The Bauhaus had this almost touching belief that if you designed a better house, a better chair, a better city, you could create a better life. Today, design is everywhere, but we've lost some of that faith. Perhaps because we've realised that better design isn't enough. And yet that's precisely what still makes it interesting.
Him is 25 years old now. The work has stayed the same, but the world around it has changed considerably. And I don't think this is just a German issue. In Italy, France and pretty much everywhere in Europe, ideas and language that were on the fringes just a few years ago have moved much closer to the mainstream. Perhaps the most important thing isn't even who wins an election, but what, in the meantime, becomes normal to say, think and accept. We have to be careful about making easy comparisons, but certain changes only become visible once they've already happened. If Him seems more contemporary today than it did 25 years ago, I'm not sure whether that's good news for the work or bad news for us”.
I've never considered myself either woke or anti-woke. I always have a problem when a word becomes a team you have to belong to. Many of the issues raised by the woke movement were important and necessary. The problem begins when a heightened awareness of these issues turns into a system of mutual surveillance, and the fear of using the wrong word becomes more important than the ability to think.
