Quotes
[…] the calycanthus flower, which few know, is truly appreciated only when you discover it, you know it, beyond appearances, and I, in the calycanthus, recognize a little of myself, of my way of life. It is a brave and pioneering flower, and is the first to open in January, very often on branches still covered in ice, when the other flowers are but a promise asleep inside small closed buds. The calycanthus flower is not striking for its shape or color, but it gives off such a particular, intense and enveloping scent that it cannot be forgotten, it leaves its mark. And I've always tried to live my life exactly like this, even at the cost of breaking my nose to be in front, on the front lines – but without ambitions– with a great desire to do, to reach people's hearts for who I really was, and with the hope of being able to leave my little mark.

I've been a vegetarian for twenty-one years, a vegan for nine. I don't think there is any extremism, extreme is someone who bothers others. I am a more serene, less aggressive person and I take fewer colds.

Over time, I may have also forgotten the names of my playmates, but not the voice of nature. That, if anything, grew inside until it became a purpose of my existence.

One day, again because of those voices from inside and certainly not out of fashion, I threw the fish I had caught back into the water. I had become vegan. I also decided to give up honey, which I was also very fond of.

Happiness, perhaps, is not of this world but serenity is. Well I am serene on the inside and physically fulfilled. All without effort and with great love for myself and, therefore, for others too.

I was born ignorant, like everyone else, after all the great Totò said: "No one is born learned". But to grow, to understand and improve myself, to satisfy my constant curiosity, I studied and asked myself a thousand questions and a thousand goals. And you also improve yourself by going through mistakes: so, like many others, I ate meat, fish, eggs and cheeses "so that you grow strong" they told me... Then, little by little, I began to inform myself and above all to follow my instincts. There was something that didn't add up to me, and the change happened spontaneously, gradually, but convinced and definitive. Twenty years ago I stopped consuming meat and all its derivatives and in 2009 I went totally vegan. (p. 19)
Go to the supermarket with glasses to carefully read the labels. Vegan or non-vegan, the important thing is to safeguard our health. The vegan is made easier in this: when he buys tomatoes, carrots, fennel, broccoli or beans, his only concern is finding traceability, that is, understanding where the products come from and looking, as far as possible, for seasonal and locally sourced fruits and vegetables. (p. 23)
It is our duty to inform ourselves, and I emphasize duty and not right, because each of us must feel responsible for what happens around us. (pp. 23-24)
I was bathed in the light of an extraordinary sunset and, after two almost imperceptible touches, I shod a beautiful brown trout, which had come out from under a rock to attack my deception, my colorful bait. I slowly dragged her to shore and, after wetting my hand, gently picked her up from the water... She was beautiful and the red dots of her delicate livery shone in the rays of that last sun. But I didn't do what I usually did, which was stun her with my knuckle and stick her in the wicker basket I carried over my shoulder, no: I slamai her, bent down and slowly put her back in the water... [...] I came home that it was already dark, and when I told my wife and children that I would no longer fish, I saw them smile in disbelief... [...] I also informed them of my decision to go vegan: not only fish but also eggs, dairy products, and anything that could cause suffering to any being would disappear from my diet. (pp. 27-28)
