Khaleel-Ur-Rehman Azmi (9 August 1927 – 1 June 1978), also known as Khalil al-Rehman Azmi, was an Urdu poet and literary critic who was born in the village Seedhan Sultanpur in the district of Azamgarh. He conducted highly valuable research and critical work on the evolution of Urdu poetry, particularly the Ghazal, under the influence of the Progressive Writers' Movement. His foundational work, Urdu Mein Taraqqi Pasand Adabi Tahreek, is widely regarded as the most authentic documentary text on the subject. Quotes The essence of the Ghazal is formed by the truth of human emotions; no movement can bring an end to the Ghazal as long as heartbeat and sentiment remain alive in the human heart. Fikr-o-Fan (Thought and Art), Educational Publishing House, Delhi, 1990, p. 34 The Progressive Movement certainly gave a new life and popular consciousness to Urdu literature, but where literature turned into mere sloganeering, its creative and aesthetic values became weak. Urdu Mein Taraqqi Pasand Adabi Tahreek (The Progressive Literary Movement in Urdu), Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (Hind), New Delhi, 1985, p. 18 Poetry is not merely a sorcery of words; rather, it is a beautiful linguistic expression of the poet's internal anguish, the truths of his era, and human relationships. Mazameen-e-Khalil (Essays of Khalil), Maktaba Jamia Limited, New Delhi, 1974, p. 52 No literary movement descends from the sky; rather, it is a natural prose response to the political crises, economic shifts, and social unrest of its era. Urdu Mein Taraqqi Pasand Adabi Tahreek, Aligarh Muslim University, p. 36 The higher and more unbiased the standard of criticism is, the more robust and dignified the prose capital of literature will be. The job of a critic is not to block the path of the creator, but to widen their intellectual horizon. Fikr-o-Dastan (Thought and Story), p. 114 The academic environment of universities remains alive only as long as there is freedom to critique old ideologies from new perspectives and to tolerate academic disagreements with an open mind. Maqalat-e-Azmi (Collected Essays of Azmi), p. 82 True literature is always the guardian of human values and freedom of thought. A piece of writing that makes a human oblivious to the problems of his era might be temporary entertainment, but it is not enduring literature.
