others, Jimmy?
James "Jimmy" Chang: [scene of victim attacking convenience store security] Oh, the second smoker, he's gone proper fսcking wonky. Thought he saw the lizard king in a bag of frozen peas. Security's gone for him, and the lizard king attacks. Security's out cold. The lizard king thinks he's gonna wake him up with a magic potion he's squeezed from the tіt of an eight-headed elephant god. Tried to bring the geezer back to health. He's ended up in hospital, with two scrambled eggs for brains. Oh, and the last one, yeah, that was the maddest. He told his girlfriend he was an F16. Took off from an aircraft carrier on a mission to attack the underworld, where he could decimate goblins and orcs. [scene of a victim jumping off a roof laughing maniacally] Poor soul left this earth on impact. [mimics explosion]
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: What exactly have you added?
James "Jimmy" Chang: So, we started experimenting on synthetic DMT.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What the fսck, Jimmy?! We sell a relaxant after a day's work, not something that time-warps you into the multi-verse or an intergalactic fսck zone. Maybe a little bit of regulation isn't so bad after all.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, Jimmy, thank you. You're dismissed.
James "Jimmy" Chang: Thank you, Your Grace. Boss.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Now, it's one thing looking weak in front of our competitors, but it's another thing entirely when people start dying this theatrically. When that happens, the authorities, the media, public attention gets caught. Just think of the headlines. "Flying drսg cripple suffocates paranoid policeman with one of his five-a-day."
Susan "Susie" Glass: We need to find Ned.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Wouldn't call it salubrious, would you?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, I think it's rather charming.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'm starting to feel we should've chucked him a few extra quid. The state of this shithole. :Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I wouldn't have put you down for a bleeding-heart liberal.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I know you wanted to take him out to the woods, but the truth is, you can't run a business if you execute every employee that wants to leave.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I didn't want to execute every employee. Just him.
Susan "Susie" Glass: We couldn't have known this was gonna happen.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: He's an agitator. It was only a matter of time before he caused us a problem.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Mm. The truth is, you're just worried this dodgy weed is gonna jeopardize your chances to push the bill through Parliament.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yeah, and I'd be a bloody fool not to be. I've got a lot riding on this. I'm gonna do everything in my power to push it through.
Jack Glass: Red Ned's long gone. I found something though.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I reckon he's been pinching for a while now, but not to that scale. Any clues as to his current whereabouts?
Jack Glass: Nope. There's a few letters for his flatmate from the doctor. Something about enforced hospitalization?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Ah. That'll be Randall.
Jack Glass: Mm. Why don't we have a word with him?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Might be a bit of a one-sided conversation, Jackie, my dear.
Blanket: [hands Susie phone] Some geezer wants a word, boss. He's calling from Red Ned's phone. Only, it's not Red Ned. [all migrate to family room]
Susan "Susie" Glass: [seated in family room] Who's calling?
Victor: Who I am, it doesn't matter. What matters is, I can help you retrieve the product you have misplaced.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: It hasn't been misplaced. It's been misappropriated.
Victor: I'm sure you don't want that to become common knowledge. If people think they can steal from your organization, your reputation suffers.
Susan "Susie" Glass: The merchandise you're in possession of turns out to be a hazardous substance. We'd like it back.
Victor: I'm not interested in it. I just want to facilitate a way in which it can be returned to you.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What's your proposal, caller?
Victor: The person who did this clearly didn't know what he was doing. I can make sure he won't do it again. But in order to return your weed, I would like us to sit down and have a conversation.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, you return the product, then we have the conversation.
Victor: It's important we speak first. I'll text you a time and an address. [hangs up]
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [sighs] We have to have that meeting, Susan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's a bear hug. Whatever opportunities this mysterious caller wants to discuss, it's a move.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Without a doubt. But at the risk of going over ground that's already covered, that particular batch of weed is gonna be a big problem.
Susan "Susie" Glass: If we do a smash and grab, we risk starting a war.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: That's why we take the meeting and deal with it in our own way.
Jack Glass: For what it's worth, I think we should loop in the paterfamilias before this gets messy.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: In the hope that he'll provide some blinding insight he hasn't been able to give us thus far?
Susan "Susie" Glass: No. Because whether you like it or not, he's still the guv'nor. [gets up and walks away]
Ahmed Iqbal: Unfortunately, Mr. MacDougall has decided not to pursue your offer.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: And you proposed the 18, as discussed?
Ahmed Iqbal: I did indeed.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Any insight into why he didn’t agree?
Ahmed Iqbal: He declined to go into details with me over the phone, but his response was emphatic.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Emphatic how?
Ahmed Iqbal: Ah, a certain amount of language was used.
Simon MacDougall: [flashback scene] It’s my land, and I’m not gonna sell it to that posh cunt!
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. I think a more direct approach might be necessary. Neighbor to neighbor.
Geoffrey Seacombe: Sorry to bother you, Mr. MacDougall. The Duke would like a word.
Simon MacDougall: He’s here?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hello, Simon. Sorry to drop in unannounced.
Simon MacDougall: Your Grace.
Simon MacDougall: So, what do we owe this rare pleasure to?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, uh, I heard you’ve decided to sell up.
Simon MacDougall: That’s correct.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I was a little disappointed that you hadn’t let me know, given the conversation we had.
Simon MacDougall: Yes, sorry about that. I decided to, uh, test the water on the open market. The offer I gave you is much higher than you’d get on the open market.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I mean, why don’t we just save yourself the trouble?
Simon MacDougall: I’d prefer not to.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: And, uh, do you have another buyer in the waiting?
Simon MacDougall: Nope, not yet.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Uh, Simon, is there anything I’ve done to offend you?
Simon MacDougall: I’ve lived next door to your family for 15 years. Every Christmas, we’ve invited you round for drinks. Not once has anyone dignified us with a response to say that you could not make it.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, I am a very busy man, Simon, and my mother a poor correspondent. For that, I can only apologize for our collective failures. In the light of that, why don’t I raise the offer to 19 million right here, right now, and we call it a day?
Simon MacDougall: You see, you... you know what the trouble is with… with people like.... like you? You... you think you’re better than us, with your… with your seat and your title and your… your dodgy mates. Don’t think I don’t know what goes on up at that estate. I’ve... I’ve heard the rumors. You think you can just buy whatever you want, but the truth is that you can’t. So, why don’t you take your 19 million and shove it up your arse?ǃ
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I don’t blame you, Simon, for the cloud of misapprehension that you’re currently under. My offer to you is 19 million. Tomorrow, it will be 18. The next day, 17. And it will continue to decrease until it reaches zero. It’s a very generous offer. I suggest you accept it.
Simon MacDougall: If you think you can intimidate me, like some kind of gangster, you can’t.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: But what if you were right, Simon? What if, as well as a duke and a peer of the realm, I was, indeed, a gangster? Do you really think that you can stop me getting what I want?
Kris: Just let me do the talking from now on, okay? It's a big fսcking deal. You need this, I need this, we both need this. Be professional. Stuff that shithole.
Ned: We will, 100%.
Kris: [Victor executes Ned] Fսck!
Victor: You don't make money by stealing from Bobby Glass. Instead, you make an enemy out of him. If you make Bobby Glass your friend, if he respects you and you work with him, that's how you make money from Bobby Glass.
Bobby Glass: If you’d brought this to me sooner, there wouldn’t have been a problem, you see, ’cause I’d have stopped it. Now there’s been a whole catalog of issues, and in every instance, I would have said no. I mean, you start messing around with the gear so much that people are murdering government officials. No. You start letting workers walk away from their operation so they can come back and steal from us. No. You start agreeing to sit down with people who stole from us. No. No. Fucking no. Here’s what you’re gonna do. Nothing. I’ll handle it.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No. No, no, no, no. We cannot do nothing. We have to locate the product and get it off the open market.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I’ll handle it.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No. If the police trace the weed back to us, the effects of that would be catastrophic. Well, what would be catastrophic is if we sat down with these people, ’cause that makes us look weak, and that is not acceptable. As soon as they start shifting the product, we’ll find them. We’ve got soldiers on the street of every city in this country. And the moment they get a sniff, well, they’re gonna let us know. In fact, if you listen very carefully, you might be able to hear ’em now. [gestures] Can you hear that? Can... Can you hear them?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, Bobby.
Jack Glass: It’s the sound of the jungle drums, Eddie.
Bobby Glass: That’s right, Jackie boy. It’s the sound of the jungle drums. And as soon as the message comes through, we’ll move in and kill the lot of ’em. [clap hands] Job done.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No. We are not waiting that long.
Bobby Glass: Well, what’s the rush?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: The rush? Bobby, as you’ve said many times in the past, the key to our success is in longevity, our ability to stay under the radar. If people start fucking murdering each other and going mad on the street, the police, the press, they have a field day.
Bobby Glass: No, you... you don’t get to tell me about longevity.
Susan "Susie" Glass: He’s right, though, Dad. It’s bad for business.
Bobby Glass: Look, you’re caught up in the micro, but you’re failing to take in the macro of it all. That’s where the real longevity kicks in. From where I’m standing, this problem could be to our advantage. I mean, a load of lads losing their marbles over a marijuana-induced psychosis on the eve of the vote for the decriminalization is, um... Well, it might be the final little push we need.
Susan "Susie" Glass: We can’t just disobey orders from the patriarchy, Eddie.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: That’s exactly what we’re gonna do. Besides, I don’t feel like sitting in prison saunas and talking about jungle drums anymore. It’s like working with bloody Mad King George.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Don’t knock the reign of George III. He built Buckingham Palace and figured out the rules to cricket.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Only because his advisors stepped in and made the decisions for him. When he was in charge, we lost America.
Susan "Susie" Glass: We can take it back if you like. Now, how would we locate the product?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, by asserting ourselves with precision.
Susan "Susie" Glass: When you say “asserting ourselves with precision”?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes, I happen to have a colleague I think might be perfect for the occasion.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Do you ever get nostalgic for your former life as a soldier?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. There’s certainly something very seductive about a chain of command. But once you start taking responsibility for your own actions, it’s, uh, very hard to go back.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Do I detect a double meaning lurking beneath the surface there?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, there could be something lurking there if you want.
Victor: [approaches and Eddie lights cigar] Thank you for agreeing to meet. I know you’re serious people, and I am eager to resolve this situation to your satisfaction.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Before we can have any kind of conversation, you’re gonna need to give us our weed back.
Victor: It seems you have a labor problem. I took the opportunity to deal with this problem for you. Clearly, you’re struggling to find good people. I would like to offer you my services to provide you with a more efficient team of workers who I could guarantee would never have the temerity to steal from you.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, there is no deal to be had here, Victor. We’re done.
Victor: You seem to overestimate the strength of your position. Bobby Glass is a big man, but he’s been away a long time. I have some Albanian associates who are inside with him, and they say he’s a little crazy these days. Not crazy like a mad dog. The word for that in Albanian is tërbuar, which means... furious, dangerous, deranged. The word they use for him, çmendur, which means mad like a madman. A lunatic. Nobody fears a man who’s çmendur. They give him coins from their pockets. Crust of bread, maybe. You need us.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, sadly, we disagree. [drops cigar on ground and Andy wipes out Victor's men] Uh, uh, uh. The next round is trained on you. And he will not hesitate to blow a hole in your fucking brain if I give him the signal.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You seem to have mistaken the man for the symbol. Bobby Glass, the man, is flesh and blood, susceptible to the whims of human nature. But behind him, there’s an army. Many of those soldiers have never met him and probably never will, but their loyalty to him, to what he represents, is absolute. So you’re going to return our weed unless you wanna end up like your friends, in the dirt.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [shakes hands] Good work, Andy.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Impressive proficiency you’ve got with that thing.
Andy: Thanks. I’ll be in touch. You know where I live.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Do all former Queen’s Dragoon Guards carry themselves with the same poise?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, sign of a good drill sergeant, Susan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Expensive?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I happen to have a 17th century manor house I’ve recently acquired that needs a custodian. Andy needed new digs and a little direction, so it turned into a win-win.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Useful man to have around.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You never know when you might need him.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Apologies for the tardiness. I was waylaid at the farm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm. Are the workers all happy and capitulated?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Happy enough now that the scourge of socialist agitation’s been eradicated.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. What about our product? Managed to recover it?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Blanket picked up the barrels this morning. They are now buried under six feet of soil, where it can’t turn any more minds into oblivion.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Now, seeing as you’ve already gone against your father once already, would I be correct in assuming you’re gonna join me on the bill?
Susan "Susie" Glass: What makes you think I wasn’t simply moved by the desire to save the loss of innocent lives?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, I wouldn’t dream of suggesting otherwise.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Ah.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I think I know you pretty well now. I have a feeling you’ve already made up your mind.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Am I that easy to read?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You’re many things, Susan. Easy to read isn’t one of them. Same can’t be said of your father, unfortunately.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I know people think my father’s mad, but he’s not. A little eccentric, maybe, set in his ways, and maybe I haven’t always realized that sometimes he’s wrong, but he’s not mad. Saying that, he will be if he finds out.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm. The first thing he’ll know is when the bill goes through, by which time, it’ll be too late to stop it. Then you and I are gonna sit down with him and have a little chat, tell him how much fucking money he’s gonna make.
Susan "Susie" Glass: All right, then, Captain. If we’re gonna hijack democracy in the name of making a healthy profit, we should start rounding up some peers.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes, we should.
"The Bigger Picture" [2.04]
Richard "Dickie" Hawthorne: The House of Lords is one of the oldest institutions in the world. Some say it's an affront to modern democracy. Others that this group of steady-handed experts, unaffected by the vagaries of public opinion, are the only thing stopping the country from tipping over into the abyss.
Bobby Glass: I don't need a fսcking history lesson, Dickie. Cut to the chase.
Richard "Dickie" Hawthorne: Right, yes. The point of the matter is the bill to decriminalize mɑrіjսɑnɑ will be decided on Friday. If the Contents get it, the bill is passed, and you'll be able to buy an eighth of premium-grade wacky-tobaccy from any number of a thousand certified high-street outlets by the end of the year. If the Not-contents get it, the bill will be thrown back to the House of Commons, where it will slowly wither up and die, like a gamey old courtesan with the clap.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Once you take party loyalty into account, the House is split down the middle, which means whoever controls the non-affiliated hereditary peers effectively controls what happens to the bill.
Susan "Susie" Glass: And thanks to the delicate and nuanced work of the boys over the last couple of weeks, I'd say we're quietly confident.
Bobby Glass: Well, that's it, then, isn't it? Job done. This time next week, it'll be as dead as disco.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [at eating establishment] We need you to let the bill go through.
Lord "Dickie" Hawthorne: We've just told your father we'd block it.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Don't worry about him. You need to focus on how you're gonna persuade your compadres to pull a 180.
Lord "Dickie" Hawthorne: What are you talking about?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We know it's a big ask, but given the unique nature of our reciprocal relationship, we thought on this occasion you might be able to pull out all the stops.
Richard "Dickie" Hawthorne: Please don't think I'm not grateful for everything you've done for me.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Say no more. And rest assured, we haven't breathed a word of your little incident to anyone.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Not a word.
Lord "Dickie" Hawthorne: I'm not saying I won't do it, but... Oh dear. Let me explain. [positions condiment bottles on table] Um... You have your red sauce, brown sauce, salt and pepper, your mustard. Now, the Conservatives, they'll never support it. But Labour will. The Liberals are pretty much divided down the middle. And the lion's share of the hereditary peers will follow the money, but that still leaves possibly 20 votes short.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Well, who's the mustard in this analogy, Dickie?
Lord "Dickie" Hawthorne: In addition to the peers who make up the membership of the House of Lords, there are 26 Lords Spiritual. Now, together, they would form a block that could push us over the line. But there is a significant wrinkle that would need to be ironed out in the shape of the Bishop of Sussex.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What's the ish with the bish?
Lord "Dickie" Hawthorne: She's a staunch campaigner against the evil menace of nɑrcоtіcs. But there might be a route into her vestry, so to speak. There is a wayward son in the picture.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm. Well, you leave the bishop to us.
Bishop Thorne: Do you know what Jesus said to the vendors when he cast them out of the temple? He said to them, "It is written." "My house shall be called a house of prayer..."
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: "And you shall make it a den of thieves." I couldn't agree more. You shouldn't hijack people's beliefs in the Almighty for one's own profit.
Bishop Thorne: You're new.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes. I was voted in a couple of weeks ago.
Bishop Thorne: Hereditary. Quite rare these days. Not as rare as bishops.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [chuckles] I wanted to talk to you about the upcoming bill.
Bishop Thorne: I gather you're tight with Lord Hawthorne. I must say, you're very ambitious to champion a piece of legislation so early on in your career.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, I happen to believe that there are various social and economic benefits to legalizing mɑrіjսɑnɑ.
Bishop Thorne: It's a gateway drսg, Your Grace. Have you been to the rehabilitation centers and met the people whose lives have been ruined?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes, I have. My brother happens to be in one right now.
Bishop Thorne: Is that your motivation? The personal angle? Or is it just a narrative flourish you use to sweet-talk the support?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [chuckles] Well, you're certainly very cynical for one with such profound belief.
Bishop Thorne: And you're very naive if you think you can persuade the Church of England to support decriminalization.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I'm merely here to see if there's a way you and I can help each other out. I wanted to talk to you about your son.
Bishop Thorne: Sorry, what did you say?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Oscar. I heard he's got himself into a spot of bother.
Bishop Thorne: [gets up] I think this meeting's run its course.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Let's not be too hasty. Just hear me out, please.
Bishop Thorne: My son has got nothing to do with any of this.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I am aware of that, but I'm also aware that I need your help getting this bill through. And I think I can help him get out of his troubles. So please, tell me what happened.
Bishop Thorne: My son is a very determined individual. He works in property. [sighs] Everything was going very well up until a few months ago. He got involved in a new development. He ended up borrowing money from some disreputable lenders to buy some obnoxious monstrosity out near Ascot. He contacted me three weeks ago, asking to borrow money to repay them. I gave him all I had, but then he called a week later asking for more. I said no. I'm very worried. I... I haven't seen him since. He isn't returning my calls.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, believe it or not, I've had some success in the past dealing with this sort of problem. Why don't you let me carry your burden, and, if I succeed, you can help carry mine?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [at gates of Oscar's residence] The bishop's convinced, if he doesn't come up with the money, he'll suffer the consequences. So we need to identify whoever holds the debt and see if there's a way we can relieve it. Then, if we deliver the son, she'll deliver the vote.
Susan "Susie" Glass: So the bish ish has turned into a mish?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: It would appear so.
Aslan: Can I help you?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We're looking for the gentleman who bought this place. Is he in?
Aslan: Well, if I knew that, which I do, I wouldn't tell you. See, that's outside of my remit. This place here, that's my remit. Anything outside of this place isn't my, um...
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Remit?
Aslan: Yeah.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: How about five grand to see him?
Aslan: Give me ten, I'll take you to him. Come on in. [leading Eddie and Susie through corridor] Obviously, very much just a shell at the moment, but you can clearly see it's got a lot of potential. Smart kid, that Oscar. Got his nut on straight. Truth is, I've been managing this place since they first drew up the plans. Chief security officer, you know what I mean? So, uh, here's one for yah. Instead of a wage, I just took shares in this gaff. All right, here we are. This is us. Youse two got any idea how much a quarter of a percent of 200 million is?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Uh, yeah. £500,000.
Aslan: That's your opinion. This is as far as I'll go. I can't cross this line. There's a conflict of interests. So, if you will, please.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [hands over cash] Of course.
Aslan: [takes cash] Thank you.
Oscar Thorne: [sees Eddie and Susie] Who the fսck are you?ǃ
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Your mother sent us. She's very worried about you.
Oscar Thorne: How the hell did you get in here?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Oscar, we're here to help you.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Although, uh, we might have a few questions.
Oscar Thorne: [giving tour] I was offered this place for a hundred million. I know, right. 35,000 square foot set in 14 acres with its own private lake.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Who'd you borrow the money from?
Oscar Thorne: Pat Gallagher. He's a, uh, super-rich Irish fight promoter looking to spread the risk of his investment.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Do we know Pat?
Susan "Susie" Glass: We do. He's a super-rich Irish cоcɑіnе dealer turned fight promoter. I don't doubt he was trying to wash his dirty money. How much do you owe him?
Oscar Thorne: 50 million. All I needed was another 20 for the refurb, but then he suddenly turns around, tells me he wants his money back with interest. No warning. I tell him, "I don't have that kind of money." "Not until I sell this place. I need a little time."
Susan "Susie" Glass: What do you think?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I think Oscar needs a pass from Pat Gallagher.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [visting Pat at multi level golfing range] Nice form, Patrick.
Pat Gallagher: You can judge a society by how it runs its prisons. Faith, justice, basic human dignity. It's all reflected in how we treat our criminals. How many years did your dad get in the end?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Last count, he was six into a ten stretch. He should get out next year if he behaves himself.
Pat Gallagher: Ten years for fiddling your taxes.
Susan "Susie" Glass: There were extenuating circumstances.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, we could debate the British penal system all day, but we're here to talk about a mutual acquaintance of ours.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Oscar Thorne.
Pat Gallagher: Oscar Thorne? What do you want to help a sorry chancer like that for?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Eddie's a colleague of his mum's, down at the Palace of Westminster.
Pat Gallagher: Oh, the bishop.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yeah. Everyone loves a bishop. Second-best piece on the board.
Pat Gallagher: Oh, you needn't have bothered. I recently agreed to forego the interest on Oscar's debt in return for him running an errand for me. [in flashback intimidating Oscar] I'll give you as much time as you need. All you need to do is pick up a bird for me.
Oscar Thorne: Bird? What... what... what bird?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [in recap scene at Oscar residence] Well, what did he want with the bird?
Oscar Thorne: Not just any bird. A million-pound white saker falcon. They race them in the Middle East. It's a big deal out there. A way of life passed down through generations. What started as Bedouin tradition became big business. Worth more per gram than gold. These birds travel by luxury car, fly in planes. Even have their own passports. There is no greater status symbol than an elite falcon. But the thing about this particular bird was it was a male. For breeding.
Pat Gallagher: [in presence] Its mother won the King Abdulaziz Cup three years running. Its father's lineage can be traced back to the 1970s. It might just be the greatest breeding falcon the world has ever seen. The whole reason I had to get Oscar to pick it up in the first place is I'm not allowed out of the country. Part of my bail conditions. I'm supposed to be in court at the end of the month. My counsel's saying the prognosis is decidedly bleak. You ever heard of Sheikh Khaled Suliman?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes.
Pat Gallagher: His father's the third-richest man in the Gulf.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Well, if you're looking to ingratiate yourself with a member of the Middle Eastern royal family, perhaps we can help. We have a Middle East man who can pull a few strings.
Pat Gallagher: No, I've already pulled the strings. That bird's my golden ticket. When I hand it over to the sheikh, he's gonna give me a visa to live out in the Middle East. And I tell you what, I'd much rather spend my days watching them building cities in the desert than I would rubbing shoulders with your old man at His Majesty's convenience.
Susan "Susie" Glass: There seems to be an issue with the item you commissioned him to purchase on your behalf.
Pat Gallagher: What kind of issue?
Oscar Thorne: [in recap scene at Oscar residence] It was on sale at an auction in America. I book myself a ticket and fly out there to buy the fսcking thing. As soon as I get on the plane home, this idea worms itself into my brain. If these birds are worth so much money... Why don't I make some? As soon as I get back to England, I spend every penny I've got on as many female falcons as I can lay my hands on. I set Pat's falcon up here, and I wait for nature to take its course. But that isn't what happened. What happened is Pat's falcon's gone 'cause THESE FUCKING CUNTS ATE HIM!
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, he seems to have, uh... [clears throat] ...misplaced it. (
Pat Gallagher: How do you misplace a giant fսck¡ng falcon?
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's a very valid question. Unfortunately, one that we don't yet have the answer to.
Pat Gallagher: [points with golf club] You wanna help Oscar, you help him find that bird. If he doesn't have it by the end of the week, I swear to God, I'll kill him myself. If I'm gonna go down for three life sentences, I might as well go down for four. [takes golf swing]
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [approaches] Hm. Let's have a talk, shall we?
Aslan: [walks away] Yes, that'd be nice. [at balcony barrier] Probably doesn't mean much to you, but, uh, 57 properties I've looked after in my time. Not one thing stolen. That means something to me. My name is Aslan. Named after the great lion from the movies. I don't take that name lightly. I take pride in what I do.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We're not gonna find anything on those tapes, are we, Aslan?
Aslan: As I said, I'm a lion.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. Look, we're both aware that your, uh, business partner is very capable of misplacing one of these birds. And, of course, it's not in your remit to look after these animals, but if one of these birds were to go missing, surely you would be the best person to locate said bird.
Aslan: I feel like there is a bond between us. I have invested heavily into Mr. Ozzy and into this place, and it's fair to say, in recent times, he's become somewhat obsessed with these birds. I need him to get his priorities straight, focus on selling this place so I can see my back end. With that in mind, I may have removed one of his distractions.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I see. Clearly, Aslan, you are an incredibly astute businessman, and no doubt you have an inkling of how much people are willing to pay for these birds.
Aslan: I may have a small inkling.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: And it's incredibly hard to find a buyer for these birds. But, Aslan... I am that buyer. And I am willing to pay market rate for a saker falcon.
Aslan: [takes out earpiece] Follow me. [leading Eddie through corridor] Sorry, this place is fսcking huge. Only a few more flights. Oof.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm-hmm.
Aslan: I'm gonna be honest with you 'cause I'm an honest man. I stole the bird. I don't know what's so special about this little wankеr. He just sits about eating, sleeping, shitting. I'll tell you, a bird I like is a parrot. You can have banter with a parrot. [Eddie holds out pound note] What the fսck is that?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, it's a ten-pound note. That bird, Eddie, is worth a million pound. You're right. Now, you may have been able to get one million pounds off Sheikh Khaled Suliman on account of the fact that he and his fellow countrymen are obsessed with falcon racing. Perhaps you'd even get two. But he's not here, is he? I am. And the price for someone who knows you are a fսcking thief who's incapable of doing the one thing you're employed to do, namely not steal from his employer, well, that's ten pounds. So, if you want to keep your precious 0.25%, I suggest you take this money and return the bird to Oscar. [Aslan takes note, then he and Eddie appears on balcony with Pat's falcon] Right, everyone stop what they're doing. We've found the bird.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Hallelujah!
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Hm. I suggest we take him straight to Pat. I'll get the car.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Excellent idea, Captain. Where was he?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, just gone for a little wander, hadn't he?
Oscar Thorne: Wait a minute. Where's his hood?
Aslan: I took it off. He looked ridiculous.
Oscar Thorne: Everybody be calm and stay right where you are. These creatures are apex predators. He needs his hood over his eyes. If he sees anything he thinks is a threat, he's gone.
Aslan: I didn't know. I don't know nothing about birds.
Oscar Thorne: Put the hood on the bird, please.
Aslan: Give me a second. [reaches into jacket] I'm getting the fսcking hood from my pocket.
Oscar Thorne: [drone flies up] Pebbles, you wally, don't let that drone come anywhere near us, you cսոt! [falcon takes off after drone]
Susan "Susie" Glass: Do we have anything in the way of a backup plan?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No. Without that bird, we will be short 26 votes, our attempts to Shanghai the House of Lords will fail, and I'll be on the hook for 60 million to an Italian crime boss. There is no fսcking backup plan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Do you need a sweetie? I think your blood sugar's running low.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Oh, I think I need more than that. I say we go to dinner.
Joseph "Joe" Green: So, pants down, everything, I'm talking everything out.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Everything?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Garlic aioli running down my wrist. And I knew... Looking in her eyes, I knew that she knew.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: You should have warned me how naughty your boyfriend is.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You don't know the half of it. They used to call him Penguin Joe 'cause he shoveled so much snow around.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Penguin Joe. Penguin Joe, wow. Is that why you moved to the US?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Miami. I like the sunshine.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Ah. Is, uh, sunshine...
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Sunshine.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Is that a euphemism for cоcɑіnе?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Mm. If it is, it's the first I've heard of it. I mean, I've heard all sorts. Bang bang, nose whiskey, tornado.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Babe... Babe, I think he was making a joke.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Ah.
Establishment server: Ladies, gentlemen.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Uh, we didn't order that.
Establishment server: [presents wine bottle with sparklers] It's a gift, sir, from the gentlemen at the table over there.
Paul and Frank: [raise glasses and cheer] You all right?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Ah, right. Well, that's very sweet of them. But please don't pour it. Put the sparklers out before we all die of humiliation.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Do we know these people?
Joseph "Joe" Green: It's Tall Paul and Fucksake Frank. Haven't seen 'em for about 15 years. It's a piss-take.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Now, Joe, why don't we not let them ruin what's turned out to be a really lovely evening?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Good plan. I suggest we return the gesture with interest. Bottle of DР, perhaps. Double sparklers.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Good idea. If you're ordering Dom Pérignon for them, you should get some for us as well.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I will. [Bella invites Susie to the bathroom]
Joseph "Joe" Green: [Frank approaches] Here we fսcking go.
Frank: Fսck's sake. All right, Joe, what's happening? Who's your mate?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Edward Horniman. Pleased to meet you. And, uh, thank you for the sparkling gift that was enjoyed by everyone in the restaurant.
Frank: Yeah, yeah, sweet. Frank. [gestures] That's Tall Paul.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Pleasure.
Frank: How you doing? Ain't seen you in years. Where you been? America. Cracking on nicely, I gather. Would've been nice if you shared what was in the trough. You wanna lay off them American portions, though, son. Cheekbone Joe, we used to call him. Handsome cսոt. Double handsome. Rearview mirrors used to strum themselves off gawping at this cսոt. Now look at the size of ya. [laughs]
Joseph "Joe" Green: If you're here to perform, you're doing a shit job. Cool your heels. Cool your own fսcking heels on your own fսcking table.
Frank: What happened to you, Joe? You used to be jolly Joe, happy Joe, happy-go-lucky Joe.
Joseph "Joe" Green: [lifts up shirt to reveal a handgun] I'll be happy if you go back to your fսcking table. And stop driving me mad.
Frank: All right. He's only teasing. Fսcking hell, that's a bit strong, innit, mate? You've got a five stretch there in your belt strap.
Joseph "Joe" Green: You let me worry about my five stretch. [gets up to Frank] You worry about moonwalking back to your fսcking table.
Frank: Yeah, let's go.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: All right. All right. You two clearly have some delightful shared history and a lot to catch up on, but might I suggest a more appropriate occasion? Joseph, why don't you take a seat, please? And, uh, Frank, why don't you head back to your table? We sent you a bottle of 2008 Dom Pérignon as a reciprocal gesture of appreciation.
Frank: There you go, Joe. A man with manners. It's a nice word, that, "reciprocal." [Frank smacks lips] Lanky prick. [walks away]
Joseph "Joe" Green: Sorry about that, Eddie. Seems like he hasn't changed.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [Susie and Bella approach] Here they come.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Hi.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Hello.
Joseph "Joe" Green: All good?
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Good. Susie told me about the missing bird.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Good.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Do you know what sеx it is?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Yeah, it's male. Okay, so you need to find an expert to find the female he's fսcking.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Right.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Very romantic creatures. Her call will bring him back.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Okay, can you help us? Some of your family's magic must have rubbed off on you.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Okay, I'll find the bird. We go now.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Now?
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Now.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: What?
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Let's go.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I think I left my phone at the table. I'll catch you outside.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I'll settle up here.
Frank: [receiving beating from Joe] Fսcking lanky cսոt!
Paul: He was only playing. For fսck's sake, take it easy!
Frank: Don't call the fսcking police!
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: What the fսck did you just do?
Joseph "Joe" Green: [walks past] Nothing. Come on, let's go.
Establishment server: Lucas. Get Avery and call the bloody police. Listen to me.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: There's no need to call the police. I'm sure you have a first-aid box. You just need to staunch the bleeding. [hands over cash to server] This, um, is for your inconvenience. It's best for everyone, especially the reputation of your restaurant.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: I'm glad you came out tonight. Sometimes it's good to mix business with pleasure.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Well, I normally try to keep the two lanes separate.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: [chuckles] And you were never tempted to make an exception for Eddie?
Susan "Susie" Glass: No, we work well together. That's very rare in this business. I'd never do anything to fսck that up. But I'll admit, he has his charms.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: You make a good couple, you and Joe. You seem happier when you're with him. It's a good thing. Sometimes we all need to be happy.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Well, if you can't be happy, be merry.
Oscar Thorne: [to Eddie, Susie and Bella appearing at his residence] Who are they?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: They're here to help. This is the Contessa di Fabri.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Her grandfather was the greatest falconer in the whole of Italy, apparently.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mind turning down the music a bit?
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: No, no. I think it's like a lullaby for the falcons, isn't it?
Oscar Thorne: She's right. These birds, they love a bit of Italian opera.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Well, what you need to understand is falcons are incredibly romantic. When they mate, they mate for life. And this is how we're going to find your missing bird.
Bobby Glass: [to Eddie and Susie in boxing training office] Sit down. I'll get to the point. I've got to be back inside before lights out.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You know you didn't need to kill Lord Hawthorne, Dad.
Bobby Glass: Well, his blood is not on my hands. You gave me no choice.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: And in one deft move, everything that we've built collapses like a house of cards.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's not just Lord Hawthorne who's been killed. The bill to decriminalize mɑrіjսɑnɑ is as dead as he is.
Bobby Glass: I gave you a clear order. You disobeyed that order. You fսcking betrayed me.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Everything that we did was purely in the interest of our organization.
Bobby Glass: Well, I'll tell you what. When I want your opinion, I'll fսcking give it to yah.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Not so long ago, you looked me in the eye, and you told me you saw a general.
Bobby Glass: And a general reports to a field marshal. Now, I'm a fսcking field marshal. I don't know why I'm telling you this. You should fսcking know this.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: The problem, Bobby, is you're not listening. I'm out in the field, whereas you're locked up. You don't have the benefit of the bigger picture. Taking advice from, how do I put this, mythical fսcking creaturesǃ
Bobby Glass: The bigger picture? Well, the field marshal's job is to see the bigger picture. And the picture's so fսcking big, you'd be amazed. Who I wish to take my counsel from is well considered, but you wouldn't understand that, because this is about the bigger... fսcking... pictureǃ
Susan "Susie" Glass: Oh, come on, Dad. You've got to admit it. You do come across as a mad cսոt sometimes.
Bobby Glass: What?! Brutus! I'll fսcking deal with you when I extract this dagger from my fսcking back!
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'm just saying--
Bobby Glass: I know what it is! This... this fսcking snake has turned you against me! My fսcking daughter!
Susan "Susie" Glass: That is not what's going on-
Bobby Glass: Yes, it fսcking is! You're beguiled by this snakey fսcking snake! Hypnotized!
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Everything we did-
Bobby Glass: Shut your fսcking mouth! Shut it! Don't say a fսcking word, you fսcking snake! You would do well not to talk to me like that, Bobby. What did you say?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You heard me.
Bobby Glass: Did I? All I can fսcking hear is a fսcking hiss!
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [gets up to Bobby] Don't you fսcking talk to me like that!
Bobby Glass: Oh, well, there you go. Hey? Nice to see you've, uh... you've grown a pair of bollocks. Yeah? You've nurtured 'em, ain't ya? Developed 'em. He's right, you know? He's fսcking right. I mean... He could never be the man he was. And we should... address him in the fashion... that he deserves. All right, but look. Let's wrap this up, and, uh... We've got a lot to think about, haven't we? And in the fullness of time, uh, I'll explain to you what the bigger picture is. [Eddie and Susie gets up, gestures to Susie] Not you. [Eddie then Jack leaves, sighs] Oh, look. It's understandable. I mean, he's a very handsome fella.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It was nothing like that.
Bobby Glass: No? Well, I don't want you seeing him again. Not until I say you can. You see, what you're gonna do is you're gonna... you're gonna take an extended break. A holiday. A respite. I've got you business class to the Bahamas. I was gonna get you first class, but I thought, "fսck it, you've been a naughty girl." Two weeks. And then you can... yeah, well, you can come back with your senses all refreshed, and, um, we can take things from there. Okay, Dad. Give us a kiss.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What about the Duke?
Bobby Glass: Don't worry about the Duke. I'll take care of him. [they kiss]
"A Suburban A-Road on the Outskirts of Basingstoke" [2.05]
Hector Rodriguez: [leading Eddie and Susie through Peruvian cocaine refinement camp] This is where it happens. We got 15 of these farms in this valley alone. But that's not the special part. Let me show you where the magic happens. Come on. First, we take the leaves. You grind them into a paste. You take that paste and you strain it with a little bit of diesel. You're left with this shit. This dirty liquid. But then you add a bit of this. Magic ammonium. All you gotta do now is cook that down and you're left with a batch of super premium cоcɑіnе.
Susan "Susie" Glass: This is all very interesting, Hector, but we're here to speak to Vargas about moving powder. Not a chemistry lesson.
Hector Rodriguez: You're right, my bad, cabrón. [gestures] There you go. Let's go.
Carlos Vargas: Joe Green. Great to finally meet you at last. And this must be Miss Glass. Susie. This is my associate, Arturo. Welcome. I feel it's been a long time coming in your case, Joey. Working for us down in Miami, is that right? Oh, yeah. Five years. Joe is the best. Reliable, dependable. Cool under pressure. ...take a bullet for this man. Oh, wow. That's, uh... That's good to know.
Hector Rodriguez: He's proved he can be trusted. Now he's got support from the UK, he's ready to take on a regular commitment.
Carlos Vargas: What kind of commitment were you thinking of?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Two hundred kilos a month.
Carlos Vargas: Hoo! Whoaǃ That's a big responsibilityǃ
Joseph "Joe" Green: That's why I didn't come here on my own.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Apart from providing the substantial amount of cash needed to get things started, I've also got access to a pre-existing network.
Carlos Vargas: I've heard nothing but good things about your operation, Miss Glass. But cоcɑіnе is a different kind of mistress to Mary Jane.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I appreciate the disparities between the two products, but the logistics in terms of transportation and distribution are comparable.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Which means we can pay you 4,000 a key. I'm 100% confident that we can deliver this, Mr. Vargas. I've looked at it from every angle, and it is watertight. With Susie's infrastructure, her experience, her talent, her sheer fսcking professionalism, coupled with my knowledge of the game, there is no danger here. There is only a 24-carat opportunity.
Carlos Vargas: I'll take a little time, perhaps a week or two, to think over your proposal, and we'll be in touch.
Joseph "Joe" Green: You were immense today. Totally fearless. My heart was pounding so much I could barely think. But you, you just... You just stared him straight in the eye.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Well, at the end of the day, Vargas is a businessman like anyone else. As long as he thinks we can be relied upon to make him money, there's nothing to be scared of.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Sure you wanna do this, Susie? If your dad found out, he'd kill us both. Well, maybe not you.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Oh, rest assured, Joseph. We'd both be in trouble.
Joseph "Joe" Green: How's the Duke doing? Dunno. Recovering, I hear. You haven't spoken to him?
Susan "Susie" Glass: I've tried calling. He won't answer. But what I hear is he has two broken legs, a broken arm, severe bruising, collapsed lung, and a half dozen broken fingers. All in all, he's had it pretty rough.
Joseph "Joe" Green: That's not why you're doing this, is it? To get back at your dad?
Susan "Susie" Glass: No, Jojo. I'm doing this because of your irresistible dimples, naughty sense of humor, and gigantic personality.
Joseph "Joe" Green: That's very flattering, but it's still not an answer. [taking her hand]
Susan "Susie" Glass: What you doing?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Come on.
Susan "Susie" Glass: No. I don't dance. You know that.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I'm not taking no for an answer, Susie Glass.
Joseph "Joe" Green: We have got a visitor, flown in all the way from South America.
Hector Rodriguez: [from walkway bridge in loft] Buenos días, Susanita.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hector, you're a long way from home.
Hector Rodriguez: I wanted to tell you the good news in person. Mr. Vargas says yes.
Susan "Susie" Glass: So we're on?
Joseph "Joe" Green: You fսcking bet we're on.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [voiceover of montage] My father regaled me with stories about the perils of the chop game from an early age. For him, the gap between Class A and Class B drսg was a vast chasm that could never be crossed. His rationale was that cоcɑіnе dealers were like wild animals, capable of anything, and always hurtling towards their own inevitable destruction. However, that doesn't mean the distribution infrastructure he's built in the weed game over the last 20 years isn't perfectly suited to cоcɑіnе. An infrastructure we can take advantage of with the help of some old friends. [in a flashback scene] Chucky, Joe, meet JP and family.
JP Ward: How are we, lads? Beautiful place. Ready?
Joe and JP: [toasting drinks] Slainte!
Susan "Susie" Glass: [voiceover of montage] Providing everyone involved acts with due discretion. The Duke's attempts to create a lucrative new revenue stream were always gonna come to my father's attention, meaning they were always dependent on his consent. A gift that he was ultimately unwilling to give. Whereas we're just piggybacking on his preexisting operation. So long as my father never finds out, he never needs to worry.
Chucky Kubra: [in a flashback scene] This is not how you clean cash, Suze. You go slowly. There's too much money coming through.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Uh, I think it's a problem we can deal with. Right, Suze?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Yeah. We'll get on to it straight away. [voiceover of montage] The truth is that what my father was presenting as wisdom was, in fact, masking a lack of ambition that, over time, turned him into an evergreen tree, under which nothing else could grow. As soon as you free yourself from that cautious and inward-looking mindset, the possibilities are limitless, and the only real problem you're faced with is what to do with all that money.
Stanley Johnston: [leading Eddie through Guildford Cathedral ] It used to take hundreds of years and thousands of men to construct a cathedral, with the confidence that God was listening. This 1960s monstrosity took two years and 100 men. The reason for this is the constriction that comes with the abandonment of certainty. I want to ask you a question. Alongside the inevitable feelings of despondency and regret you must have been wrestling with, did you, at any stage, experience any sense of liberation?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, Mr. Johnston. None whatsoever.
Stanley Johnston: It's not until you leave yourself behind that you can experience who you really are.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Trouble is that in my case, the process that stripped me of my privileges has left me in a rather precarious position that needs swift resolution, which is why I'd like to offer my estate as collateral for a loan of 100 million sterling.
Stanley Johnston: The very number I offered you the first day we met. ( Stanley chuckles ) Must be fate.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: If I can't repay the loan within a year, plus 15% interest, the estate and the grounds are yours.
Stanley Johnston: What do you plan to do with this money, should I agree?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Repay my debts and recapitalize.
Stanley Johnston: Are you familiar with the London Stone, Your Grace?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes, it's a... It's a landmark on Cannon Street.
Stanley Johnston: It's much more than just a landmark, but the legend has it that Brutus brought it to the British Isles, the supposed founder of Britain, back in 1115 B.C.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: So long as the Stone of Brutus is safe...
Stanley Johnston: So long London will flourish. Hm. Its history, and yours, predates the Roman Empire. The legend states it arrived with the Trojans and landed in the British Isles 1,200 years before the birth of Christ. They saw the potential in this island they named Albion, so they left behind the stone, like a mystical beacon that would pulse for a millennia.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, that's a charming story.
Stanley Johnston: I believe that you are the direct descendant of King Priam, the last king of Troy. That your aristocratic lineage goes back much further than you ever imagined, to the ancient Greeks.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You may be slightly overstating my lineage. It's very kind of you. But I'm not here for a history lesson. I'm here for a number.
Stanley Johnston: I will grant you your loan, Lord Horniman, Duke of Halstead. I will have Stevens draw up the contract at once. Not because I wish to acquire your country seat, but more because I'd like to see you realize your full potential.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [answers phone] Morning, Chucky. What can I do for you?
Chucky Kubra: You all right, Susan? Quick one. Could I request you and that handsome bastard get here as a matter of urgency?
Susan "Susie" Glass: That could be tricky. We're chasing our tails a little today. Can't it wait?
Chucky Kubra: No, it can't wait, no. Um, I need you here now, please.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'll see if I can bend my schedule.
Chucky Kubra: Get it bent. I'll see you in half an hour. Thank you.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Stick to the plan, yeah? Look, um... I'll, uh... I'll call you back. [sees Joe at door of loft] Hey, I was gonna let you lie in.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Yeah, well, Chucky had other ideas. He's got his knickers in a twist about something. I don't think it's the quality of the cooking, but you never know. He didn't want to go into details. I might have to leave this one to you. I've got a couple of things to sort out in town before I see JP. Everything all right?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Yeah. Yeah. Everything is absolutely fine. Give me a call when you're done with Chucky.
Chucky Kubra: Where's Joe?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Joe's busy. Is everything all right?
Chucky Kubra: No, not really. Got a bit of a sticky situation still. [leads Susie into restaurant, speaks Urdu] That's why they call it a chef's knife, my friendǃ
Arturo: [sitting at table] Buenos días, Miss Glass.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [approaches] Good morning, Arturo. Didn't know you'd be joining us. Should have let me know you were in town.
Moody: [chuckles] Why would I do that?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Well, that's what people do when they wanna have a business meeting. They arrange it. [to Moody with hand impaled to table] Doing all right there, Moody?
Moody: Good, Miss Susie. Totally good.
Chucky Kubra: No, Moody's all right. His nan was in the Taliban. She's hard as fսck, so... Yeah.
Moody: Yep.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Why don't we sit down and we can discuss whatever your problem is like professionals, hm? :Arturo: You want to know what my problem is? Bruno.
Bruno: Hm. Our product is unique. Easily identifiable both by its quality and the chemical markers we use to track it down. [places a cocaine brick on table]
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hm. Lovely.
Bruno: So, when we heard there was a supply chain opening here... we came to investigate. [slides phone to Susie] And here we are.
Susan "Susie" Glass: [sees JP Ward with all his men slain on phone] They work for me.
Bruno: They were selling our product.
Susan "Susie" Glass: No. It was your product. And then we paid a considerable amount of money for it and it became our product.
Bruno: [scoffs] That never happened.
Arturo: Mr. Vargas, he said no.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Hector came to tell us in person. We've paid for 400 kilos.
Arturo: When was the last time you saw him?
Susan "Susie" Glass: When we paid for the first consignment. Look, if you have a problem, I suggest you talk to Hector about it.
Arturo: Let me worry about Hector. Where is Joe?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Joe's busy.
Arturo: Call him.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Why don't we give Mr. Vargas a ring? I'm sure he can clear this up.
Arturo: Mr. Vargas is aware of the situation. [holds up gun] You call Joe. And tell him to come here right now.
Chucky Kubra: Oh, just call the fսckеr, innit?
Joseph "Joe" Green: [answers phone] All right, babe?
Susan "Susie" Glass: You all right, babe? Um, Chucky and I could do with the benefit of your wisdom. Mind bringing your arse here quickly?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Ooh, I dunno. It's gonna be a bit tight. Why, what's up?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Can't really talk about it on the phone. But it's not a big deal. Just a... a quick chat.
Joseph "Joe" Green: What do you mean a quick chat?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Just, come on, yeah?
Joseph "Joe" Green: All right, Suze, yeah. I'll, um... I'll be over in an hour.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Great.
Marco Moretti: It's good to see you. [chuckles] You look well. Ah... [chuckles] Considering.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yes, well, thank you. And, uh... I'm sorry I let you down.
Marco Moretti: This is the nature of speculation, you know. Sometimes you achieve your ambitions. Sometimes... you fall short.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Look, I understand you can't write off 60 million as pure speculation.
Marco Moretti: Hm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: But instead of returning the money, what if we went one better?
Marco Moretti: Mm-hmm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: We take the 60 million, plus another 40 from me, and we invest it. Fifty farms across the continent within three years. It's not about retribution. It's about levelling the playing field.
Marco Moretti: You made a big play, Eddie. And you lost. People talk. Mud sticks, you know. You know what you need to do now? [in Italian] Retreat... Rebuild... Evolve.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: And that is exactly what I intend to do, Marco.
Marco Moretti: Yes, but you need to earn people's trust.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: What... What is this? Is this a brush-off?
Marco Moretti: No, no, no, no. It's just right now, I think you are not ready.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, I am ready. No. I am. Before, I was encumbered. Now I am free from my previous associations. They were the ones holding me back.
Marco Moretti: [chuckles] Yes, you may be free, but you are alone. Eddie, you are alone. You have no roots in the world you intend to operate in. You understand? Ah. Hm?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Fine. Money will be in your account by the end of play.
Marco Moretti: [in Italian] Obviously. [leaves]
Susan "Susie" Glass: [Joe walks past] See? There he is. Nothing to worry about.
Chucky Kubra: Uh, Suze, I don't know about you, but, uh, I don't fancy dying today.
Susan "Susie" Glass: No one's gonna die, Chucky. Everything's fine. This is just some kind of scam or a massive fuck-off.
Chucky Kubra: Suze, in both those scenarios, we could end up fսcking dead.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It'll be fine.
Chucky Kubra: What are you so calm for, you bastard?
Arturo: Any idea what's going on here, Suze?
Susan "Susie" Glass: There seems to have been some kind of miscommunication with our mate Hector. Turns out the gear was never ours to sell.
Joseph "Joe" Green: No. Nah, that's crazy. Hector wouldn't do that.
Arturo: Yoǃ Sit down. And you. I'll tell you what I'll do.
Chucky Kubra: I do a banging karak chai. You fancy a tea? I'll do you a tea. Yeah? Tea?
Arturo: No chai. And you're not going anywhere, mate. [calls to subordinate] Angel. [to Joe] I've got a couple of questions for you, Joe. And I hope you've got the answers I need so we can move forward.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Yeah, so do I.
Arturo: You bought all this cоcɑіnе off Hector, right?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Uh-huh.
Arturo: Where is the rest?
Joseph "Joe" Green: We... We sold it.
Arturo: You make a lot of money?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Yeah, yeah, we did okay.
Arturo: Where is the money now?
Joseph "Joe" Green: That's our money, Arturo.
Arturo: The cоcɑіnе wasn't yours. So the money does not belong to you. You need to tell me where is the fսcking money. Otherwise, it's gonna be a problem. For you. For your compañeros.
Joseph "Joe" Green: [Arturo grabs Susie's hand with a raised screwdriver] Whoa, whoa, whoa! Calm the fսck down! What the fսck? Listen, listen, okay? The money, yeah? The money is at my flat. Okay? But I can give you something you want much more than money. Yeah? Hector. The bloke that stole the coke off you in the first place.
Arturo: Where is he?
Joseph "Joe" Green: I spoke to him this morning! Yeah? He's on the way to my flat right now. I suggest, okay... I suggest that... that me and you, we meet him there, so we can... so we can just straighten all of this out, yeah? [exhales]
Susan "Susie" Glass: Okay. Play nicely.
Arturo: [in Spanish to Bruno with a raised gun] These pricksǃ They have no idea what they've gotten themselves into. [in English] You stay here. She's going to the flat. Angel. Bruno. You bring Hector back. You know where he lives, right?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Yeah, I know where he lives.
Arturo: [in Spanish] If Hector isn't there. Then kill her.
Garbielle: [posing as delivery worker holding up clipboard] Sorry, is it all right if I get one of you boys to sign this? Only I'm in a bit of a rush today.
Jack Glass: Oi, mate, where do you want these bad boys? [opens fire on Vargas thugs]
Chucky Kubra: [Susie appears in restaurant dining floor and shoots Arturo dead] What the fսck's going on in here, Susie?
Susan "Susie" Glass: That's the £12 million question, innit?
Jack Glass: Suze, you're gonna have to tell me what's going on.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I will. When I know. Right now, I need you to put those bodies somewhere no one will ever find them. And you can't talk to Dad about any of it.
Jack Glass: Right, look, are you on top of this or not?
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'm on top of it.
Joseph "Joe" Green: This is the way I see it, yeah? Either Arturo was making some kind of land grab, taking us and Hector out so that he can control the UK, or Hector has been lying to us from the beginning.
Susan "Susie" Glass: We need to speak to Hector.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I haven't spoken to him in days.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You said you tried to call him this morning.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I made that up, trying to split their numbers so we could take them out.
Susan "Susie" Glass: We need to speak to Vargas. Explain the situation.
Joseph "Joe" Green: You really think he's gonna listen after what we just did? Susie, we need to disappear until we figure things out. Vargas is gonna come after us. It's what these people do. It's what these people are like. Look, uh... [gets close to her] I'm not gonna let anything happen to ya. Susie, I love ya. And we're in this together, yeah? This is what we're gonna do. We're gonna grab the money, get the fսck out of here. We can go anywhere. Tenerife, Thailand, fսcking Timbuktu.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Okay. Um... I can sort a plane from the Duke's airfield.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Good. Yeah. I'll get the cash from the flat. You grab the diamonds. Pack whatever you can into a small suitcase. Pack lightly.
Susan "Susie" Glass: How light? ( chuckles softly )
Joseph "Joe" Green: This might not be forever, but it might be. [kisses her]
Joseph "Joe" Green: [Susan appears at airfield] Hey. Everything all right?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Yeah. Jet's fueled, bag's packed, out of office on.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Well done, babe.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Did you manage to get hold of Hector?
Joseph "Joe" Green: No. I left him a bunch of messages, but he hasn't called me back.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Where the fսck is he?
Joseph "Joe" Green: I don't know. Maybe he's dead. Maybe Vargas has got to him. [flashback scene of Susie discovering Hector's murdered body at her loft] It doesn't matter, Susie. All that matters is that we get on that plane together tonight.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Okay. I'll see you at the airfield.
Joseph "Joe" Green: [scoffs] Where's your bag, Susie?
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'm not getting on the plane, Joe.
Joseph "Joe" Green: [scoffs] What do you mean?
Susan "Susie" Glass: You're flying solo. And it's not taking you to Timbuktu. It's taking you to Madrid, where a contingent of Mr. Vargas's associates are gonna meet you and escort you on to Lima, Peru.
Joseph "Joe" Green: And, uh, why would I do that?
Susan "Susie" Glass: Because you don't have a choice. You know, I can respect someone who makes mistakes. Bad decisions, doesn't always do the right thing. But what I can't respect is a liar. Because from that point on, I question everything that comes out of their mouth.
Joseph "Joe" Green: And how did I lie?
Susan "Susie" Glass: You've been lying from the very beginning. Did you know I was gonna be there? At the auction? Were you just lying in wait, ready to reel me in?
Joseph "Joe" Green: No, Susie, I swear to God. That was a coincidence.
Susan "Susie" Glass: And the bullshit keeps on coming.
Hector: Mr. Vargas says yes.
Susan "Susie" Glass: We were never on.
Arturo: He said no.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Vargas turned us down. So you and Hector went around him.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Hector? Hector is against us.
Susan "Susie" Glass: There's another lie. You said he wasn't returning your calls. But he came looking for you. Like this morning.
Joseph "Joe" Green: [in flashback] Got a couple of things to do in town before I see JP.
Susan "Susie" Glass: When you said you couldn't come to Chucky's, which was technically true, but then when Hector vanished off the face of the earth, I thought it warranted further investigation. I'm guessing he got wind of the fact that Vargas was onto you both. [scene of Joe killing Hector] So you killed Hector to cover your tracks.
Joseph "Joe" Green: Look, Susie, okay-- Susie. Everything I did was for us.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I wish I could believe that, Joe. I really do. But like I said, you're a liar.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I wasn't lying when I told you that I loved you.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's not gonna curry much favor in Peru, is it?
Joseph "Joe" Green: Susie, you don't have to do this. We can still be together, you and me.
Susan "Susie" Glass: It's been emotional, Joe.
Joseph "Joe" Green: I can walk for myself, all right?
Carlos Vargas: [answers phone] Miss Glass.
Susan "Susie" Glass: He's on his way.
Carlos Vargas: I've been looking to fix the leak for quite some time. And now that it's done, you've proved your loyalty, perhaps, uh, we sit down together and talk about future opportunities.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Let's get a date in the diary.
Carlos Vargas: Okay. [scene of Joe's plane taking off]
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: [appears at airfield] I hope I'm not interrupting.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Not at all. This is a pleasant surprise.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Ah, likewise.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Going anywhere nice?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I'm taking an impromptu trip. You know me, I'm a lady of leisure these days.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You're looking good, all things considered.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Thank you.
Susan "Susie" Glass: I'm sorry about the fallout with you and my dad. I thought a slap on the wrist would have sufficed, but you know what he's like when he's in a tizzy.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Doesn't matter now. It's in the past. But I feel like I have a clearer idea of what I want these days.
Susan "Susie" Glass: What's that?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Everything.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Punchy. You've certainly been able to pull some silver linings out of what most people would've considered pretty murky waters.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: You have to leave yourself behind to realize the true value of yourself. Once you lose everything, you realize the things that you had were ephemeral and transitory. They were never really yours in the first place.
Susan "Susie" Glass: You're starting to scare me, Eddie.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: That's not scary. I'm worried about you, Susan.
Susan "Susie" Glass: Worried about me, how? That I'm emotionally unhinged? Overly materialistic? Lacking in karmic balance?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Sad. That was the word I was gonna use. Sad. Don't worry about me, Eddie. I'll be just fine. Go on. You'll miss your flight. Yeah. Keep in touch.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: This is unexpected. To what do I owe the pleasure?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I thought we could have a chat.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: You sound serious. Am I in trouble?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: No, you're not. I might be. [to server] Uh, Antonio. Two drinks? [to Bella] I wanted to tell you a... a story, Bella. Bear with me, 'cause there's a small chance there might be a happy ending. There was once a man who made a mistake. And the cost of that miscalculation was a punishment. He awoke to find himself in a shallow grave, surrounded by the black abyss of nothingness. The pain was crushing. His legs were broken, and his body was beaten, and any movement invited a mplification of the agony that he was already drowning in. Thank you, Antonio. The only noise he could hear was a voice telling him his time was up. The game was over. The bell had rung. And as he closed his eyes, he accepted his fate. A spark of light appeared, flickering on the periphery of his consciousness. And that spark had an intention. It emanated a single message. "Follow me." And so he did. And after two nights, three miles of quagmire, thorn wood, and bush, he found himself on a suburban A-road on the outskirts of Basingstoke, and... and he was saved.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: Why did you stop?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: To allow you to finish the story.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: How am I supposed to know how the story finishes?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: 'Cause you were there, Bella. You were on the journey. Every step of the way. I owe you my life. [takes out handkerchief] And, um, now... [places handkerchief on table] you owe me an answer.
Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parma: [unfolds handkerchief to reveal a finger band ring, exhales] The answer is yes.
"The Bells of San Domenico" [2.06]
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: [sees at door] Hello, Edward.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Freddy. [walks over and hugs] Good to see you.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Good to see you too. [exhales] You look good. It's been a long old time.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Yeah. I, uh, hear you wanted a little space.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Absolutely, yes. Good old... Good old dollop of space. Yeah. [they sit] So... you mentioned on the phone you had some news.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I'm, uh... I'm getting married, Freddy.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Gosh. [chuckles] Wow. Congratulations.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Thank you. Wonderful news. Yeah.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Who's the lucky gal?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Bella. She's Italian.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Italian?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: So she's not posh?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Oh, no, she's a countess, as it happens.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Oh, Edward. Oh, good for you. Thank God.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Listen, uh, the reason I'm here is, uh... Well, I wanted to... I wanted to ask you to be my best man.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Wow. [bursts laughs and Eddie joins laughing] Good grief. That's a biggie, isn't it? Best man. I was a best man once. University. Tim Montgomery. I... I'd love to. I mean, I... I'd be honored.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Good.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: I just... I don't think I'm ready. I'm sorry, old fruit.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Right. Well... Mm. I understand, of course.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Where's the wedding?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Uh, Lake Maggiore.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Ooh, lovely. Honeymoon?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: A couple of lakes to the north. Bella's insistent on flying us there by seaplane.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: A flying Italian countess.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: [chuckles] Well, it all sounds perfect.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Mm.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: And listen, don't worry about us. We shall be reconciled, you and I. It's just gonna take a little bit of time. Eddie, you're something of a theologian, aren't you? Are you familiar with the story of Esau and Jacob?
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Uh... Ye-... Yes, I am.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: See, I think we have quite a lot in common with those two brothers. I'm like Esau, the wise, noble, trusting older brother who toiled out in the fields. He toiled and toiled day after day. Whereas you, you're like the subtle, crafty younger brother, Jacob, who used subterfuge to trick the older Esau into handing over his inheritance in exchange for a mere mess of potage, a bowl of soup.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Do you really wanna have this conversation?
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: And if you remember, Jacob disguised himself as Esau in order to hoodwink the father into handing over his birthright.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: I didn't trick anyone, Freddy.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Mm.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Dad changed the will because of you, remember? When someone's drunk behind the wheel, you take control of that wheel by any means necessary. Look, I'll let you consider whatever it is you need to consider, and then in time... Bella and I will come and visit you after the honeymoon. I'd like that very much. And remember this. Esau did forgive Jacob in the end, Edward, but only after he battled with the Angel of the Lord.
Edward "Eddie" Horniman: Well, I'm glad a full reconciliation is on the table.
Frederick "Freddy" Horniman: Oh, very much so. Very much so. And I'll be here waiting for you. When you're ready. [watches Eddie leave] I tried. I tried, but I couldn't make him see.
John "The Gospel" Dixon: "But you, O Lord, do not be far from me, O my strength. Hasten to help me." "Deliver me from the sword. My precious life, from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth... and from the horns of the wild oxen... for you have answered me."
