The Meitei Hui (ꯃꯩꯇꯩ ꯍꯨꯏ), also referred to as Meitei Huei, is an indigenous dog breed originating from Manipur, India. Nurtured over generations by the Meitei people, the breed has long remained overlooked, particularly when compared to widely recognized non-native dog breeds. Archaeological and cultural accounts suggest that the Meitei Hui emerged in the Imphal Valley nearly 10,000 years ago, through the early domestication of local wild wolves by Meitei communities. Although it historically lived in close association with local populations and was often perceived as inferior, recent studies, observations, and public exhibitions have begun to reshape this view and highlight the breed’s distinct qualities. ‘Hui’ means dog in the Meitei language (alias Manipuri language).
