Sheena Duncan was a South African human rights activist and a prominent leader of the Black Sash. She served as national president of the organisation from 1975 to 1985 and continued to work in its advice offices. She was a leading opponent of apartheid, advocating non-racialism, human rights, civil liberties and non-violent resistance. She was also a member of the South African Council of Churches and was involved in the Five Freedoms Forum. She died in 2010. Quotes “I am a staunch pacifist, whose avowed aim is to find non-violent ways in which power can be transferred to the powerless, not out of any desire for the defeat or subjugation of the currently powerful, but in the true longing for a society in which equal distribution of powers would lead to peace and justice preserved in that creative tension which exists between conflicting interests of equal strengths.” Encyclopedia.com “I believe that there is one small hope left in South Africa and that lies in those political movements and black communities who have withdrawn and are withdrawing their cooperation from the apartheid state.” South African History Online “Civil disobedience must not be entered into when the law can offer redress. It is a last resort.” South African History Online “The pass laws must go. No more reference books, no more stamps in your passbook. It's the first real sign that apartheid is being dismantled.” The Washington Post “Although there's a long way to go, this really is a cause for hope for South Africa's future.” The Washington Post “White is a colour of the skin... that has nothing to do with the colour of your soul.” South African History Archive External links Category:1932 births Category:2010 deaths Category:Activists from South Africa Category:Human rights activists Category:Anti-apartheid activists Category:Women activists Category:Black Sash
