Kelvin Carter was a South African photojournalist and member of the Bang-Bang Club, the group of photographers who documented political violence in South Africa during the final years of apartheid.
He worked for South African newspapers before becoming a freelance photographer in 1993. His photographs documented some of the most violent periods of South Africa's transition, and he later travelled to Sudan, where he photographed the famine.
His photograph of a starving child near a vulture was published by The New York Times and won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. The Pulitzer archive confirms that the prize was awarded to Carter for that photograph.
Carter died in Johannesburg on 27 July 1994, aged 33.
