[Oscar Luigi Scalfaro] A Father of the Fatherland who has accompanied Italian democracy from its rebirth to today, always with that intelligence, that authority, that moral and intellectual cleanliness that he has maintained in all the positions he has held throughout his long political career. We are all indebted to him for his teachings, his civil battles, his service to the State and to the Italians. [...] I will always treasure the honor of the friendship that my father, who always remained proudly "Scalfarian," first honored, and then me, giving me unforgettable conversations and valuable advice.

Palermo is in itself a capital in the heart of the Mediterranean, which has managed to regain its centrality thanks to culture, tourism, and the redevelopment of urban spaces. A quality cultural offering, such as that of Manifesta 12, combined with the initiatives for Palermo Italian Capital of Culture 2018 and the European Year of Heritage, will make this metropolis a vital and attractive center in the eyes of the world. And this will happen in the name of contemporary culture and art, which with Manifesta has chosen a theme fully consistent with the original character of Palermo, namely the comparison and dialogue between diversities to cultivate coexistence.

[Regarding the approval of the reform of the European Stability Mechanism] The ESM is currently being challenged by the country's credibility, the spread, and the markets. You can't play with fire.

Incipit of La follia improvvisa di Ignazio Rando
He suddenly stood up, crawling the legs of the metal chair against the Palladian floor. The shrill noise cut the perpetual silence of the Royal Mortgage Conservatory. All the people who crowded the office during rush hour looked up and saw him stand first on the chair, then on his desk, and finally on the long counter where they were leafing through heavy pages of dusty, large volumes. He buttoned his jacket, looked down at a lady with her mouth wide open, smiled at her as if to apologize, and walked toward the exit, treading without malice on the sheets of stamped paper, mortgages, foreclosures, and yellowed deeds that filled the floor. When he reached the back he barely bowed, and with a lightness that those present judged extraordinary for his age, he jumped off the counter, readjusted his jacket and left the office where he had spent every morning, for thirty-seven years, five months and four days. In the great hall they all stood motionless watching the door slowly close, held back by the metal arm.
