Quotes
I'm afraid that because I'm a cardinal people will think of me as a success. I'm immensely afraid of that, since I'm here to bear witness instead. The Lord has given me a great grace, but if I'm a bishop it is not that I've succeeded more than others. I have more responsibility, that's for sure. Even if, as things are, because of the increasing importance of the mass media, there's no point in being a cardinal if you only come out with banalities.
What makes the Church ever younger (2004) 30 Days
Since the time of Plato, music has been the highest expression of spirituality. But if you leave the "Rigoletto" you have no message for the future, the abandonment of many young people from classical music is a fact. And they are ready to receive values, they just need witnesses, we saw it very clearly with the million young people gathered in Paris for the Pope, an event that took the French themselves by surprise. [...] Modern music can make you think. Rock can have its own spirituality. Elton John said something with a song at Diana's funeral...

Democracy is entering into crisis, because it, I mean modern quantitative democracy, was conceived assuming that there were stable, fixed values, shared by all.
The fact is that thought is sick, that the dominant culture no longer has any esteem, because thought is made by its nature to feed on reality, and therefore to offer men a truth that it discovers in things. But this is today and intolerable, because in the meantime a new fundamental value has emerged: freedom. Things, nature is worth nothing anymore; second nature, the one he creates with his hands, is worth it.
Poor are we, if we had hope in Christ, but without being sure that it is the Truth, if we had faith and hope in Christ only for this world: we would be the most miserable of men, as St. Paul says.
If thought is not disciplined we can no longer do anything and we will only find ourselves faced with the residues of 1968, the residues of the subjectivist mentality that confuses sincerity, spontaneity with goodness and with value, which takes the celebration itself as a reason, as a value, then does not care if the celebration destroys man.
